PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Friends,

It is hard to believe that we are already half way through the term and that winter officially starts next week! All students should now be wearing their full winter uniform as the transition period has now closed.

It was another action packed week at Elanora, with students attending the Brian Palmer Shield Gala day on Monday, the ICAS digital technologies test on Tuesday, the Life Education van arriving on Wednesday, the Pioneers in Petticoats incursion on Wednesday and Dancesport commencing on Thursday! My thanks to the many staff involved in these initiatives, namely Mr Jono Rosconi, Mr Jack Tier, Ms Vicki Bosler, Ms Ute Johnson and our Year 5 staff, Ms Sylvia Zaratsian, Mrs Clare Hagon and Miss Charlotte Reddan.

To top off a huge week, we have the Working Bee this Saturday and I hope to see many of you there from 1-4pm to lend a hand. Come along and have a chat over a shovel or a paintbrush!

Zone Success!Congratulations to Keeley H, Xavier B and Tyrone F who have progressed through to the Regional Cross Country Carnival to be held later this term. Despite the wet weather, approximately 60 students gave it their all to represent Elanora Heights PS last Friday at Rat Park. My thanks to Ms Emma Widman and Mrs Rebecca New who were team Elanora Managers on the day. Great job, everyone!

School BackpacksOver the next 18 months, we would like to phase out all non-Elanora backpacks to help improve safety procedures at the school. When all students have the same backpack, we are able to not only identify a non-school bag quickly, but also ensure that all students feel included. Our school backpacks are very reasonably priced at $49, making them considerably cheaper than many surf brand alternatives. The school bags will become mandatory from the beginning of next year, with Year 6 students able to phase out their existing bag prior to high school.

I thank you for your cooperation and support in this initiative.

Do you have a sibling starting Kindy in 2018?We are now accepting enrolments for 2018 so please make sure you get your sibling enrolment forms in bright and early to allow us to make plans for next year. We met many new families on Tuesday evening at our first Kindy 2018 Information Evening and I would like to thank our Enrolment Officer, Mrs Louise Shea, our Kindergarten Assistant Principal, Mr Dave Waters and our Deputy Principal, Mrs Laurinda Lomas for their significant contributions to this event. We are looking forward to meeting our new enrolments at Orientation later in the year.

Dancesport commences for Year 5It was with much anticipation and great delight that we launched our Dancesport program for 2017 on Thursday this week. The students were very curious to learn what the program was all about and to meet their wonderful dance teacher, Mr Alex Fulbert. We were also delighted to have the company of Mr Gordon Gilkes, the Dancesport Director, who came along to meet the students.

The Dancesport program uses ballroom dancing to teach the students interpersonal skills, team work, self-respect and respect of others. I am very proud to be part of the organising committee for the inaugural Northern Sydney Dancesport Challenge to be held in Term 4 at Homebush. Our first Elanora Heights Dancesport Gala Evening will be held on Thursday 7 September where all students will showcase what they have learnt throughout the program – a very special night indeed!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

K-6 Disco Thursday next week!In keeping with the dancing theme, we will be holding our first K-6 Disco next Thursday 1 June from 5pm – 6:30pm. This event will be jointly hosted by our P & C and our teaching staff, with resident DJs Dave Waters and Jono Rosconi playing the tunes! Teaching staff will also be organising the evening, with games and dancing organised for all students. This will mean the event can be a kiss and drop affair, so why not make the most of it and enjoy some quiet time while the children have some fun? Please see event details in the P&C section of this newsletter.

Premier’s Debating ChallengeThis week Elanora hosted the first round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge with our Year 5 and 6 debating teams challenging Mona Vale Public School in the first round of the series. Year 6 debated that All Students Should Learn a Musical Instrument and Year 5 debated that Primary School Students Should Have a 3 Day Weekend… some very interesting topics!

Year 6 team: Lulu L, Maisy B, Alice M, Vania Z, Jonah K, Lauren M and Angelina MYear 5 team: Louisa E, Jaya V, Arielle H, Lexi M, Lachie S and Cooper B

Both debates went extremely well, with the Year 6 team having a victory and the Year 5 being narrowly beaten. Of particular note was the reflection both teams participated in after the debates, resulting in an excellent educational process. I would like to thank Miss Janayah Heazlewood and Miss Claire

Hurley for their outstanding preparation of our teams and Mr Luke Beveridge for his excellent adjudication.

Police ForumOn Wednesday morning I attended a regular Principal’s Forum hosted by our Local Area Command to examine safety procedures across the Northern Beaches and to discuss issues directly related to School Safety and Security. These forums are an excellent initiative of our LAC to promote positive relationships with schools, leading to improved safety and support.

As part of this discussion it was recommended that parents connect to the Northern Beaches LAC Facebook page to keep abreast of local issues and events

Until next time...

MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION FINALSAll students in Years 3-6 have presented speeches to their classes this term, developing their skills in public speaking and writing persuasive texts. Listening to these speeches has also been a valuable learning experience in recognising and responding to effective persuasive techniques. The Multicultural Perspectives speeches provide a rich range of content about this important global issue.

Congratulations to the following students who will be presenting in our school finals on Monday 29 May:

Stage 2 Finalists: Imogen W, Harper E, Lachlan T, Grace B, Millie M, Scarlett H, Jessica K, Ruby M, Jordon C, Manon L, Cooper W, Zean P, Amelie E

Stage 3 Finalists: Jessica S, Joshua P, Lazar R, Mia M, Jiya V, Kate H, Mikala W, Sarah M, Vania Z, Maisy B, Lulu L, Oscar B

Parents are most welcome to attend with the Stage 3 finals commencing at 9.20am and Stage 2 finals at 11.15am. Both will take place in the school hall.

Two students from each stage will be chosen by an external adjudicator to participate in the local finals at Mona Vale Public School on Thursday 15 June. Good luck to all of those involved. I look forward to hearing these talented speakers.

... DEBATINGYear 5 RecountOn Tuesday 23 May, our Year Five debating team had their first debate against Mona Vale Public School. Our topic was - Primary Schools Should Have Three Day Weekends. We did a coin toss and got to be affirmative. We had 1 hour to prepare our speeches and debate. After that hour was up we had to present our debate. There was a first speaker, a second speaker, a third speaker and a team advisor. For Elanora, our first speaker was Lexi M, our second speaker was Jiyantha V, our third speaker was Arielle H and our Team Advisor was Louisa E. We also had a time keeper, who was Cooper B and our chairman was Lachlan S. Our adjudicator was Luke Beveridge.

We started our debate in the after school care room. Our first speaker started then Mona Vale’s first speaker and so on until all speakers had presented.

After the debate we listened to the feedback and we found out who won. Sadly we lost to Mona Vale. We both had a good debate and were very strong and now we know what to improve on in our next debate. After the debate we got to eat popcorn and drink juice.

By Lexi M, Louisa E and Arielle H

Year 6 RecountOn Tuesday 23 May, Elanora Heights Public School’s H1 Debating Team faced Mona Vale Public School in a close debate. The topic was that ‘All kids have to play a musical instrument from Kindergarten to Year 12’. Our first speaker was Lulu L, in second was Alice M, third speaker was Maisy B and the fourth speaker or team advisor was Vania Z.

We were the negative team, meaning that we had to tell the adjudicator what was wrong with this topic. The adjudicator’s name was Luke Beveridge. Lauren M was the Chairperson and Jonah K was the timekeeper. Both teams had very strong points with good examples to back them up and rebuttals that made you question the opposition’s arguments. Overall it was a great debate with Elanora Heights only just coming out on top.

Great job H1!

..... Another week, another great community turn out at one of our P&C events. The second

hand uniform sale was very well attended; with our community taking full advantage of our cheaply priced winter uniform items. The uniform team did a great job on the day and managed to raise more than $1,000. As mentioned previously, the second hand uniform shop will be closed over June.

Our winter wonderland disco will take place next week on Thursday 1st June. The disco will run slightly differently this term because our wonderful teachers have stepped in to fill the void of our old DJ. There will only be one session, from 5pm to 6:30pm, which will accommodate all Elanora students from Kindergarten to Year 6. A note was sent home this week – I’ll wait while you dig through your child’s school bag to find it…. Entry is $15 for the first child, with each additional sibling $10. Included in the entry price are a bag of “glow goodies”. All students need to bring their own water bottle and will be asked to remain in the hall for the duration of the disco. The canteen will be closed for this event so no food will be available to purchase. Our year 1 parents are the hosts of this event. If you have a child in Year 1 and can assist with marking children’s names off at the entry point, please contact Ro at [email protected].

A reminder that we are still looking for volunteers to form a playground design sub-committee. Our SRC will be canvassing the student body for ideas over the next few weeks, but we need your enthusiasm and experience to bring this project to life. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in joining this sub-committee.

ZONE CROSS COUNTRYCongratulations to all of our amazing competitors! Last Friday these students travelled to Rat Park to participate in the Zone Cross Country event. Nine schools in our zone competed on the day with 54 students in each race. Elanora Heights students were excellent representatives for our school with every participant striving to do their best and achieving results they should be proud of. Overall our school finished 8th place in the event. Eleven of our students finished in the top twenty places in their individual races, with three students qualifying for the Regional Cross Country in June. The heavy rain during the morning didn’t deter our competitors and it was a pleasure to witness their enthusiastic and supportive attitudes, as well as their great level of sportsmanship throughout the day.

We would like to extend a very special thanks to the parents who marshalled a station at the event - the day could not go ahead without you. Also a big thank you to other parents and family members who were able to attend and cheer on the runners.

A special mention to these students who finished in the top 10:

12/13 Years – Keeley H (3rd) Xavier B (4th) 11 Years – Will P (7th) 10 years – Tyrone F (4th) 8/9 Years – Zahli S (7th)

Good luck at the regional carnival Keeley, Xavier and Tyrone.

Warm up over winter with Barb’s pumpkin soup. Available for recess or lunch and served in two sizes – a cup with saladas ($3.00) or a bowl with a roll ($5.00).

Or try our toasted bolognaise sandwich with cheese at recess on Fridays (whole or half, $3.50/$2.00). Both of these additions are sure to prove popular with our PSSA kids and we suspect our teachers! Our OCCASIONAL rated pie will now be available on Wednesdays as well as Fridays.

Also new to our frozen snack menu will be frozen chocolate milk pops and frozen banana smoothie pops. Both cost $1 and are classified as EVERYDAY menu items. These new menu items will be available from Week 6.

Under the new canteen guidelines drinks with added sugar can’t be sold at schools. Drinks that contain 99% fruit or vegetable juice are classed as EVERYDAY, and so too is coconut water (as long as no sugar is added). The exception to this rule is flavoured milk because only 1 in 5 Australian kids receive their daily serve of dairy.

Heights Delights will be phasing out sparkling juices, aloe drinks and iced teas to comply with these guidelines. EVERYDAY Up & Go’s will be re-introduced for $2 with flavoured sippah straws remaining on the menu at $2.
