$192,349 in pledges to date and over half of that has already been fulfilled. For those who have already contributed, thank you. T , . The work will take place in two phases: 1) The immediate church area and then 2) the rear parking lot when we raise

the rest of the funds. This is an exci ng project that will greatly enhance our parish grounds in appearance and, more importantly, in safety. The work on the parking lot, delayed because of weather, will begin soon. Work on the curbing around the church will be the first stage of the work. Lutz Brothers Paving of Li le Ferry, who will do the work, was here on Monday of last week to make preliminary prepara ons for work on the curbing.

W B D T L F H A W R . We are moving ahead with these

projects and I thank you for your support. Our goal of $250,000 is ambi ous but we are well on our way to mee ng and surpassing that goal! Please be a part of this campaign in order to provide a solid founda on for our parish’s financial future. Anyone who contributes any amount during this phase of the campaign will be able to designate an inscribed brick for our Walkway of Remembrance. I believe that the Memorial will expand over me and serve as a tribute to loved ones and most of all become a sign of our gra tude to God for the gi of Angels who guide us. When the campaign concludes, each brick will require an $800.00 contribu on that may be sa sfied over eight months. Please consider being a part of this important campaign now. So many of our parish family have become a part of this ambi ous project and I ask you to become involved as well.

D B T C S ’ . There was addi onal flood damage to the church hall and rectory

basement. No sump pump could keep up with two months’ worth of rain falling in a few hours. I deeply apologize to anyone whose car was damaged in Saturday’s flash flood. I regret deeply the loss of property and the stress that it caused. In ten years here, I have never seen the parking lot flood that quickly or to that extent. I again apologize for the hardship and stress caused. Thankfully, no one was hurt and that is a grace for which we are all grateful.

I . Around the same me as the emergency repairs on the school building three years ago, I had hoped to be able to repair our parking lot. Regre ably, the cost of the es mates I obtained in 2015 has risen between 10%-15%. It will never get any cheaper to repair the parking lot – the cost, now, is well over $225,000.

There was a minor repair made to the parking lot for around $6,000 two years ago to address the most damaged part. I am embarrassed to tell you that was a bad decision on my part. T . The area near the elevator and the chapel now becomes like a lake when it rains and floods in the winter and freezes over. It is not safe.

But as vital as safety is, as essen al as the Banyan School and the rental of our property is to our future, that first impression that is made when people come to our parish is not incidental. Repairing a parking lot isn’t simply a construc on issue. I , .

A parking lot that has holes, cracks and is unsafe does not present a welcoming message to parishioners and visitors alike. We want and need our facili es to be an expression of happiness and joy and welcome to that family new to the neighborhood who is looking for a Church to join. B ,

C . W . Now, we need to address that final exterior piece – our parking lot.

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

With your help, the first impression that everyone will get the moment they pull into our Church grounds is that Our Lady of the Holy Angels is a thriving, ac ve and welcoming Catholic faith community and the jewel of Li le Falls and star of faith in the Diocese of Paterson that we know it is.

You will recall that when we prepared to renovate the church it was said, “It will never work.” You will remember that before we built the elevator, it was said, “Impossible.” Look around at this building. Look at that elevator – how many would find it impossible to get into this church building without it. You made it happen. We will meet this challenge as well.

I have no doubt that we will make this happen. No one can do everything but everyone can do something. I $1,200 – $200.00 . T

. I . I . B .

Every household that makes an investment in this campaign has the opportunity to have a brick engraved with their name, or in memory of a departed loved one, and placed at The Holy Angels Walkway of Remembrance that will be placed near our bell tower – which is, by the way, the Na onal Shrine of Our Lady of the Highway. Each brick is a symbol of our faith and the reality that we all form this community with the strength of our faith built on the founda on stone of Christ.

I . T ,

, H A W R . Each household that makes a pledge or a contribu on to the campaign will be able to designate a commemora ve brick or memorial brick to be inscribed with their name or the names of departed loved ones. Addi onal bricks may be reserved at $200.00 each. Please take advantage of this opportunity to become part of the permanent history of Our Lady of the Holy Angels Parish.

Please know how grateful I am to you for your support and investment in our future. N , . Most of all, I ask for your prayers for the success of this project and for the security of our future. A

, , , , , .

God bless you. Please know of my remembrance of you each me I stand at the altar.

I . . .

A visitor to our parish recently observed to me as I stood at the door of the church to greet people following Mass: “I have never seen so many people leave Mass early.” I had to agree. Over the me that I have been privileged to serve as pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Angels I have o en wondered why people do, in fact, leave Mass so early. At first I thought that it was because of our horrendous parking situa on. But that can’t be the reason. Even when the parking lot is half-full people leave Mass before it is through – some mes even walking past the celebrant to get to the door. On various occasions I have gingerly and with as much tact as possible asked, “Is it possible to wait un l the Mass is concluded before you leave?” The answer, invariably, “God doesn’t care – it is only important that I am here.” The response is absolutely correct insofar as it goes. But our presence at Mass is not only a ma er of showing respect for God – although, of course, our worship of Almighty God is what is most important – it is also a ma er of showing respect for one another.

Of course, there will be mes when a person is pressed for me, or doesn’t feel well, or just wants to move on with the day quickly and feels that they must leave Mass before it is concluded. I understand that and, frankly, during my various s nts as a student or when on vaca on, I have occasionally bolted to the door before the conclusion of the final hymn. But I ask you to ask yourself, is there something really so important that I must leave Mass early every week? If the answer is “yes” well then the ma er is se led. If the answer is “some mes” – that would seem to provide for an occasional early exit, but if the answer is “no” – then it might be an exercise in self-discipline to remain following Holy Communion to offer thanksgiving for the gi of the Body and Blood of the Lord that we have received in the company of others also grateful for the gi of the Eucharist.

We don’t receive Holy Communion as individuals alone – we receive the Body and Blood of the Lord in common and are built up into the Body of Christ through receiving the Eucharis c Lord – together. A moment spent in prayer following Holy Communion is an encouragement to our brothers and sisters who need the witness of our faith in order to remain faithful of the call to follow the Lord. In our fast paced society an extra moment or two in prayer can help to make us more focused on what is really important in the week ahead. Addi onally, our culture really seems to need, at least in my opinion, more emphasis on mutual respect and what my grandmother, and probably yours, called “good manners.” In the ever increasing coarsening of

language and culture in all forms of media it is healthy and humanizing to keep places like church sacred not only because they pertain to the things of God but because they remind us that we are all made in God’s image and so we are each deserving of the respect and the dignity that comes from that truth. I am always grateful to see anyone who comes to Mass – whether early or late – or even on the fly following Mass – and I would be even happier if I didn’t see you as a blur running down the stairs. Do we always need to be in such a hurry?

T S O T “I ”

We con nue our reflec on on the sixth chapter of Saint John’s gospel on this Twen eth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The mystery of the Eucharist cannot be exhausted and with each passing week of summer, John gives us more to reflect on in regard to the Eucharist. John is not simply providing us with a theological trea se on the Eucharist, although he is doing that, he is emphasizing that the Lord Jesus makes us part of his flesh and blood, his divine life, through the gi of the Eucharist.

Jesus iden fies himself with the living bread that comes down from heaven and provides more than physical life; the bread that he gives to those who believe in him will give them eternal life. Jesus addresses the crowds who seem to hang on his every word and who want to receive that “something more” that the Lord Jesus offers: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world” (John 6:51). Sent by the Father, Jesus brings life to his disciples not by simply being a great teacher or a mighty prophet, or a charisma c figure. No. Jesus brings life, eternal life, to his disciples because he is the Son of God who is able to incorporate all of those who believe in him into divine life itself.

The believer becomes one with him, becomes part of his flesh and blood, by ea ng and drinking his flesh and blood. The Eucharist is not just a symbol or a reenactment of the Last Supper, or just a ritual carried out with me culous care that somehow raises our hearts and minds to God. The Eucharist makes us one with the Lord Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we come into the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and we become part of the Lord Jesus himself through ea ng and drinking his Body and Blood. The Eucharist is vital to our faith. Without the Eucharist there would be no Church.

The Eucharist makes us who we are and the Eucharist is our promise of eternal life, real and tangible, that we celebrate day a er day. Jesus says to the crowds: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink” (6:52-55). That is the heart of what we believe that the Eucharist accomplishes in us: receiving the Body and Blood of Christ we become part of divine life and we are thus assured of eternal life.

We have just celebrated the Solemnity of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, the feast that an cipates the future that we can all expect – living in the presence of God in body and soul.

As we celebrate this and every Eucharist we pray for a greater awareness of the gi that the Eucharist is to us. The Eucharist gives us the gi of God’s own life through the Body and Blood of Christ and promises us the gi of eternal life that the Lord Jesus Christ won for us through the power of his cross and resurrec on. We pray for the grace, having been strengthened by the Eucharist, to be bread for others so that we may be Christ’s presence in the world and be a source of forgiveness, reconcilia on, and compassion for others.

R S E M 6:30 E S M 7:00 S

I am hesitant to mul ply Masses simply for the sake of having more Masses. However, as pastor, I do want to make the availability of the celebra on of the Eucharist for as many as possible. Therefore, beginning this week, the Spanish Mass will be celebrated on Saturday evenings at 7:00 and Mass in English will return next Sunday, August 26th. Thank you for your pa ence with this change to our Mass schedule.

If you have not already done so, please register your sons and daughters for our Fall Faith Forma on Programs. Registra on packets are available at the parish office. In order to adequately plan and prepare for our Fall Programs, it is very important that all students are registered as soon as possible. Thank you for giving us the privilege in assis ng you in handing on the faith to your children.

One of the most vital ministries in our parish, or any parish, is that of catechist. In order for our faith forma on program to work we are in need of catechists to help us in this vital work of handing on the faith to the young people of our parish. We are in need of more catechists so that our faith forma on program con nues to be effec ve. Please think about serving as a catechist. You don’t need to be an expert teacher; all that you need is a love for the faith and the Lord. Please contact Ms. Trish Filiaci if you would be able to give the gi of your service to the young people of our parish in this important ministry. If you are able to serve as a catechist please know that you will be given assistance to help in this work and that there are many to guide you along the way. Thank you for your willingness to be open to this invita on to take part in such an important work of our parish. Thank you!

Many Catholics never completed the process of their full ini a on into the Church by receiving the Sacrament of Confirma on. If you are an adult bap zed Catholic and have not been confirmed but would like to be, please contact me at the parish office or via e-mail and we can talk about the program that will begin in the fall that will lead to receiving the gi s of the Holy Spirit in Confirma on at Easter.

Thank you for your never failing generosity in support of our parish. Please remember that during the summer months we s ll con nue to rely on your support to meet our budget for the fiscal year. You are so generous but the decrease in summer collec ons takes a heavy toll. We are just three weeks into the new fiscal year and already almost ten thousand dollars short in what is budgeted. Please don’t forget your parish! Thank you and God bless you for your generosity.

Faith Formation Corner We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.

HELP THE HOMELESS His sandals were what drew us to him. “A nun gave them to me,” he told us. His feet looked as if he’d walked a thousand miles. His socks were so tattered and torn

that all his toes were exposed. And then it hit us. It was Him. Christ among us. Mychal’s Message is accepting donations in its 17th annual distribution of new underwear and socks to the homeless. A donation of $9.11 will provide a package of “Blessed Bloomers” to a homeless man or woman living on the street. Tax-deductible donations can be mailed to Mychal’s Message, P.O. Box 6404, Lancaster PA 17607, made online at www.mychalsmessage.org or via Facebook (Mychal’s Message). “Blessed Bloomers” will be given away beginning September 11 (in honor of the anniversary of 9/11) and continue through Christmas. For more information, contact Agnes Czaplinski 973-942-7167.
