PSALM 104: 1-9, 24, 35c

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honour and majesty, 2 wrapped in light as with a garment. You stretch out the heavens like a tent, 3 you set the beams of your chambers on the waters, you make the clouds your chariot, you ride on the wings of the wind, 4 you make the winds your messengers, fire and flame your ministers. 5 You set the earth on its foundations, so that it shall never be shaken. 6 You cover it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7 At your rebuke they flee; at the sound of your thunder they take up flight. 8 They rose up the mountains, ran down to the valleys to the place that you appointed for them. 9 You set a boundary that they may not pass, so that they might not again cover the earth. 24 O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 35 Praise the Lord. (NRSV translation).

Reflections

The psalmist praises God for who God is and for the creation of the world. The psalmist from long ago is working out of a different cosmology to us of today, evident in the hierarchical cosmology. Yet, the encouragement for us to celebrate God’s presence in all creation, and praise God for creation, is a real today as three millennia ago. Everything has a place in the world, everything has a value

The Parramatta Leagues Club has been a long-term supporter of Parramatta Mission. Last week a community partners dinner was held in the new Pablo’s Cantina on level 3, as an acknowledgement and a thank you to the groups for their community work.

Rev Bu Chi Ai, sitting on my right, is the UC minister at Cabramatta. Ai has conducted a tremendous ministry over 18 years, taking the congregation from a small, culturally divided group, to a strong, cohesive vibrant position today. He also has obtained many grants to repair and renovate the church building and hall. Small groups have commenced. Ai has instituted English classes, which included the late Freda Whitlam as a teacher, and to which the local community leaders, police and politicians are invited to the graduations. Last Saturday, eight of us celebrated with Ai the thirtieth anniversary of his release from 10 years in prison in Vietnam because he is a Christian minister. His story is remarkable. He developed such reputation in prison he was given access to all areas to pastor the prison inmates. On his release, while in a refugee camp, he met then then immigration minister, Jerry Hand, who took a personal interest, and pathed the way of Ai to come to Australia. It was a privilege to celebrate with him.

Lost bird found is a project of PM in raising awareness about mental health. Staff make the birds and the note and leave them in public places, trees, parks, shopping centres, for people to find. As you can see by the crumpled note on this one, it has a history. This one was made by our staff in our Taree office. You can join in. Contact reception and Coral and Tracey will connect you with PM staff.

Blessings, Keith Hamilton
