PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Friends,

I would like to thank the many families who came along to our Working Bee on Saturday afternoon – what a terrific turn out! We managed to tick quite a few items off our large TODO list, so thank you very much on behalf of our teaching staff, students and especially Mr Brooks! Our next Working Bee will be on Saturday June 9, so please save the date!

It has also been lovely to catch up with parents at the social evenings run by the P & C over the past couple of Saturday evenings and I thank you for your support of this ‘getting to know you’ initiative. Well done and thank you to Ro Brazel for working so hard to bring our community together. The last of these evenings, for our parents in Years 4-6, is tomorrow evening and I am looking forward to meeting up with many parents then.

Maths Information Night 1More than 50 parents attended our first Maths Information Night on Number and Algebra last Monday evening, presented by our wonderful Deputy Principal, Mrs Laurinda Lomas.

Parents learnt more about how we teacher Number and Algebra at school and were able to ask questions regarding how their children engage with maths concepts so that they may assist them appropriately at home. I would like to thank Mrs Lomas for her support of our learning community and remind parents that the second Maths Information Night will held in Term 2…watch this space!

Feedback from our Meet the Teacher Afternoon SurveyOverall, we received 72 responses to our survey, with 56 parents reporting they were generally happy with the event. Feedback was also obtained from the Class Parents and P&C meetings, with the following points being raised:• Having time to talk personally to the teacher or for the teacher to share a little about themselves as a

teacher/person was highly valued • Having something where the parents all get to meet was desirable • Being in the classroom was highly valued• A handout of all generic information was valued to avoid repetition of information.• Information regarding individual class routines/procedures was highly valued, over the generic info.• Meeting the grade team is desirable – perhaps upcoming excursions/events relevant to that grade could be

discussed first and then move to classrooms. • Having a gap in between sessions was not seen to be a solution to the parking situation as parents often

chat to each other after meetings

Suggestions for improvement included:• 2 sessions – one after school and one later in the evening however, this does not allow parents to meet• Various grades on different nights but grouped together eg- K-2-4-6 on one night and 1-3-5 on an

alternate night• Evening session to start after 6pm to allow working parents to attend.• Having the sessions earlier than Week 4.

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions which will be factored into our planning for 2019.

Zone Swimming Carnival Thank you to Mr Jack Tier and Miss Dani Levido for their support of our Zone Swimming Carnival team last week.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING & VIOLENCE Today, Friday March 16 our school participated in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.

Students enjoyed some morning tea with their buddies and spent time developing mutually respectful relationships. At Elanora Heights we have taken a pro-active approach by integrating a program at a whole school level. Students from each stage have been instructed on age appropriate anti-bullying lessons ensuring Elanora Heights PS remains a safe and friendly environment where our children are happy, learn and grow.

. Our working bee on Saturday was an extremely productive and enjoyable afternoon. The autumn weather was spectacular and we had lots of parents, children and staff turn up to lend a hand. A trailer load of weeds and debris were carted off from the bottom entrance and the painting of our school colours has transformed the entrance way of the hall next to the canteen. The paths and walls were also gernied near the Library and the ‘dungeon’ got a much needed clean out.

The workers were treated to freshly baked banana muffins from Heights Delights and of course there was the satisfaction of a job well done. Our smallest helpers will also be presented with a mini merit at lines for collecting uniforms, lunchboxes and rubbish from around the school. Thank you to Janine who coordinated the day, and to everyone who came along and made such a difference to the school’s grounds.

Our Parents’ Nights Out have been enjoyed and supported by many in our school community. It has been great to socialise without children and also mix and chat to some of our school’s wonderful staff. Thank you to our social committee who coordinated these events – and if you haven’t been to one yet, there’s still time! The Year 4, 5 and 6 Night Out is tomorrow, Saturday March 17 at 7pm.

Last call for the World’s Greatest Shave Event which is on this afternoon at Narroy Reserve 3-6pm. If you can fit it around your child’s sport training and are keen to get involved for a good cause, both children and parents can get a shave or a colour. It’s a great event with bbq and even a jumping castle so bring the whole family.

Time is a ticking to get out and sell as many raffle tickets as you can manage! There are only two weeks left to give yourself the chance of winning the grand prize of a car or become the highest ticket seller at Elanora. The highest ticket seller from both infants and primary will receive a mini iPad thanks to our sponsors Drake Real Estate and The Racquet Club. All tickets, sold and unsold, must be returned after Easter on Tuesday April 3.

S... Zone Swimming Carnival

On Tuesday, March 6, thirty five students from Elanora Heights Public School attended the Pittwater Zone Swimming Carnival at the Warringah Aquatic Centre.

All children represented our school with pride, displaying respectful Elanora Etiquette towards teachers, parents and fellow-students.

It was a successful day with Elanora qualifying for 28 lanes in the finals. From those, four students have qualified for regionals to be held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in Homebush on Wednesday March 28. We wish Jessica M, Dominic V, Kai C and Tom T the best of luck.

NEW YMCA OHSC COORDINATORDear Families,

I am excited to introduce to myself as the new YMCA coordinator. My name is Corey Strozer and I am settling into my new position in the beautiful school that I once attended as a child.

To give you some information about myself, I am currently in my third year of university studying a Bachelor of Primary Education. Throughout my career, I have assisted in coordinating roles at other OSHC services, worked as an SLSO (student support learning officer) and have just recently volunteered overseas in East Timor working as a teacher and assisting in a beautiful orphanage. If I have not yet met you, I very much look forward to that.

My promise is to give your children the best possible experience here at the YMCA and ultimately ensure that all families at my centre feel respected, safe and cared for. Respect, Achievement and Responsibility is something that is going to be followed through here at YMCA and I trust that you will soon see this.

Many thanks,

Corey StrozerCentre Coordinator

... School Cross Country Carnival.... |....Emma WidmanOnly three weeks to go until our School Cross Country Carnival! Classes have been busy improving their cross country fitness and we are looking forward to a wonderful event at our school. We welcome you to join us between 9:00am and 12:35pm on Tuesday April 3.

Thank you to all of those parents who have kindly volunteered to help marshal the course during the carnival.

We are still seeking parents who are able to help marshal the course. As a course marshal you will be standing at a point around the course ensuring students are safe and happy. This gives you the perfect vantage point to watch your child run at the same time!

If you are able to volunteer please send your name, child’s name, child’s class and time available (either 9:00-10.30am or 10:30-12:30pm) to

THE STELLAR ROOM We all want to give our children the extra edge to keep them motivated and engaged at school. And many of us are busy working full-time and can’t come into the school to help strengthen that home-school connection.

But there is an opportunity you may not have considered, and that is to ask a person in your extended network to come into the school to help out! That person acts as a representative for your family, and a special friend of your child. Even if your child is academically strong, please consider your wider social circle and ask them to help the school support those students who need some extra time reading to an adult.

The Stellar Reading Program still needs 7 more volunteers to spend 2 hours a week reading with Year 1 & 2 students. All that is required is an appreciation of children. We supply ongoing training, support and tea!

Grandparents, neighbours, family friends and other relatives are all welcome! You will see the pride in your child, as they know that their family is actively involved in making their school better and helping their friends and classmates.

When we strengthen our youngest readers, we strengthen our entire community. The glow on your child’s face is the icing on the cake!

We are hopping towards Easter and have a number of fun things running for the children at Heights Delights. Our colouring in competition is about to begin. Entries should have been delivered to your child’s classroom this week. There are two printouts and there will be two winners - an infants student and a primary student. Entry is free and the winner will win an Easter Bunny shaped fruit platter for his or her class.

The canteen continues to have buttered hot cross buns available for $1 from now until Easter. Also, new this week are frozen mango smoothie pops. These little frozen treats are 80c and complement our existing flavours of strawberry, watermelon, tropical, chocolate milk and banana smoothie. All of our pops are made in-house and are classified as EVERYDAY menu items.

The school’s cross country will be held straight after Easter on Tuesday April 3. The canteen will be open on this day and will make refreshments available to students and parents. If you are able to volunteer for a period of time during the morning, please contact Ingrid. Extra hands at the counter will be much appreciated and keep wait times to a minimum.

Did you know that our chicken tenders come with a free fruit token? Simply take your stamped lunch bag to the canteen and select a fruit item off our menu. Choose from our new fruit salad cups, apple slinky, frozen orange wedges or pineapple rings.

To volunteer at the canteen contact Ingrid on 9913 272 or [email protected] or 0416 258 626.
