Gospel Reflection: Assumption – 75 th Mahrajan Readings: Rom 12:915 & Lk 10:3842

Although we sometimes wish we had better qualities of character, even more often we wish for guidance! So many decisions confront us big ones, little ones and we just don’t know which way to go. Where can we find direction? Our Divine Guide is the Holy Spirit. (If you want a picture of this truth, read the Acts of the Apostles; you will find the Spirit directing every thing.) Once we acknowledge that the guidance we need for our everyday choices is available in the Holy Spirit, we are ready for a new experience of the Spirit. But how do we keep it going?

We practice doing what Mary of Bethany knew so well. Most often, however, we act more like Mary’s sister, Martha. We are very good at doing. We know how to work hard, strive, figure things out, worry, take care of people, solve problems, …. But when we need the Spirit’s guidance, we hardly know how to receive it. Mary is eager to hear Jesus’ words, open and ready to welcome them. Like her, we need to practice being eager for the Spirit’s guidance and allowing it to direct us.

The Spirit always knows what is best and will happily communicate guidance to us. Yet we often think that we can figure it out for ourselves. Then we wonder why we aren’t guided!

If we are never receptive until we are desperate, we will find it pretty difficult to hear the Spirit. How about practicing daily eagerness to receive the Spirit’s direction? It’s a little like reporting for duty and inquiring what the Spirit wants to do through us in this day. It may be a task; it may be an attitude; it may be expected or unexpected. Whatever it is, we practice daily being ready to hear and ready to allow the Spirit’s action through our activities.

We have often heard: “Ask and you shall receive.” So, when we need guidance and even when we don’t think we need guidance we can ask. Then we can sit quietly, attentive to the Spirit, and open ourselves with an eager attitude so that we can receive. Guidance will be given. We will know the Spirit, our Mentor, is with us.

The Mahrajan is our major fundraising event to support the church. The cost of sponsoring on the Mahrajan is over $25,000, including major expenses for food, park and tent rental, and entertainment. Our goal is to continue the high quality of this event that you have experienced, to maintain our traditions, and to continue to create memories for future generations. We would like you to attend the Mahrajan in a spirit to enjoy every bit of it and to support our church through your fraternal generosity and bounty of heart.

We know that many of you have traditionally brought your own “picnic” meals to the Mahrajan. While we value the traditions of all the families who have made the Mahrajan what it is today, we ask you to consider supporting our efforts by limiting what you bring onto the festival grounds, and to enjoy the food and drink served at our booths by our hardworking parishioners and volunteers. Your purchases will help to defray the increasing overhead of this wonderful event, and insure its continuation. In addition to supporting the church, we wish to avoid liability for food which may not have been stored properly before being eaten at the Mahrajan.

Since our church is required to purchase a Special Events Beer License from the State of West Virginia, it is our responsibility to monitor the consumption of alcohol at the Mahrajan. We request (1) that you not bring any alcoholic beverages onto the Mahrajan grounds at the Oglebay Site One and (2) that you limit your consumption of alcoholic drinks to only those sold at the festival. Mahrajan Sponsorships Encouraged

We honor the following generous supporters of the Mahrajan for their donations towards defraying the high cost of running our traditional Mahrajan. Please remember, any donation small or great is appreciated and the names of the benefactors will be printed in the bulletin and in the Mahrajan Ad Book.

You can help to guarantee the success of this year’s Mahrajan with a major sponsorship of one of the following: Lebanese Singer–$1,000; Alhambra Dance Troup–$500; Cultural Booth, Souvenir Booth, Game Booths, Beverage Booths, Food Booths–$250 each. All major sponsors will be recognized on a sign displayed at the festival.

Donations of any size will be appreciated and will contribute to a great festival. Gifts of $100will be recognized at theBenefactor Level. Gifts of $50 to $99will be recognized at the Donor Level. Gifts of $25 to $49will be recognized at the Patron Level.

Maronites = Catholics of the East Christian Presence in the MiddleEast (History 1011)

The Maronite Church traces its roots back to Saint Maron, a hermitmonk of the 5 th century, who lived above the banks of the Orontes River, near Antioch, Syria. After his death, a church was built over his grave and his disciples built a monastery which formed the nucleus of the Maronite Church. This monastery of Saint Maron was, until the 7 th century, a stronghold of faithful adhering to the pronouncement of the Council of Chalcedon and was also a center of missionary activity in northern Syria. The faithful later fled to the mountains of Lebanon because of persecution and it was there that the Maronite Patriarchate was formed. The Maronite Church is a part of the Universal Catholic Church. It follows the Eastern Antiochene Rite and it takes pride in the fact that it has always maintained allegiance to the Successor of Saint Peter and the See of Rome.

Throughout the history of Lebanon, the figure of the Maronite Patriarch has always been a spiritual leader as well as the leader of the “Maronite Nation.” During the time of the Turkish Empire, the authorities in Istanbul considered the Maronite Patriarch as the representative of his people. After the First World War, it was the Maronite Patriarch who went to Paris to obtain the independence of Lebanon. The figure of the Maronite Patriarch is still considered today to be the most significant Christian spiritual leader in the Middle East.

Did you know that there are 22 branches within the Catholic Church? Each of these 22 branches have a unique Liturgy, theology, spirituality, and Canon Law, and is characterized by its own cultural and linguistic influences. All these 22 branches are united in three things: Faith, the Seven Mysteries (Sacraments), and Hierarchy (Pope). These 22 branches sprouted out of our major cities in early Christianity: Antioch (in Turkey), Alexandria (in Egypt), Constantinople (Capital of Byzantium, in Turkey), and Rome (in Italy) Twenty one of these branches originated in the East and one in the West that is the Roman Catholic Church.

The Maronite Syriac Church originated from Antioch where the followers of Christ were called Christians for the first time. Old Aspects of Maronite History Maronite double monasteries: In those monasteries there used to live a double community of men and women. There was a common chapel, with division between the two groups done by heavy iron cancels. The nuns bred the Qazz (Silkcocoons), washed and cooked for the entire community. The monks conducted the great labors of the fields. With the time, the nuns managed to chant on their own the Divine Office in Syriac language. In Northern Lebanon, where the Maronite settlements were much older than those in the Center, the phenomenon of the DOUBLE Monasteries did never grow to become a matter of contest. But after the year 1600, nuns were found in those monastic institutions. Money & Prices: The value of the money was, as before the industrial revolution, very high. The monetary unit in Lebanon was the Piastre (Qorsh = 20 US cents). A major unit was a Purse (Kees of 500 Piastre). With

12 2008 Bulletins/Bulletin # 32 8.10.2008 Bulletin one Piastre, one could buy a head of goat, or nine kilos of meat (18 pounds). The Piastre was divided into 14 Shaheeniyehs (1.5 US cent ea). A parish priest perceived an honorary of 2 Shaheeniyehs (3 cents) per baptism or per funeral. He received 3 (4.5 cents) per marriage. The Patriarchal Charity was 20 Piastres a year ($4). Is this ancient Maronite liturgy rich or poor? The Maronite liturgy was and still is very rich according to the Maronite tradition It. contains more than 22 anaphoras, or Canons, for the important feasts of the year. There is a different form of Consecration in each of the 22 anaphoras. The Maronite liturgy, as mentioned before, derives from that of St. James the Less, vhich was initiated in Jerusalem and deveLoped in Antioch. The Maronites, therefore, share this same heritage with the Chaliean Rite, the Syrian Catholic Rite, the Ola Syrian Rite, the Malabarese and Malankarese Rites of India. Ever since the time of the Apostles and the first centuries of Christianity, the Church of Antioch was a great missionary center for the Catholic Church. Communion Under Both Species?

Both unleavened and leavened breads were in common use among the Maronites. Their priests were distributing Holy Communion under both species until the latter part of the 17th century, when this practice was discontinued due to the influence of the “Latinizers.”

Story: A Lesson from Rose The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we

didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eightyseven years old. Can I give you a hug?"

I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she gave me a giant squeeze. "Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel."

"No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me.

After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet and I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said "I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know."

As we laughed she cleared her throat and began: "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success.

1 "You have to laugh and find humor every day." 2 "You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking

around who are dead and don't even know it!" 3 "There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and

lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eightyeight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change."

4 "Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."

She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose." She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all

One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

Mary’s Plea The Blessed Mother said to me, Come to me, my child, “I’ll intercede for all your needs.” And she turned to me and smiled. Her hands arose in fervent prayer, Her face lit up the sky. She pleaded with the Savior, And said, “I know she’ll really try.” “With Your permission, I’ll be her guide, Let me stay by her side. And when all her sins are forgiven, We gain another saint for heaven.” Thank you, Mary, Thank You Lord, For all the gifts on me bestowed. I will praise you everyday, As I travel along life’s way.

A Time to Laugh (501) Designated Decoy

A police officer was waiting across the street from a bar parking lot late on a Saturday night watching for drunks trying to drive home. After a short wait, one particularly sad case stumbled out the door with the front of his shirt soaked. He was blearyeyed and confused as he wandered to the parking lot looking for his car. He finally located his car, fumbled for his keys, bumped his head while getting into the car, and drove off, bumping the curb on the way.

Of course the man didn't get very far before the police officer was on him, and he immediately pulled over. The police officer had him step out of the car and proceeded to administer several sobriety field tests. The driver seemed to have considerable difficulty understanding some of the tests. In fact, he failed all the tests miserably: he couldn't touch his nose, he couldn't walk straight, he couldn't stand on one foot, and he couldn't recite the alphabet quickly. The final legal step, of course, was the Breathalyzer, so the police officer asked his subject to blow into the tube. The green light indicated that the man was not drunk. In disbelief, the police officer checked the Breathalyzer and had the suspect try again. Another green lightthe guy's bloodalcohol level was legal.

"All right," said the police officer, "how can you pass a breath test when you're so obviously falling down drunk?"

"Well, it's like this," replied the man. "I'm the designated decoy."

What Fish? A man carrying two buckets of fish was stopped by a game warden while leaving a northern Michigan

lake well known for its fishing. The game warden asked the man, "Do you have a license to catch those fish?" The man replied, "No, sir. These are my pet fish."

"Pet fish," the warden repeated. "Yes, sir. Every night I take these here fish down to the lake and let them swim around for a while. I

whistle, they jump back into their buckets, and I take them home." "That's a bunch of hooey! Fish can't do that!" The man looked at the game warden for a moment and then said, "Here, I'll show you. It really works." "Okay, I've got to see this!" The game warden was curious now. The man poured the fish into the lake; then he stood patiently and waited. After several minutes the

game warden turned to the man and said, "Well?" "Well, what?" the man responded. "When are you going to call them back?" the game warden prompted. "Call what back?" the man inquired. "The fish."

"What fish?" the man asked.

Bad Mommy! A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few items when he noticed an old lady

following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally, he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him.

"Pardon me," she said. "I'm sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It's just that you look just like my son who died recently."

"I'm very sorry," replied the young man. "Is there anything I can do for you?" "Yes," she said. "As I'm leaving, can you say, 'Goodbye, Mother'? It would make me feel so much

better." "Sure," answered the young man. As the old woman was leaving, he called out, "Goodbye, Mother!" Then as he stepped back to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50. "How can that be?" he asked. "I only purchased a few things!"

"Your mother said that you would pay for her," said the clerk.
