Sunday, December 25, 2016 - The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas)
A very Merry Christmas to you and to all your loved ones from all of us here at Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica! From Father Romulus, Father Sam, Deacon Michael and myself – may all the blessings of this holy season be yours. These days of the Christmas Season pass so quickly. It’s good to remember that Christmas is not so much a day or a week, but it should be a way of life for all of us Christians – a time when we welcome Jesus into our hearts and our homes, and cherish his presence with us.
So much preparation goes into getting ready for Christmas. I would like to thank our maintenance staff for all their work setting up the Basilica for Christmas. I also want to thank our sacristans, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Music ministries, Ushers, and Altar Servers for their dedicated service in this Christmas Season. I am also grateful to all those of our parish family who took time to volunteer to decorate the Basilica so beautifully for Christmas. My thanks to one and all!
This year, in the church calendar, the Christmas Season extends to the Feast of the Epiphany on Sunday, January 8. (Actually, it extends one day beyond that – to January 9 – the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord). In that time between Christmas and the Lord’s Baptism, we will celebrate some very important feast days. This year, the Feast of the Holy Family will be celebrated on Friday, December 30, then on New Year’s Day, we will celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, and then, on Sunday, January 8, the Feast of the Epiphany, or the Three Kings.
So often, just as soon as Christmas Day is over, we pack Christmas away until next year. When we do this, we cut short the Christmas Season, and, more importantly, we cut short the spirit of Christmas. Try to keep the spirit of the feast in your heart and in your home right up to the Epiphany.
In the spirit of the Christmas holy day, the rectory will be closed on Monday, December 26. It will re-open on Tuesday, December 27, at 8:30 a.m.
Next weekend, New Year’s Day weekend, Masses will be at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, and at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and Noon on Sunday. (Please note that there will be no 4:30 p.m. Mass on Sunday).
May Jesus, our new-born Savior, bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.
Father Paul
SUNDAY 12/25/16 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 1
Pray for the canonization of our founder, Venerable Nelson Baker
Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.
Tours:
To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.
Summary of the Readings The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas)
On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God’s Word. Because it is creative, God’s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God’s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God’s Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God.
At the heart of God’s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning.
Once accepted and opened, the gift of God’s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift-giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Vocation Thought The Nativity of the Lord
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, as members of the Holy Family, always supported each other in doing God’s will, even though this was not always easy and meant letting go and trusting God. As the family of God’s children, we are to help each other in doing God’s will, which may be a vocation to priesthoos or religious life. Let us not stand in the way of those whom God has called. If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the Month” stories on our website at www.buffalovocations.org!
