‘Jesus models servanthood to His followers’

John13:1-17

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many

Mark 10:45

‘Jesus models servanthood to His followers’

His time had come

It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him

to leave this world and go to the Father

John 13:1a

Jesus knew …

Judas would betray Him

… the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,

to betray Jesus

John 13:2b

Jesus knew …

He was secure in His relationship with Father

Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had

come from God and was returning to God

John 13:3

Jesus knew …

I have set you an example that you should do

as I have done for you

John 13:15

Follow the Leader’s example

so He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel round His waist. After that, He poured water into

a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was

wrapped round Him

John 13:4-5

Follow the Leader’s example

‘No … you shall never wash my feet’

John 13:8

Be prepared to receive as well as give

Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them

John 13:17

Find the appropriate way to serve others

“Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to

have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject

and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated

by love”

Martin Luther King Jr.

I dream of a SERVING church where:-

the members serve one another the practical resources of the fellowship are shared

our love for one another spills out to the world outside members are involved in the community

those involved in the community are supported by others the needs of the 'weak' receive priority

God's love is seen in deed as well as in word

Paul Beaseley-Murray in ‘Dynamic Leadership’

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,

especially to those who belong to the family of believers

Gal 6:10
