Our team Dr. Karin Bodewits comes from the Netherlands where she studied Biology, finished a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Edinburgh, and moved to Munich thereafter. Here, she founded the company ScienceMums, a network for natural scientists. In this function, she became book author, speaker and trainer and published a wide range of articles around the topic “women & career”. Almost three

years later, she founded the career platform NaturalScience.Careers. ScienceMums then became part of this broader platform. Dr. Philipp Gramlich has studied and researched chemistry at various universities in Germany, Australia and Scotland with specialisations in DNA chemistry and molecular machines. After

experience at baseclick, a biotechnology start-up, he is currently Teamleader R&D, QC and Analytics at Eurofins Genomics as well as co-founder of NaturalScience.Careers.

Experts in the job

Two scientists are invited, who made it to a top position in e. g. industry, a governmental institute or patent law, but are still close enough to the target group in age so they can be related to. They will tell about their personal experiences, the challenges they met and how they coped with them. The speakers can provide a presentation to underscore key facts, but will focus on a strongly interactive session. A panel discussion with both speakers will round off the day.

Duration: 1 day Course type: To be determined Trainers: For this module we invite 2 natural scientists who

are professionally active in an area relevant to the participants´ interests.

Number of participants: 12 This seminar can be tailored to a female-only or mixed audience.

Company visits

What is it like outside of academia? What is the difference between working for a small or large company? Is working for a start-up or maybe a not-for-profit organisation supporting local biotechnology clusters an interesting alternative?

We aim to visit 2 to 3 companies/ organisations during a day trip. The participants have the ability to get to know the organisations, get a better understanding of the career opportunities in several representative work environments and establish valuable contacts outside of academia. We select and brief our hosts to provide you with relevant career info but

abstain from blunt corporate advertisement. We travel around by mini-bus with a lunch stop on the way. Typically, the visits will include a presentation, site visit and Q&A session with professionals from the company. We aim to broaden the perspective on potential work environments by the choice of the tour stops.

Duration: 1 day Course type: Excursion Trainers: Karin Bodewits and/ or Philipp Gramlich Number of participants: 10-20 This seminar can be tailored to a female-only or mixed audience.

How to row the boat? - Leadership skills

Leadership has undergone changes- in parallel with changes to our work environments. Flatter hierarchies, project work in a matrix structure and more rapid changes of assignments, locations and colleagues are but some of the new challenges we all face. Interpersonal skills become ever more important when leading a team or a project: for motivation, conflict resolution or work delegation. Depending on the wishes of the group, different aspects of this highly important skill set will be emphasized. Examples for topics that are often requested: - Gender-specific communication: sometimes it´s like learning a new language! - How to say no: timing, respect, consequence. - Leading a diverse team: age, gender, cultural background... We´re all individuals and so are our teams. Can we find a leadership style that fits them all and is this even desirable.

Duration: 2 days Course type: 30% theory, 70% practical examples Trainers: Philipp Gramlich Number of participants: Max. 12 This seminar can be tailored to a female-only or mixed audience.

Negotiation

Negotiation does not only happen on the flea market. It is one of the most important professional skills for virtually every type of profession. And it gets more important the further you move up the ladder. Look at the gender wage gap as an example.

While frying burgers at McDonalds is a showcase for gender equality, management isn´t! The gender wage gap, adjusted for professional choices and working hours, grows from zero to 20% as you change from a chicken costume into finer dress! Discrimination and biases account for some of this, but can hardly explain this steep increase. At higher positions you can and should negotiate! And salary is by far not the only thing you´ll negotiate about throughout your (professional) life: where to go on holidays with your partner, how to arrange yourself with the trumpet-playing neighbour and why your spoiled brat should eat her veggies, all these more or less fierce

negotiations boil down to the same overarching principles. But is there anything you can do about your negotiation skills? Yes! Negotiating is a matter of practice as many others skills and can be learned. Many of the characteristics of a good negotiator are actually quite sympathetic ones and have nothing to do with ripping people off in shabby deals: building relationships, good communication skills and a solid preparation.

Convincing & debating

Scientists are often in the situation that they need to discuss their scientific findings or their need for extra funding or resources with other members of the scientific community or with the general public. The ability of expressing yourself in a concise and clear manner, using strong arguments, is therefore of utmost importance. This interactive seminar with role-playing, public speaking exercises, argumentation examples and debates, will help scientists to successfully engage during a wide variety of interactions with other scientists and non-scientists. Your question and answer sessions will never be the same again. You will convince your boss to buy this fantastic Mass Spec. You will disarm other people´s arguments against you as you can look behind their facade. And last but not least, you will win on paper (e. g. research- and grant- proposals)!

Duration: 2 days Course type: 10% theory, 90% practical examples Trainers: Karin Bodewits and/ or Philipp Gramlich Number of participants: 6-14 This seminar is for mixed audiences.

Time management (for part-timers)

Every week has 7 days, 168 hours or 10080 minutes…. a lot of time to do a lot of things! Still, many of us suffer from the feeling of always having too little of it. You might not give it enough thought on how you actually want to spend it and how to distribute it between your career, family, friends and hobbies. These are also no easy questions with answers to be found in a text book- the “ideal time schedule” is simply too different from one person to the other. During this seminar we will analyse the individual schedules of the week and provide tools and ideas to optimise your time investment. Furthermore, we will discuss how to balance science and life in different contexts and how to plan your days in a flexible work environment. The aim is not only to work more efficiently and to reduce personal “stress”, but also to be more satisfied and successful in your career and your personal life.

Duration: 1-2 days Course type: 50% theory and 50% practical examples Trainers: Karin Bodewits or Philipp Gramlich: Max. No. of Participants: 12 This seminar can be tailored to a female-only or mixed audience.

Intercultural communication & genderlect

A more global economy, international work environments and the increase of females holding leadership positions, all have an impact on our work environment as well as our society as a whole. This diversification of teams brings a lot of advantages, but also challenges. Hence, a good understanding of each other’s communication styles and behaviours is one of the keys to professional success. Do men really not listen and do females really always complain? And, why does this foreign colleague say “yes”, but means “no”? How do I convince my boss within minutes and collaborate effectively around the globe? And, are misunderstandings really inevitable? In this seminar, cross-cultural barriers, gender-specific communication and convincing structures will be discussed and practised.

Duration: 1 day Course type: 50% theory, 50% practical examples Trainers: Karin Bodewits Number of participants: Max. 12 This seminar can be tailored to a female-only or mixed audience.
