SCHOOL COUNCIL
Next meetingWednesday 21st May
NEW BASKETBALL BACKBOARDS HAVE
BEEN INSTALLED
Dear Parents and Carers
At the School Council’s first meeting, a new sub-committee was formed, Community Building. The brief of this committee is to look at ways in which we can build stronger relationships within and outside the school community and foster improved communication. As a result, a regular report will now appear in the school newsletter, written either by Geoff, a classroom teacher or myself, with the intention of sharing with the community the various things that are happening throughout the school.
This year the school is undergoing the school review process, which takes place every 4 years. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development mandate this process. It provides the school with an opportunity to reflecton our achievements in a systematic and comprehensive way through analysing progress over the past 4 years and identifying areas for future development. Once this review is completed, the school will then develop its Strategic Planfor 2014-2017. This process is being led by two of our leading teachers, Nerida Mellerick and Kristy Keenan.
As many of you may know, Geoff Warren is a strong advocate for students with disabilities, particularly in regards to inclusion within mainstream schools. This week saw Geoff invited to address members of the House and Senate and numerous other State and Federal bodies in the lead up to the Federal budget in relation to disabilities as outlined in the Gonski report. This presentation was in Parliament House and Geoff was joined by Dr Ken Boston (Gonski review member). Following the presentation, Australia wide media interviewed the speakers involved. It is possible that there will be an article reflecting on Clifton Hill Primary School in The Sydney Morning Herald this weekend.
This has been a big week for our grade 3 and 5 students who have participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy against national standards for all Australian children. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued laterthis year.
We wish Geoff an enjoyable long service leave holiday in Germany, France and Italy. He will be departing on Friday 23rd May and will return at the beginning of term 3.
Regards - Megan Smith
University of Western Australia
Remember when you believed in anything and everything?
Researchers from the University of Western Australia are investigating children’s ability to detect and avoid potentially harmful social interactions, such as being easily fooled or tricked into doing something. We are looking tosee how this develops in children, and when children outgrow this vulnerability.
We are looking for parents of Kindergarten – Year 6 children across Australia to complete an online survey (15 - 20 minutes). Participants will go into a draw to win one of 10 $50 gift certificates to Coles/Myers.

He needs to learn to be comfortable in lots of different environments and to not be distracted by things around him. To help Spencer learn to be a good Seeing Eye Dog we ask that you please don't pat or talk to him when he is at school. Although he is very cute he will one day have an important job to do and must learn to focus and concentrate.
The blue coat he wears identifies him as a Seeing Eye Dog. He needs to learn that when he is wearing the coat he is working and your cooperation will greatly assist himin achieving this.
Meet Spencer
Spencer is living with Oskar (3RK) and Felix (1VS)and is training to become a Seeing Eye Dog.
CANBERRA TOUR – GRADE 6
Grade 6 students will be undertaking an educational tour of the national capital next week.
While on this tour they experience a variety of educational programs focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy which will support the ‘Discovering Democracy’ unit being studiedin the classroom this term. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist parents in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution was used to offset the cost of the camp. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.
Activities undertaken as part of the educational tour will include visits to;
• National Capital Exhibition
• Embassy Drive
• Australian War Memorial
• Portrait Gallery
• Old Parliament House
• Questacon
• Australian Electoral Commission

From the Library
We are always grateful to receive donations forthe library, but can you please consider what you donate to us. Board books for babies, teenage novels and books that are more than5 years old are not useful and we end up having to store them for months before wecan donate them to the fair.

Some of the new books in the library this month:
Pick of the many picture books are The Duck and the Darklings by the inimitable Glenda Millard and Stephen Michael King and My Dad’s The Coolest by husband and wife team Rosie Smith and Bruce Whatley which has the most delightful illustrations. Here In The Garden by Briony Stewart is very touching.
Novels include the new Belinda Murrell, The Sequin Star, which time slips the reader back to 1932 in the circus. A new character in the Our Australian Girl series features Daisy who is growing up in the 1930s, A new Tom Gates is A Tiny Bit Lucky. I am loving the latest Dragonkeeper book, Shadow Sister, by local author Carole Wilkinson.
On the shelves soon are:
A new series by Susannah McFarlane EJ Spy School for beginning readers; for Alice-Miranda fans there is a new book set in Japan; the first three books in the 39 Clues series which I’ve had a few requests for; Pirouette by Robyn Pavati which was recommended by a Grade 6 student; and the sequels in Catherine Jinks’ City of Orphans series whose first book is shortlisted in the Children’s Book Council Awards;and lots more!
In non-fiction we have new books in the perennially popular subjects of pets, cooking and dinosaurs.
There is something here for everyone.

French Conversation in Melbourne
Last year in French Corner we wrote about the various apps available to help students practise their French when not at school. Why not combine a little French and a little Maths at the same time?
Révise tes tables de multiplication by Hachette Livre is an app where students can practise their times tables in French. The ‘lite’ version is free, however, it only gives you access to the 3 times table. The ‘full’ version is $2.49 on itunes.

CINESEEDS - Stimulating young minds through filmOnce again, HRAFF presents CineSeeds - an event for young people and their parents alike. This youth orientated film will entertain, inspire and educate young people on human rights and social justice issues. CineSeeds is an opportunity for attendees to create opinions and develop an understanding of issues that will shape their future.MIA AND THE MIGOOCreated from an astounding 500,000 hand-painted frames of animation, the exquisite second feature from French animator Jacques-Remy Girard invokes the painterly strokes of Van Gogh, Monet and Cezanne. With the future of life on Earth in the balance, the story follows a wild-haired young Mia on her quest through the South American rainforest to find her father, who has been trapped in a construction-site landslide. Along the way, she meets the quirky, mysterious forest spirits called the Migoo, with whom Mia joins forces to stop profit-hungry developers from destroying the ancient and sacred tree of life. Mia and the Migoo brings important environmental issues to life in stunning colours and delightful brushstrokes. The screening will be preceded by a performance by the Sacred Heart Primary School’s Harmony in Strings Program established by the Songroom. The children have written a piece in collaboration with Husky Gawenda from the popular Melbourne band HUSKY. FROM THE EDITOR Clifton Hill Primary School has an incredible community, whose contribution to the Fair has helped resource the school with many items, including a new Science Building, installation of fake grass in the school grounds, development of the gardens, installation of fences and the procurement of classroom resources. This year areas we hope to fund raise for the following three much needed facilities:
Air conditioning units for the Multi Purpose & Art Rooms. Resources and equipment for the new Science Building. A new additional playground for Page street.
There are many coordinator roles that will require a handover this year, as the children of these parents are moving onto new phases in their education. All vacancies are highlighted on the attached Stallholder list and will also be displayed on the school noticeboards. Over the next few months, our aim is to fill these roles. If you like to lend a hand or learn more about any of these roles, please contact Koula on [email protected] Our next committee meeting is on Wednesday 11th June at 7.30pm. If you are interested in finding out more about the Fair Committee or would like to attend the next meeting, then please contact me. Thank you, Melinda Wilson, Fair Co coordinator 2014 e: [email protected] m: 0414 278 479
Co-ordinating Clothiers Did you know that the Clothing stall raised $5,000 during the 2013 Fair Day? This is due to the dedicated team of volunteers who will continue their tireless work again this year. The stall is also looking for a coordinator/s to oversee this team. This involves organizing the team of volunteers to gather and sort donated clothing, then to set up and work on the stall during Fair Day. Interested? Then contact Koula on [email protected]
Co-ordinating Gyros Despite the fact that the Gyro stall is only a couple of years old within the
Fair Community, it has proven to be one of the most popular. This year, we are looking at a Coordinator who will manage the stall. This will involve organising the food and equipment and coordinating the stall roster for the day.
Interested? Then contact Koula on [email protected]
Share Your Passion: Cook for the Community Some of the most popular stalls on Fair Day are those cooking up delicious food. This year, we are looking for budding cooks to help out in feeding the hungry masses. If you enjoy feeding family and friends why not share your cooking passion by cooking for the school community on Fair day. Interested? Then contact Koula on [email protected]

Propagate, Plant, Present, Procure Plants There are many ways to help out in any of the stalls looking for assistance to ensure success. With the Plant Stall, you can consider any of the
following options to lend a hand: - Propagate herbs, succulents, natives etc. Biggest sellers are any
plants/items selling for under $20. Do it with your kids, a neighbor or even a relative.
- Decorate a pot and even better, get your kids to decorate one or many. - Small succulents sold really well last year. However sales went through
the roof when we added fairy figurines, fairy dust and lolly pops to them! Any such donations will be gratefully accepted.
- Donate rolls of brown paper and string to wrap the plants in. Donations are ideal, however if you know of any supplier who is willing to donate these items in large volumes, please let us know.
- Consider donating your time (and your selling skills) to look after the stall. 1-‐2 hours during the day is sufficient.
- Ideas for sponsorship from local business which might be relevant eg. Suppliers of cut flowers, herbs etc. ideas will be greatly appreciated.
We can use all the help we can get especially on the plant front. Call Penny on 0401 713 204 or email at [email protected].
Silent Auction Seekers As mentioned in our last newsletter, now is the time to join a fun group of
organisers, walkers and wrappers who make up the Silent Auction team. If you want to find out how great it is to be part of the most successful school community fundraising effort, contact Ros on 0423055100 or email at [email protected]
Collective Apprentice: Learn from the Master Sadly after many years as the individual responsible for
-‐op (looking after the Fair equipment shared by all schools in the area), Roderick Poole will be leaving the school community (at the end of this year). This means this integral role will become vacant. If you are keen in taking on this role, this year is the best time to
. Roderick will introduce ators
who are involved with the installation and removal of the Fair equipment. Interested? Contact Roderick on [email protected]
Co-ordinator Call-Out Despite there being considerable time between now and Fair Day, there are still many vacancies to fill, most of which are coordinators for various stalls. Some of these include:
-‐ Wash Against Waste; -‐ Jaffa Smasha.
Interested? Then contact Koula on [email protected]
