Learning English
Our most popular programme offeredat four residential centres combinesintensive English classes with a widerange of activities which vary day to day.The teaching programme is split betweenEnglish Skills and English Workshops.
If you’re unsure of your level, ouronline level check will help you choosethe best Discovery option for you.
On arrival, you will be given a writtenand oral test and placed into an EnglishSkills class appropriate for your ageand level.
This ensures maximum progress whilstencouraging additional interactionwith new students.
Placement Testing
• Topic-based classes (e.g. Britishculture, future societies, film &music) help develop core skills (e.g.in using grammar, reading, writing,listening, and building confidence -with emphasis on spoken English).
• Lessons are designed to challengeand inspire. Our syllabus is based onTrinity GESE/CEFR (CommonEuropean Framework of Reference),and our creative team bring it tolife!
• Our maximum class size is 12*international students.
EXAMS (Optional and at extra cost)
Trinity Graded Exam in Spoken English(GESE) - optional (£95).
This oral exam has 12 levels (N.B. Dueto the complex topics involved examsat level 8 and above may not besuitable for very young learners). YourDirector of Studies will decide whichlevel you will take. Exams take placesubject to demand.
We recommend you take this exam tomake you more confident in usingspecific language and to gain aninternationally-recognised certificate.
Preparation classes are given for oneweek before the exam. This may be inplace of either English Skills or EnglishWorkshop classes. With the support andencouragement of English Student Hostsour students achieve impressive results!

AIRPORT TRANSFERS
We offer a professional and friendly‘Meet and Greet’ service.
Once you have collected your luggageyou will come out of the Customs Halland see one of our airport represent-atives holding a Discovery Summersign with your name. Coaches/taxisleave at regular intervals to take youto your centre.
On departure, we check you in foryour flight and see you through todepartures.
Airport transfers by coach or taxi areincluded in the fees on publishedarrival and departure dates for flightsscheduled to arrive/depart between09.00 and 15.00 hours from/to specificairports (see fees sheet for details).
Special private transfers (at extra cost)can be arranged at any other time andfrom any other airport.
We recommend you book your flightsas early as possible.
WELFARE
Coming to England is an excitingadventure. To get the most from yourstay you need to feel safe, secure andhappy.
Each centre has dedicated, trainedhouse parents/welfare staff. They willbe there to welcome you, answer anyquestions and make you feel at home.They are available for you 24 hours aday to administer any medication, lookafter you if you are sick and generallycare for your wellbeing.
We also have designated First Aidersand/or visiting nurses. There is easyaccess to nearby health centres/hospitals.
There is a 24-hour emergency phone forparents and students to call if necessary.
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD
Boys and girls are accommodatedseparately. We normally place you in abedroom with students from othercountries. Where we offer singlerooms, we mix nationalities incorridors. There is a personal laundryservice once or twice a week. Our staffalso live in the boarding houses.
We provide a healthy range of foodthat includes typical English meals andinternational food.
MAKING NEW FRIENDS
The Discovery Summer experience isabout maximising opportunities formaking friends and improving yourEnglish. This is why we limit the time youcan spend on your mobile phone/WiFi.
We mix nationalities throughout theday to give you more opportunities todevelop real friendships.

Before excursions you’ll research yourdestinations in class. Small tasksmay be set whilst you’re out andabout (e.g. a photographicscavenger hunt) to help you getthe most out of your trips.
BRITISH CULTURE
When people think of Britainthey may think of drinkingtea, eating fish and chips andbeing on time, but there is
much more to learn! Throughout yourstay, you'll be experiencing authenticBritish culture every day – in your EnglishSkills classes (British Etiquette), EnglishWorkshops (Kings & Queens), at atraditional English tea party, in eveningactivities (British summer fete) orresearching British history beforeexcursions to famous landmarks (Warwick Castle).

Multi-activities include sports, arts andcreative activities and vary centre tocentre every day.

Marymount International School, a small safe centre, islocated on a private estate just 18km from central London.The campus is ideal for young children. It is safe, compactand has many excellent facilities, set in beautiful landscapedlawns and gardens. Heathrow and Gatwick airports underan hour away.
Nearby is the town of Kingston-upon-Thames, on the banksof the River Thames. Hampton Court Palace and RichmondPark, London’s largest royal park, are close by.
Classrooms are modern and well-equipped. Good use ismade of the IT facilities in the school library.
The multi-purpose sports hall caters for a wide variety ofindoor sports, including basketball, volleyball andbadminton. Outdoors, there is 5-a-side football, a tenniscourt and lawns for other games. The FabLab, art studioand spacious auditorium offer students maximumopportunities for creativity.

Woldingham School, a safe centre with extensive grounds,is situated in a beautiful, secluded valley of 280 hectares inSurrey, near Oxted. It is only 25km from London and closeto the M25 motorway. Gatwick is 30 minutes away andHeathrow an hour away. Direct trains from London Victoria toWoldingham station take 35 minutes.
Woldingham has extensive, landscaped grounds and offerssome excellent facilities: an arts centre, a home economicsclassroom for cooking, an impressive auditorium foroccasional film nights, an indoor sports centre, indoorswimming pool and tennis dome, an adventure playground,tennis courts, football pitch and astroturf.
Within Marden House we have our classrooms, IT suite, newdining hall, common room and all dormitory accommodation.

RADLEY COLLEGE (Teens and Juniors)
Radley College, one of Britain’s leading independentschools, was founded in 1847. It is situated in Radleyvillage, 8km south of Oxford, 3km north of Abingdon andjust over an hour by road or rail from London. The nearest airport is London Heathrow.
The campus, set in 325 hectares of parkland, is welcomingand completely self-contained. The facilities for study andrecreation are outstanding.
Sporting facilities include football,rugby and cricket pitches,athletics track, tennis courts (hardand astroturf), a Real Tenniscourt, squash and fives courts,indoor 25m 6-lane swimming/diving pool and sports hall. Thereis also an impressive dramatheatre and large IT suites. Allmeals are taken in the historic,oak-panelled dining hall.

SHREWSBURY SCHOOLShrewsbury is well-known as a traditional independentschool. It was founded in 1552 and has Charles Darwinamongst its famous ‘old boys’. It is situated across theRiver Severn from the thriving market town of Shrewsbury.Manchester and Birmingham airports are approximately1.5 hours by road; London Heathrow 3-4 hours.
It has a very fine campus with both traditional andmodern buildings. Facilities for study and recreationinclude IT suites, a music school and large recreationspace. The school’s impressive sporting facilities includenumerous football pitches, an astroturf, tennis, squashand fives courts, an indoor sports hall and a 25m 6-laneswimming pool.
Shrewsbury has a magnificent campus withfirst-rate facilities for study, recreation and sports.

Tennis: 15 hours - on site. Our coaches work with smallgroups on all aspects of the game - tactical, technical (withvideo analysis), physical and mental. Tournament day atend of each week.
Golf: 15 hours - off site. Run at Shropshire's finest golfcourse by a highly experienced professional. All aspects ofthe game are taught on the covered driving range, thepitching/putting greens and on the 3, 9 and 18-holecourses. Suitable for both beginners and experiencedplayers.
Horse-riding: 12 hours - off site. A challengingprogramme for riders of all abilities. All aspects of horsemanagement are covered. You will gain confidence inhandling your horse in a variety of situations e.g. hacking,jumping, dressage and cross-country. On Saturdays we offere.g. team-building challenges, survival skills on site.
Adventure Sports: 12 hours - off site. Try differentactivities each morning e.g. mountain boarding,Segway riding, abseiling and high ropes, archery, claypigeon shooting, zip wire and rock climbing. On

Dance: 15 hours - on site. Led by trained danceprofessionals sessions include musical theatre, salsa, hiphop, Latin, ballet, jazz and contemporary routines.Different genres are introduced each day, leading to acostumed performance at the end of each week.

Coding with Raspberry Pi: 15 hours - Raspberry Pienables you to explore coding in a fun and practical way.You will develop problem-solving and critical thinkingskills whilst learning important new programming skillse.g. Linux shell commands, the Python programminglanguage, creating algorithms, testing programmes formistakes.
No prior knowledge of coding is required. The Pythonlanguage is great for both beginners and advancedprogrammers. It is versatile and rapidly growing inpopularity. Projects may include:
• Build and programme a robotic arm
• Create a ‘Rube Goldberg’ machine and programmethe Raspberry Pi to control it
• Create a voice controlled personal assistant. Writealgorithms to control your own robot that canswitch on radios and talk to other machines
• Create computer art, word games and morecomplex programmes using code.
Most students work in pairs maximising opportunities forcollaboration, analytical thinking and problem-solving.

WINCHESTER AND THE COLLEGEWinchester College lies just outside the historic walls ofWinchester. Founded in 1382, it is one of Britain's leadingacademic independent schools. The founder went on to setup New College, Oxford. The historic buildings offer atranquil environment in private and secluded grounds.
Winchester is 100km south west of London and 1.5 hours byroad from London Heathrow and Gatwick.

MARYMOUNT - Kensington pick-up/drop-offThis programme takes place at Marymount InternationalSchool in Kingston-upon-Thames where we also run aresidential programme. A private coach, accompanied byour staff, collects children from a pick-up/drop-off pointnear Gloucester Road Underground Station, Kensington andtakes them to the school. The journey takes just over 30minutes, depending on traffic.
The campus is located on a private residential estate and isideal for young learners. It is safe, compact and has manygreat facilities, all set in beautiful landscaped lawns andgardens. Classrooms are modern and well equipped. Gooduse is made of the IT facilities in the school library. Themulti-purpose sports hall caters for a wide variety of indoorsports, including basketball, volleyball and badminton.Outdoors, there is a 5-a-side football pitch, a tennis courtand lawns for other games. There is a FabLab, an art studioand a spacious auditorium where end-of-weekpresentations take place.
