Confession is, in itself, notdifficult, but it does requireprepara[on. Weneed tobeginwithprayer, placingourselves in thepresenceofour lovingGod. RiteofReconciliaQon IknowthatsomepeoplehavenotcelebratedtheSacrament,becausethey’renotsure“How,tocelebrate.” Thefollowingisasimpleguidethatcanbeusedtohelpyouincelebra[ngtheSacrament:• Reconcilia[onmay be face-to-face or anonymous,with a screen between you and the priest. Choose the op[on that is themostcomfortableforyou.
• The celebra[onbeginwith the Signof theCross and say: “Blessme father, for I have sinned. My last confessionwas…” (give thenumberofweeks,monthsoryears).
• Then,simplystatethatwhichyouwouldliketoaskGodforforgivenessfor…Confessallofyoursinstothepriest. Thepriestwillhelpyou if youareanxiousorafraid. I aUended the NaFonal Conference of Catholic YouthMinistersthispastweekend.IlearnedsomenewideasthatIlookforwardtosharingandwasrenewedwithevenmoreenthusiasmfor this ministry. Chris Stefanick, who wrote the confirma[onprogram that we are using here at OLV, was a keynote andinspiring speaker. He spokeofkerygma, themessageof us thebelievers. If someone asked what themeaning of our faith is,whatwould you say? Kerygma is a shortmission statement orexplana[onofthefaith.Hopefully,itboilsdowntounderstandingthatGodisLove. RCIA News On Sunday, November 20, during the Solemnity of Christ the King at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, we had the privilege of celebrating the Rite of Acceptance for catechumens and the Rite of Welcome for candidates. We have been meeting weekly to break open the Sunday Gospel reading, for prayer and for a topic that pertains to our Catholic faith. This year, we have eight people who are part of the RCIA process. The Rite of Acceptance and the Rite of Welcome is the Church’s first official acceptance of these adults into the RCIA process. The congregation, along with each of their sponsors was asked to acknowledge their support for them as they continue their preparation. By giving our support, we promise to pray for and with all those involved in the RCIA journey.

2017 Offertory Envelopes Note the CHANGE!
In the next week, the 2017 Sunday Offertory Envelopes will be mailed out to all parishioners who are not part of OLV’s eGiving program. Please note that there has been a change this year. We are now using a new envelope program through Our Sunday Visitor of Huntington, Indiana. With this new program you will begin receiving your envelopes bi-monthly, rather than once a year. Please know that your parishioner envelope number will remain the same. This new system will enable our office to better address necessary corrections, new parishioner start-up, and communication with our Parish database. Please make sure to look through the entire packet each month. As always, envelopes have not been printed for parishioners who are enrolled in OLV’s eGiving program.

Depression is a common but serious mood disorder.Men, women, and teens get depression, but experience itdifferently.Itisareal,treatablebrainillnessorhealthproblem.Men:Maybemore likely to feel very[redand irritable, and loseinterestintheirwork,familyorhobbies. Theymaybemorelikelytohavedifficultysleepingthanwomenwithdepression. AlthoughwomenwithdepressionaremorelikelytoaUemptsuicide,menaremorelikelytodiebysuicide.• Many men do not recognize, acknowledge or seek help for
their depression. They may be reluctant to talk about howtheyarefeeling.
Women: Can feel very [red, helpless and hopeless. Theyexperience being sadmost of the [me and taking no pleasure infamily, friends or hobbies. Symptoms may interfere with awoman’sabilitytowork,sleep,study,eatandenjoylife.• Women with symptoms of depression that began during
pregnancy or in the month afer giving birth are known tohavepostpartumdepression.Womenwhohavehadepisodesofdepressionbefore theybecamepregnantareat increasedriskofpostpartumdepression.
Teens: Grades may drop; teens may experience more intensefeelingsofsadness,hopelessnessandangerorfrustra[onthatlastsfor weeks, months or longer. These feelings make it hard topar[cipateinusualac[vi[es.TheymayhavedifficultyfocusingandfeelingliketheyhaveliUleornomo[va[onorenergy. Theydon’tfeel likeseeingtheirbestfriendsandmake ithardtoenjoy lifeorgetthroughtheday.
Signs and Symptoms of depression: Not everyone experienceseverysymptom.• Persistent sad, “empty” mood; feeling hopeless, irritable,
anxious,orangry.• Lossofinterestinwork,family,oronce-pleasurableac[vi[es.• Feelingvery[red,decreasedenergyorfa[gue.• Notbeingabletosleep,orsleepingtoomuch,early-morning
awakening.• Notbeingabletoconcentrateorrememberdetails.• Appe[teand/orweightchanges.• Aches or pains, headaches, cramps or a diges[ve problem
withoutaclearphysicalcauseand/orthatdoesnoteasewithtreatment.
Causes: Different kinds of factors play a role in the risk ofdepression.Ittendstoruninfamilies.Somegenesincreasetheriskof depression. Others increase resilience--the ability to recoverfromhardship. Some stresses or lossesmay trigger depression inonepersonandnotanother.Teenhormonescanfluctuatecausingmoodinessorcryingaboutthesmallestthing. Itcanbecausedbybigtransi[onsinlife.Treatment: Depression, even the most severe cases, can betreated.Theearliertreatmentbegins—themoreeffec[veitis.Thefirststeptogevngtherighttreatmentistovisitadoctorormentalhealth professional. The doctor may be able to rule out othercondi[onsthatmayhavethesamesymptomsasdepression.• Talk therapy with a licensed social worker, psychiatrist,
psychologist or counselor can help understand and managefeelingsandemo[ons.
• Medicines: The doctor may prescribe an[depressantsdependingonsymptoms.Thereareafewan[depressantsthathavebeenwidelystudiedandproventohelpteens.

As we enter the third week of Advent, we become more keenly aware of the excitement but also the angst of the upcoming feast! It is then a good time to step back and take stock of your relationship with others and most importantly with our Lord.
The holidays always manage to bring up in families, past hurts and grudges that perhaps, have not been given to our Lord. As we hang on to those feelings and emotions, we have to recognize that they do impact our current behavior and can be
the cause of sin. That is why our parish offers to each of us this weekend (Sunday, December
11) the opportunity to confess our sins, admit our weaknesses and with God’s wonderful love and mercy, move on. As a communal celebration the rite gives to families a chance to pray together before God, hear his Word and through Father Denis’ homily learn how that Word offers a new day for each of us. We will then reflect upon an Examination of Conscience which will aide in identifying how we do sin against ourselves and each other followed by the Act of Contrition which expresses our sorrow while looking to God and trusting in his forgiveness and the opportunity with God’s help to sin no more. Families will then be invited to approach a priest individually, express your sin or as Father Denis tells the children, “Tell God what is in your heart,” be given a penance and receive absolution (blessing or prayer of God’s forgiveness)
By giving to God those things that hold our hearts hostage we are able to make room for the love and joy of Christmas. Below are thoughts from some of our second graders in the school who received the sacrament for the first time as to the effect of the Sacrament:
“At first I was nervous but then when I was done I felt peaceful, joyful and just so happy that my sins were gone.” -Danny“I met with my priest and I felt peace when I was blessed by God. I didn’t feel nervous when driving to the church.” -Emmett “I knew I was still loved by God and I was super happy.” -Max “I felt happy to speak with a priest and I said my brother apologizes to me and I say to him I forgive you. Then I felt peaceful.” -Cameron
As we always say, sometimes the children can lead us. Perhaps, the wisdom of the child can help parents to move past their own hesitation to see this as a life giving family Advent activity! Come and feel the true peace of Advent and let that become the path to Christmas!

Christian Stewardship Last month, the Department of Development and
Stewardship distributed “Stewardship Thoughts,” weekly reflections for the readings in the Sunday Liturgy of the Word in Cycle A, for parishes to include in their bulletins. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal help the Archdiocese of Detroit provide materials as well as guidance on Christian stewardship education. The Stewardship Thoughts are an addition to the department’s award-winning stewardship education manual, Called by Christ, Gifted by the Spirit. They are designed to encourage reflection on the grace God gives to each of us through His gifts of time, talent, and treasure, and how we are to “steward” those gifts to serve Him in advancing His kingdom on earth. Stewardship Thoughts are also posted to the Catholic Services Appeal’s Facebook and Twitter accounts each Friday morning. CHOIR NOTES “Gaudete!AgainIsayrejoice!” ThisSunday is known as Gaudete Sunday. For thepast twoSundays, the cantorshave been singing an introit/entrancepsalmbeforemassbegan. OntheThirdSunday of Advent the Introit begins“Gaudete in Domino semper, iterum
dico gaudete.” Rejoice in the Lord always, again I sayrejoice. For this reason the Third Sunday is named.Advent is half over and we are joyful because Jesus isnear. Also it is theSundaywhen thepriestanddeaconmaywear rose colored vestments andwe light thepinkcandleintheAdventwreath. Our Communion hymn changes this week to“My Soul in S[llness Waits” which is based on the “OAn[phons” that begins on December 17. It has beensung since the 8th century at Evening Prayer. Theyexpress the deep longing and hope of the Israelites forthecomingoftheMessiah.

Santa Shop Fun
Once again, the PTO recreated Victory Hall into a Winter Wonderland of shopping! The students were able to shop with their classmates for Christmas presents of all shapes and sizes. Once all the names were crossed off their list, they enjoyed a fresh baked cookie and watched “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” while Santa Helpers were quickly wrapping their gifts!
