Dear Parishioners, This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. For many it marks the end of the Christmas season, although in certain parts of Europe the tradition is to keep the crib up until Candlemas Day, which is February 2nd. The Nativity Story is in many ways a story of migration. Mary and Joseph leave their home in Nazareth to travel to Bethlehem. The Magi travel from the East to see the child. Mary and Joseph flee to
Egypt, a foreign country, to escape violence in Bethlehem. In this, they are like migrants throughout history, including many of our ancestors. This is National Migration week and Cardinal Cupich is celebrating a special Mass for migrants this Sunday at 5:15 P.M. at Holy Name Cathedral. The theme is “many journeys, one family.” Moreover, it echoes the call of Pope Francis to accompany and support our migrant brothers and sisters through these challenging times. In this world, we have forty mil-lion refugees (a number higher than after World War II) who have fled violence. We have people immigrating throughout the world. Some are fleeing violence or deep poverty. Others are seeking a better life. We all read of the challenges that migrants face and the struggles that many have. The Catholic Church, being faithful to the Gospel imperative to welcome the stranger, supports immigration reform that assists in keeping families intact, has compassion for the displaced, and addresses the needs of border security. The issues are complex but ultimately we must begin by seeing the human dignity of every person. New Years is a time of resolutions. As the Christmas season ends, it would be wonderful if we could strive this New Year to deepen that truth of the Lord’s presence and invitation. If we all did, we would make an extra effort to be present before Mass starts in order to prepare well. If we all did, we would listen more attentively and respond more fervently. If we did, we would take time after Communion to pray and give thanks and not rush out. We would savor the gift we have been given. I have a friend of mine who is an Episcopalian priest. He invited me to his Sunday liturgy and I was struck by the fact that almost everyone was there before the worship began and everyone stayed until the procession was over. Of course, there are always times when we run late (especially with children) and there are occasions when some-one must leave early (such as to get home to care for someone ill). However, it seems to me that if we shift from seeing Mass as being simply an obligation fulfilled to understanding that it is a privilege we must cherish, then a great deal would change. If we tried to teach our children more clearly that they are in the presence of the One who loves them and wants to nourish them then that also would make a difference. The Novena to our Lady of Sorrows will resume of Tuesday, January 16th after the 8:30 Mass. Religious Education classes also begin this week. In Christ,
Father Mike

Ministry of Care is an outreach service of Our La-
dy of the Woods Parish to those who are unable to
attend mass due to sickness or age. Ministers of
Care are parishioners who are commissioned by
Our Lady of the Woods and have completed and
extensive training program from the Archdiocese of
Chicago.
Our Ministers of Care have been trained to properly
administer the Holy Eucharist to those who cannot
come to church. Each minister offers compassion,
prayer and Holy Communion to those who are sick
or homebound. They also bring the Eucharist to
Catholic patients in healthcare facilities such as Pa-
los Community Hospital, Advocate Christ Hospital,
Peace Village, Circle Inn, Sunrise Assisted Living
Residence as well as homebound parishioners.
If you have someone who is homebound or at one of
the mentioned facilities that would like to receive
communion at please contact Michelle Hilliard at the
parish office. We will gladly have someone minister
to your loved one.

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests know to God. Philippians 4:6 Prayer is powerful. As Christians, we do not equate prayer with magic but with an outward and inward expression of faith. Prayer is a means of opening our-selves to God’s voice and opening our hearts to the presences of Christ in one another. We use prayer to focus our minds, to nourish our spirits, to surrender to God our doubts, fears, grief, struggles, contrition and pain that they may be transformed into hope, joy, courage, forgiveness, comfort and peace. Prayer is personal and communal. “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (Matthew 18:20) By remembering one another in prayer we grow closer as a community of faith, rooted in unconditional love. If you are asked to pray for someone, take a moment and say a prayer. If you would like the parish to pray for a loved one please contact the parish office. Out of respect for the privacy of our parishioners, prayer requests to be shared at Sunday mass, must come from a family member of the one seeking prayers.
