General compulsory education

In 1774 Empress Maria Theresia established the general compuslory education (from the age of 6 to 12).

In Austria children must attend school for 9 years.

Childcare

In Nussdorf-Debant we have a Mother-Child-Center, a instituition that cares for children, whose parents are working. The children can stay there from 7a.m. to 7p.m. The childcare also is opened the whole year.

Kindergarten

In Nussdorf-Debant there also is a kindergarten, where children first can go to when they are 3 years old. In Austria it is compulsory to attend kindergarten for 1 year.

School Regulation

In Austria it‘s possible to repeat a certain class (course) if a pupil fails it. If a pupil‘s school certificate contains more than two „Nicht Genügend“ (E) he/she has to repeat the class (course). But if the school certificate ONLY contains two „Nicht Genügend“ (E), there still is the chance of doing a repeat examination in autumn.

In Austria there are 5 different grades:• A Sehr gut (1) – best grade• B Gut (2)• C Befriedigend (3)• D Genügend (4)• E Nicht Genügend (5)

Elementary School

Every Austrian child has to attend elementary school (from the age of 6 to 10) Subjects:• German, Mathematics• Religion, P.E., Music, Geography and

Handicrafts. Some schools also offer scientific-orientated subjects.

Pupils attend our school from the age of 10 to 14.Our school puts the focus on:

Music, Italian und InformaticsOther subjects:• German, Mathematics, English• History, Geography, Biology, Music,

Physics, Chemistry, Cooking, Handictrafts, P.E., Informatics,…

Secondary School

This school type is similar to the new secondary school. In order to be admitted, the school certificate mustn‘t contain grades worse than „Befriedigend“ (C)

Special Needs School

This school type is designed for disabled children or for those, who have learning problems. Classes contain only few pupils and the teachers are specially trained (have a special education) in order to teach them. Children from the age of 6 to 16 attend these schools.

Polytechnic Institute

In Austria children must attend school for 9 years. Afterwards they can attend the polytechnic institute, which lasts for 1 year. There they pupils receive vocational training. The focus is on (free choice):

Apprenticeship

After completing the 9 compulsory school years, every child can decide to do an apprenticeship. The apprenticeship lasts for 3 to 4 years.

Agricultural SchoolThis school type lasts for 3 years and the foucs is on agriculture. The male pupils receive a more techinc-based education (wood processing, machine engineering).The female pupils recive a more service-based education (cooking, serving)

Tourism School

This type of school lasts for three years and the focus is on tourism, cooking and service.

This school type lasts for 4 years (age of 15 to 18) and pupils graduate at the age of 18. Then they also get their A-Levels.The focus is on:

Commercial Academy (HAK)

This school type lasts for 5 years and the focus is on economic subjects.It offers subjects such as informatics, languages, accounting,…At the end of the 5 years the pupils get their A-Levels and simultaneously complete a salesman occupation.

Commercial High School (HLW)

This school type also lasts for 5 years and the focus is on tourism. At the end of the 5 years the pupils get their A-Levels and simultaneously complete a education for touristic jobs (cook, waiter/waitress, receptionis)

Technic Institution (HTL)

Pupils have to attend this type of school for 5 years. It offers various diciplines: construction, design, electrical engineering, mechatronics, aircraft construction,…
