In the 1990s, the celebration of Ascension was moved to the following Sunday to enable more people to participate and to allow a more solemn celebration of Our Lord’s Ascension. The Ascension of our Lord was such a milestone in the life of the early church. The Apostles creed affirms the Ascension of Our Lord, “He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.” The mystery of the Ascension proclaims some powerful truths. First, the Ascension is about Jesus returning into the Father’s glory. He is gone from the Apostles' sight but not from their life or ours. He is no longer bound to any one language. Anyone can speak to Him in his own language. He is not owned by any one culture. He can be part of all cultures. As the Letter to the Ephesians says, “…[He] fills all things in every way.” The Ascension means that Jesus is the universal Lord and Lord of all nations. Every part of this world comes within His redeeming, healing embrace. Second, the Ascension is not just about Jesus’ absence but about a different kind of presence. Jesus leaves in a dramatic way enveloped by the cloud to emphasize that from now on He will be with us in a new kind of way, not visually but in His spiritual and sacramental presence. Our experience of Christ is not like that of the disciples who saw Him, touched Him, and ate with Him. Our experience of the Risen Lord is through faith, the sacraments, prayer, and the life of the Church. He is with us with the same redeeming power and cleansing love as He was with the Apostles but in a different way. People will now encounter Jesus through the life of the Church. Third, the Ascension is not only about Jesus but also about us. Where Jesus is now, we hope someday to be. “I am going to prepare a place for you,” says the Lord. Although the life journey for each of us is different, our destination is the same, a union with the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. For some people that journey may be short or long, difficult or demanding with challenges and sufferings. But we should be united, knowing that we are all striving to arrive at the same destination. Our life here on earth does not fully define who we truly are. We have an immense and unimaginable glory ahead of us, to be where our Lord is. Where He is now, we hope to be someday. The Ascension is not about His absence but about the new spiritual presence of Jesus Christ to all of us, wherever we are or in whatever situation we are in. He is as close to us as the beating of our heart. And even in the midst of this pandemic, with all the chaos it brings to our physical and spiritual life, our faith like that of our ancestors, tells us that Christ, the Redeemer of the world, is as close to us as the beating of our heart. Nothing "will be able separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus." His Ascension promise: "And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

The Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord traditionally falls on a Thursday, 40 days after Easter.

He is with us with the same

redeeming power and cleansing love as He was with the Apostles but in a different way.

Nothing "will be able separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus."

His Ascension promise: "And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

Spiritual Communion: As Vine and Branches

Fr. Rolly Astudillo

e are familiar with the comparison Jesus makes of himself as the real vine. The vine is an Old Testament image of Israel. In effect, the Lord declares Himself to be the real Israel.

The metaphor of vine and branches is an apt description of the intimate relationship between Jesus and his disciples and the apostles among themselves with Peter as their head. It can also be extended to the Church founded on the apostles who is considered as the bride of Christ, the bridegroom. The meaning can also be extended to Holy Mother Church under whom all Christ’s followers find shelter. And this has found greater implication during this pandemic when, as we stay home, we stay united with the Universal Church that finds her concrete expression in the local parish.

The life of the vine is the life of the branches. Jesus lives in his followers and his followers live in him. The domestic Church in the home lives in the Universal Church in the parish for Jesus lives in his branches and his branches live by the life Jesus gives. The vine bears fruits through its branches just as the Universal Church bears fruit in families and in individual members of the Church for the branches bear the fruit of the vine. The vine does not totally depend on any one branch that can be pruned without withering the vine just as the Church undergoes pruning by purification from the sins of its members, but the Church remains the holy bride of Christ.

Many have grown spiritually strong during this pandemic; some have grown complacent in their faith. For those who became complacent, they say: “God is everywhere so we don’t have to go to Church any longer”. They have distanced themselves from the vine. For those whose desire to be in sacramental communion with the Universal Church, they say: “Our personal life bears more fruit because of our spiritual communion with one another in worship, prayer, sacrifice and works of charity. We shall always continue to benefit from our spiritual relationship with the Church”.

It is in moments of crisis when the best comes out of many. Physically, the home and its surroundings are clean; corners never touched were reached into. There is fresher air to breathe and butterflies we’ve never seen before flying around us. Economically, we may be poorer this time but richer in spirit as there is always something to give to anyone who is in need. Socially, we miss each other and call each other more often now than before. Even school children in their homes long for their friends in school and keep in touch with each other as distance learning and house chores and games on their gadgets would permit. And in our moments of silence and prayer, we realize that there is so much to prune in us as we live in God’s vineyard, the Church.

As branches, our identity is not determined by socio-political or ethno-cultural affiliations. Our identity comes from our welcoming fidelity to and practice of the words of Jesus for these are what make us true branches of the true vine, and what makes us accomplish things with greater abundance.

Being united to Jesus, the Vine, we become united in the Spirit with the Father, the Vine-grower. Our prayers, our works, our thoughts, and the things we desire become united to prayers, works, thoughts and desires of Jesus, the Vine; and God is attentive to the vine and its branches.

There is always that danger to talk more about Jesus than to talk to him, to listen to others speak of Jesus without letting him speak to us about Himself. Our being Catholics, before being a religion, is, first of all, a relationship with Jesus. As a religion, our Catholic faith leads us to a relationship with Jesus and to live out the fruit of this relationship in our lives. It is only in this encounter with the Risen Christ do we really become Catholics, do we really become Christians.

Vine and Branches: Be true branches to the true Vine.

Our 100 Years History

Did you know?

Did you know that Mount Lukens is also known as Sister Elsie,

named for a kind and gentle Sister who visited here in the mid to late

1800’s. She taught the Paiute Indian children who once lived in the

Verdugo Hills. According to the legend she taught catechism and

supervised the care of cattle. She might have been a Sister of Charity

and the cattle would

have belonged to the

UPDATE REGARDING THE DISPENSATION FROM THE

SUNDAY OBLIGATION OF MASS FOR THE YEAR 2020

DURING THE TIME OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

(May 15, 2020)

Archbishop José H. Gomez dispenses all the Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and all Catholics currently in the Archdiocese from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass until further notice. Furthermore, the public celebration of Mass continues to be

suspended in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles until further notice.

In so doing, as mentioned before, please make note of the following:

• Priests are encouraged to continue celebrating Mass for their faithful, but it should take the form of a “Private Mass” (i.e. without a congregation) in their church or chapel and be livestreamed.

One or two ministers may assist the Priest.

• Priests are to encourage the Faithful to keep the Lord’s Day holy. Some ways to do this include: reading the Gospels, praying with your families, and to join yourself to the sacrifice of the Mass by

making an act of spiritual communion.

• The English Mass from the Cathedral is available on television KCOP Ch. 13 on Sunday at 10:00 AM. The Spanish Mass from the Cathedral is available on television UniMás Ch. 46 on Monday

to Friday and Sunday at 7:00 AM.

• For more information on additional Mass broadcasts on TV and

Readings for May 25 to May 31, 2020

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy

Sacrament of the altar. I love You above all things, and I

desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this

moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually

into my heart. I embrace You as if You were

already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen

In this time of trial due to the Corona virus outbreak, Archbishop Gomez invites us to join him in praying the prayer below, entrusting us all to the maternal care and intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Basic do’s and don’ts for wearing cloth

non-medical face coverings (masks)

❌ DON’T: Wear the mask below your nose. ❌ DON’T: Leave your chin exposed. ❌ DON’T: Wear your mask loosely with gaps on the sides. ❌ DON’T: Wear your mask so it covers just the tip of your nose. ❌ DON’T: Push your mask under your chin to rest on your neck. ❌ DON’T: Remove your mask while working or doing essential errands ✔️ DO: Wear your mask so it comes all the way up, close to the bridge of your nose, and all the way down under your chin. Do your best to tighten the loops or ties so it’s snug around your face, without gaps. And once you’ve figured out the correct position for wearing your mask, follow these tips to stay safe: ■ Always wash your hands before and after wearing a mask. ■ Use the ties or loops to put your mask on and pull it off. ■ Don’t touch the front of the mask when you take it off. ■ Hand wash and lay your cloth mask to dry daily and keep it in a clean, dry place.

Don’t have a false sense of security. Masks offer limited protection, and work better when combined

with hand washing and social distancing.
