ADMINSTRATOR’S MESSAGE
The end of October completed a busy month with our Halloween Dance-a-Thon Fundraiser taking
place and many ongoing activities including, Volleyball, Cross Country and more.
November will be no less busy. Progress Reports will be going home and our Parent-Teacher-Student Interview Evening is coming up. Our Remembrance Day ceremony will take place on November 9 at 10:30 am. As Canadians, we pause in memory of the thousands of men and
women who sacrificed their lives in military service. The poppy symbolizes our remembrance.
Why the poppy? The association between the poppy and war dates back to the Napoleonic wars, when a writer saw a field of poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers. During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Canadian Lt.-Col. John McCrae was inspired to write the poem ‘In Flanders
Fields’ on sighting the poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle.
The poem was a great inspiration in adopting the poppy as the Flower of Remembrance in Canada, France, the U.S, Britain and Commonwealth countries. The first poppies were distributed in Canada in 1921. Today the volunteer donations from the distribution of millions of poppies is an important source of revenue for the Royal Canadian Legion that goes toward helping ex-
servicemen and women buy food, and obtain shelter and medical attention.
Canada is the greatest country in the world and we thank the many veterans who sacrificed so
much for us.
A PRAYER FOR PEACE Lord Jesus, You said to Your disciples,
“Blessed are the Peace Makers,
for they will be called Children of God.”
You know how much the world needs Your peace
Yet in so many places in the world there is only war and conflict.
Lord, through the power of Your Holy Spirit,
Transform human hearts,
Give our world a desire for Peace,
And help us to do our part.
We pray in Your Holy name.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
Remembrance Day gives us an opportunity to pay respects to the more than 100,000 Canadians who have lost their lives in wars and peace keeping duties for Canada. On November 9 at 8:30 am , our school will honour those who have served and died in all wars and peace missions. A liturgical service will be held in the school gym at 10:45 a.m. Please join
us.

ALL SAINTS’ AND ALL SOULS’ DAY
While the secular world moves towards the celebration of the Christmas season at this time of year, we are reminded as Catholics of the importance of the feast days of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day celebrated in
the Roman Rite.
All Saints’ Day, celebrated on November 1, reminds our community of all who have lived faithful lives in the Church. This day is a part of the liturgical calendar of events, and we remember our Saints in our prayers. The historical roots of this celebration have to do with those martyrs who died in the early Church. Later, Pope Gregory VII declared this day to be the date we
remember all who have lived and died for their faith.
On All Souls’ Day, November 2, our faith remembers all who have died and we remember those with liturgies,
celebrations or prayers.
Both dates remind students of the depth of our faith and our participation in the Church. We are reminded of the importance of celebrating our faith, preparing for the end of the liturgical year and Advent and the beginning
of our new liturgical year.
CONSCIENCE: Virtue of the Month
During the month of November we will focus on the virtue
of Conscience.
God has given us the ability to know the right and decent way to act and then to act that way. We trust that the common Spirit we share inspires us and guides us to make good decisions if we allow our conscience to be well-formed. A person of conscience allows prayer and scripture to influence him/her. Makes decisions according to gospel values, and accepts accountability for ones own
actions.

FRENCH IMMERSION 2020-2021
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB) will hold a series of public information meetings in Mississauga and Brampton for parents and guardians interested in enrolling their children in the DPCDSB’s French Immersion Program for the 2020-
2021 school year.
The information sessions will provide parents and guardians with the following: an overview of our French Immersion Program, the criteria for admittance, information about the online application process, information about the random selection process (should the
number of applications exceed the number of spaces available)
The DPCDSB offers the French Immersion Program starting in Grade 1 at eight school sites. Students registered in this program will spend 90% of their day learning in the French language. All subjects and activities in the French Immersion classroom, except for Religion and Family Life, will be delivered in French. In Grades 2 and 3, 70% of the instruction will be in French, with the proportion of English increasing to 50% in later years. By the end of Grade 8, students will have received at least 4,510 hours of French instruction and will be able to participate adequately in conversation and have developed inter-cultural awareness of French-
speaking communities.
Information sessions will be held at: St. Angela Merici on Tuesday November 12, 2019 at 7:00 pm.

SIGNING IN AND OUT OF SCHOOL Students Must Sign In or Out when:
1. They are late arriving to school in the morning or
afternoon.
2. They are being picked up by parents/guardians for
appointments, etc.
If a student has a note signed and dated by their parent/guardian indicating the reason for their lateness or early dismissal, they should give it to their teacher to keep
on file.
No student is to be dismissed directly from their classroom by teachers or picked up at the classroom by parents/guardians, etc. ALL MUST COME TO THE OFFICE
AND SIGN IN OR OUT.
VISITORS IN THE SCHOOL
Parents are welcomed to the school throughout the year, however, for the safety of children, ALL parents and visitors must use only the front door for entry and must sign in at the office and receive a visitor’s sticker each and every time you visit the building. Visitors are not entitled to go to the classrooms as this is a disruption to student programming. Since the hallways are busy during pickup times, siblings and parents are asked to arrange with your child, a meeting spot OUTSIDE of the school. Messages and deliveries (keys, lunches, etc) are handled through the office. Please remember that to most students in the school,
you are a stranger.
Any student leaving the school during the day due to
appointments, etc., must be signed out at the office. Please
ensure that you send a note in this regard to your child’s
teacher.
VOLUNTEERS
We encourage parents to volunteer their time if possible at Our Lady of Lourdes School. We value your talents, experience, knowledge and skills. Hot lunches, special events, trips and the All Star Reading program are programs that require volunteers. All volunteers require a Criminal Reference Check (CRC). The paperwork may be requested at the school office and must be taken to the designated Peel Regional Police locations for processing. Once the volunteer and CRC forms are completed, return them to the school and you will be contacted shortly. Thank you in advance for considering this opportunity to assist our
students.
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
Now that the weather is colder, we respectfully remind you to ensure that your children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess.
When weather conditions are severe, we may reduce the outdoor playtime, or have indoor recess entirely. For health reasons and to help keep the school clean, we ask
all students to have indoor shoes.
WINTER TRANSPORTATION/SCHOOL CLOSURES
A decision to cancel school transportation, and/or to close schools due to inclement weather is usually made by 6:30 a.m. Bus or school cancellations during winter months are broadcast on various media outlets which include:
Please check the school board’s transportation website, www.stopr.ca for the most up to date information.
COLD AND FLU SEASSON

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
If a child is required to bring medication to school, procedures relative to the administration of medication
shall only be adopted:
when requested by the parents, when authorized by a physician and when medication must be provided
during school hours
If medication must be administered at school, signed request/authorization forms from the parents and the supervising physician must be obtained whenever a prescription is initiated or changed. Please do not send medication with your child to school without the proper
authorization.
These forms are available in the office. The required forms and the medication shall be delivered to the principal by the parent/guardian. Medication must not be kept in the child’s possession (i.e., pocket, back pack etc.) or in the classroom with the exception of epi-pens and inhalers but will be housed in the school office. If the child is keeping these items on them, they must be in a fanny
pack or a pouch on them at all times.

SNACKS AT SCHOOL
As part of our school effort and board policy to reduce the risk of life threatening allergies for our students and our commitment to keeping our schoolyard as clean as possible, we only allow students to eat their snacks indoors. Students are given time to eat their snacks just prior to or just following each recess. We ask that students and parents remember to include snacks that can
be eaten within a 10 minute time frame.
Medical Alert-Sabrina’s Law (Anaphylaxis)
If your child has a severe allergic reaction to peanuts, peanut by-products, bee/wasp stings etc., please let the school know as soon as possible. It is essential that the information you provide us with is accurate and up-to-date. There are various forms which need to be completed by you and your family doctor if it is
necessary to store an epipen/medication at school.
We continue to have students with severe, life threatening allergy to peanuts and nuts. This is a medical condition that causes severe reaction to certain allergens and can result in death within minutes. We have students in some classes who are severely allergic to nuts and other foods. A letter will be sent home to parents of students in the classes affected. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their by-products. Please respect the health and safety of our students by adhering
to the guidelines. Thank you for your support.
All food items will be eaten in classes only, students
are not allowed to bring any snacks outside for
recess. We cannot guarantee that any classroom is
nut free, but we are attempting to minimize the
exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as
possible.
Medical Alert-Ryan’s Law (Asthma)
As we begin a new school year, we would like to inform you that Our Lady of Lourdes continues to participate in ‘We Share the Air’, a Scent Sensitivity Awareness Campaign. There are students in attendance who suffer from life-threatening asthmatic conditions to air pollutants. Exposure even to minimal odours may cause
potential life-threatening reactions.
Very common severe chemical triggers are: perfume, cologne, scented products and personal care products (such as hairspray). These products may cause severe reactions for students. The safety and well-being of all of
our students is a priority.
In order to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, we request that our school community refrain from wearing scented personal products complying with our Scent Free Zone Campaign at school and all school events. Please ensure that all caregivers are also aware
of our awareness campaign.
If you have any questions, please talk to your child’s
teacher or the school staff.
We appreciate your cooperation in supporting a safe
learning environment for all students.
TREAT DAY
We will offer Terra Cotta nut-free cookies, baked chips and popcorn. The monies raised from the treat program will go towards extracurricular activities, classroom technological enhancements, school presentations, upkeep of the Peace Garden, take home books and school programs such as PALS. Ingredients for treats can be
found on our school website.
DELIVERING LUNCHES
When delivering your child’s lunch to school please advise your child in advance when you will be doing so, and write his/her name and teacher’s name on the bag. Your child can come down at 12:35 pm to pick it up from the lunch table with minimal disruption to the class. The lunch table is located in the hallway, just outside the office. We
would greatly appreciate your co-operation in this matter.
HOMEWORK TIP OF THE MONTH
Develop a positive attitude: It is important that family members come to an agreement on the positive value of homework. Gaining this consensus sets the stage for a successful learning environment within the home. Remember, the attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child
acquires.

November 2019
SAFETY DRILLS
Our Lady of Lourdes is required to conduct three fire drills in the fall and three in the spring. We will also be conducting two lockdown drills, one Hold and Secure drill and one Shelter in Place drill throughout the year. These drills are standard practice across the Board and ensure that in the event of a real emergency, our students and staff can respond quickly and appropriately. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these drills, please speak to your
child’s teacher or the main office.
EXCURSIONS & FIELD TRIPS & SPORTS TEAMS
Educational trips which extend learning opportunities in the curriculum areas do take place. Teachers need to follow appropriate Board procedures. A limited number of trips may be planned by teachers. BY LAW the school must have on file permission forms which must be signed by the parents/guardians. If on the day of the excursion your child did not return his/her form, and the parents/guardians cannot come into the school to sign the permission forms, the student will remain at the school. Verbal telephone permission is never acceptable. With regards to students athletes, students will be transported either by bus or board approved taxies (companies that have the proper liability coverage and criminal reference check) only. The only exception to this rule is if the parent of the student drops off and picks up their own child. In all three circumstances a Parental Permission to Transport Students in a Private/Commercial Vehicle (GF 117E) needs
to be signed.
SUPERVISION TIMES
Please note that teachers are on supervision duty 15 minutes before the start of the school day. For safety reasons we ask that you do not drop your child off at the school prior to 8:30 a.m. Students are not allowed inside the school prior to 8:45 a.m. or after 3:15 p.m. unless they are under the direct supervision of a staff member.
DROP-OFF, PARKING AND KISS AND RIDE
Thank you very much to those families who follow our Kiss and Ride expectations to keep our students safe. In order to ensure proper traffic
flow we remind all motorists to:
Drop off students using the Kiss and Ride Area at the side of the school. Remember that you must remain in your vehicle, and DO NOT PARK IN THIS AREA. DROP OFF AND DRIVE OFF. Please be
considerate of others behind you trying to drop off their children.
If you need to help your child out of the car or if you are planning to leave your vehicle, park in a parking space only. Do not park, even if you are waiting in your vehicle in any reserved spaces,
including handicapped.
Refrain from stopping in the bus zones.
ONLINE PAYMENTS
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce
the introduction of School Cash Online. School Cash Online allows
parents and community members to pay school-related fees online
safely, quickly, and easily. Parents can purchase items like spirit wear,
lunches, and field trips - anytime, anywhere. To directly login or to
register, visit School Cash Online at
https://dpcdsb.schoolcashonline.com/. Parents will be able to pay
online using Visa and MasterCard.
TREATS IN THE CLASSROOMS
In order to respect the caution required for bringing food into the school, parents are asked to use alternate methods to recognize your child’s birthday. This could be in the form of a book donated to the class in your child’s name or a non-edible treat i.e. pencil, sticker etc. Donuts from Tim Horton’s, or any other products that are NOT Nut Free, will no longer be
permitted as a treat in class.
