“We need heroic Catholicism. We must stop talking, and start walking…stop crying, and start
sweating…stop defining ourselves by our sins, and start realizing we are Saints in the making! Everything we need to accomplish this mission is in the church… but the Catholic Church is a sleeping giant. It is time we wake the sleeping giant!” - John Wood (Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Mission)

- Hackneyed as this word may be, it is the best term to describe Dr. John Wood’s presentation during our parish Lenten Mission last Saturday. And I’m sure the other 270-some people in attendance would agree with me because they stayed for the entire 4 hour experience! I guess you could also use the word INSPIRING! Dr. Wood, a 38 year old husband and father of 4 gave a wonderful witness of faith in a very simple, down-to-earth manner. He is a man of passion for the Lord who desires to kindle the flame of the Holy Spirit in others: to help Catholics be in the mission of becoming saints! Being revived….resurrection…the theme of this Sunday’s readings; very appropriate. In his talk, which was motivational to say the least, Dr. Wood did bring some daunting and alarming statistics to light. One of the most shocking was that 80% of Young people who receive the Sacrament of Confirmation will stop practicing the faith within 10 years! Think of it; after being “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit” the flame of faith is diminished. Why? Dr. Wood gave several reasons: they don’t know the story of our faith (i.e. The Bible), the witness of older Catholics (that’s most of us) is passionless and sometimes hypocritical, or the pressures of society entice them to find “happiness” in other areas. Well the Catholic Church is doing something about it. We are aware of the challenge and have been responding. Every diocese encourages parishes to develop a youth ministry. In our parish we have been trying to form (and re-form) the youth ministry. Often the struggle is with competing activities (sports, dance class, etc…) but there is also a difficulty in finding adult volunteers. So I encourage you to contact Nancy Riddell who directs our Religious Education and Youth Ministry if you feel the Holy Spirit nudging you to get involved. On a global level, the Catholic Church has been reaching out to our youth. Pope St. John Paul II began World Youth Day – an event that brings young people from around the world together every 3 years. The most recent WYD was last summer in Poland and the next will be in Panama. And Pope Francis has declared the next Synod of Bishops to focus on youth. With the theme “Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment,” this conference will be held in October of 2018 and is an “expression of the Church’s pastoral concern for the young.” And the Holy Father wants to hear from the young people! As with the last Synod, each Diocese is to collect input from parishioners. For this upcoming Synod on Youth, we are asking those between the !" to take an online survey. Please visit www.camdendiocese.org/synod-2018/. There you will find two surveys, one for those 13-18 and the other for those 18-39. I also encourage parents and grandparents to share this information with family members and spur them on to take the survey. The world is drawing our youth people away from true fulfillment, joy and peace and leading them down a road of despair and hopelessness. Help make a difference! Become an Informed Disciple – a passionate Catholic who desires to be a saint! And let our young people know that they have a voice, and the Church wants to hear them!

Dear Friends,
On March 1, 2017, I formally notified Father Nick and the Superintendent of Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Camden of my intention to retire as Principal at the end of this school year.
The 26 years that I have spent as teacher, vice principal and principal of this school have been amazing. I truly believe that we have established a strong and vibrant educational environment and a building steeped in Catholic values.
I thank all of you for your support over the years and I pray that God continues to bless our school.
God bless you,
