From Father Holloway
Dear Parishioners,
My trip to Alaska was a great experience. Travel is something I enjoy even though flying for instance can be a hassle. Some are not travelers preferring to stay home or not take much vacation at all. However, we all need to restore our batteries, to refresh ourselves in some way.
We Americans tend not to make use of all our vacation days. You notice that I don’t have that issue. Over the years I have found it is better for you well being to take some time away from your routine, retired or not retired.
Now I know that those who are homebound or taking care of someone it is difficult to find time but even then, I would encourage you to be mindful of the need to find some time to take a breather. It is helpful not only physically but spiritually as well. Setting time for prayer for instance is one way.
I pray we can all find rest from time to time.
God Bless,
Fr. Dave

CATHOLIC CHARITIES
THANK YOU
Thank you to those who
came out to Catholic
Charities Special Luncheon
featuring Lamar Hunt, Jr. The words he shared regarding his faith,
family, and giving back to the community were especially inspiring. It
was a beautiful day on campus and the support of multiple businesses
and individuals in the community made for a very real example of
giving back.
Thank you also to everyone who helped to provide school supplies
through the Catholic Charities School Supply Drive. The month of
August, with all the back to school obligations, can put a real strain on
many of our area families. Your support helped to relieve their burden.
School supplies are needed throughout the year. If you’re interested in
donating, please contact Nancy Butters, Development Manager, at
[email protected] or 816-659-8266.

Stewardship Bulletin Reflection: August 25, 2019 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Is. 66:18-21; Ps. 117; Heb. 12:5-7, 11-13; Lk.13:22-30
Today’s readings show us that it is not enough to be Christ’s disciples in name only. To be a real disciple, we must live for Christ every day and in every aspect of life. This kind of life takes strength and discipline. Intentionally and consistently offering the Lord
the best of our Time, Talent, and Treasure
through a stewardship way of life is a form of
spiritual discipline. These spiritual disciplines
teach us to become ever more aware of God’s
constant provision for us and they keep us on
the narrow path towards the Kingdom of
Heaven. The more we embrace this way of life,
the more we can be “trained” by the Lord in the ways of true discipleship.
Though difficult, these disciplines become a source of spiritual strength.
Our Lord Himself speaks of the difficult path to the Kingdom of Heaven in
today’s Gospel passage from Luke. He is asked, “Lord, will only a few be
saved?” Jesus responds, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell
you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” Showing up for Mass
on Sunday while living as if Christ is an afterthought the rest of the week does
not make us disciples. What’s more, this approach to our faith is an unjust and
unloving response to our good God who has given us all that we have and are.
Jesus does not want us to merely go through the motions of faith. He wants much
more from us and for us. He wants to know us deeply and for us to get to know
Him so that we become His holy disciples. This is not a burden; it is a privilege.
But it does take discipline, the discipline of a stewardship way of life.

Quotes of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Feast Day: August 20
“Let us not imagine that we obscure the glory of the Son by the great praise we lavish on the Mother; for the more she is honored, the greater is the glory of her Son. There can be no doubt that whatever we say in praise of the Mother gives equal praise to the Son.”
“True love does not demand a reward, but it deserves one.” “To have a restful or peaceful life in God is good; to bear a life of pain in patience is better; but to have peace in the midst of pain is the best of all.” “A saint is not someone who never sins, but one who sins less and less frequently and gets up more and more quickly.” “The three most important virtues are humility, humility, and humility.” “God will either give us what we ask, or what He knows to be better for us.” “We find rest in those we love, and we provide a resting place in ourselves for those who love us.” “The rivers of grace cannot flow uphill, up the steep cliff of the proud man’s heart.” “He rightly reads scripture who turns words into deeds.” “If you would know whether you have made a good confession, ask yourself if you have resolved to abandon your sins.” “The tears of those repenting are the wine of angels.” “Your actions in passing, pass not away, for every good work is a grain of seed for eternal life.’
“The Eucharist is that love which surpasses all loves in Heaven and on earth.” “If anyone makes himself his own master in the spiritual life, he makes himself scholar to a fool.” “I have ascended to the highest in me, and look, the Word is towering above that. I have descended to explore my lowest depths, and I found Him deeper still.” “The more I contemplate God, the more God looks on me. The more I pray to Him, the more He thinks of me too.” “Theirs is an endless road, a hopeless maze, who seek for goods before they seek for God.” “Many of those who are humiliated are not humble. Some react to humiliation with anger, others with patience, and others with freedom. The first are culpable, the next harmless, the last just.” “Ingratitude is the soul’s enemy...Ingratitude is a burning wind that dries up the source of love, the dew of mercy, the streams of grace.” “The peacemakers shall be called the sons of God, who came to make peace between God and man. What then shall the sowers of discord be called, but the children of the devil? And what must they look for but their father’s portion?” “So far from being able to answer for my sins, I cannot even answer for my righteousness!” “It is no great thing to be humble when you are brought low; but to be humble when you are praised is a great and rare attainment.” “There is no greater misery than false joys.” “Prayer is a wine which makes glad the heart of man.”

Care for Creation ~ Sunday September 1
Within creation, “human life is grounded in three
fundamental and closely intertwined relationships:
with God, with our neighbor, and with the earth
itself,” Pope Francis writes. Care for the Earth Day
slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called
to protect people and the planet, living our faith in
relationship with all of God’s creation. This
environmental challenge has fundamental moral and
ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.
Our God-given role is not to dominate the Earth, but
to “till and keep” it: to make wise use of its
resources, while preserving its health for all
creatures and for future generations, since all of us
share (and none of us owns) this planet. In our sinful
attempt to refuse the limits and responsibilities God
gave us, we have ruptured our original harmony with
creation. Jesus, however, showed us what restored
relationship can look like. And as the risen Christ, he
holds all creatures and directs them toward their final
fulfillment.
