Immigration, Biblical References

Immigration continues to spark political and religious debate in our land. I am providing today

some biblical teaching that form the basis of Catholic thought on this important moral issue.

I offer it for your prayerful reflection and respectful conversation.

What Scripture Teaches

~ from Welcoming the Refugee and Migrant, by Catholic News Service

In Genesis, God calls on Abraham to abandon his home and migrate to a new land. Later, Jacob and

the Israelites follow joseph to Egypt, migrants escaping a famine in their homeland. In the Book of

Exodus, the tribes of Israel flee Egypt and wander in the desert for 40 years, refugees in search of

the Promised Land.

This early history, of migration had a profound impact on the Israelites. Hospitality was a prized vir-

tue, and in Leviticus the people were told that they must love the foreigner in their midst: “When an

alien resides with you in your land, do not mistreat such a one. You shall treat the alien who resides

with you no differently than the natives born among you; you shall love the alien as yourself ; for you

too were once aliens in the land of Egypt” (19:33-34)

The word parish reflects our own self-image as a pilgrim people. It comes from the Greek word

paroikos, which means a body of migrants or sojourners living in a specific territory.

For information on what you can do to support immigrants and refugees the OLG Immigrant Minis-

try is here to help! Go to https://www.olgseattle.org/news/immigrant-resources on the OLG web-

site. Immigrant Ministry is also welcoming new members.

Join them at their next meeting— Friday August 17th, 9:30am, in the Pastoral Center.

Votive Candles

The ancient Catholic tradition of lighting candles symbolizes Christ’s divine light in our lives. We celebrate this light in a powerful way in our baptism. We also light candles for those who have gone before

us, for our prayers of intentions and thanksgiving, and for many rea-sons when we need to remember the power of Christ’s light. Our

church has always provided tea lights but we also have the large 6-day candle inserts available for your use. We are asking for a donation to help offset the cost of the larger candles so that we can keep them in stock. You can place your donation in the offertory basket at mass

or in the small lock boxes near the candle racks. NOTE: please use only the candle inserts that are provided.

Faith Formation

Date Change - Save The Date

Faith Formation Registration and Open House Sunday, September 16th

From 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

5 Ways To Keep The Faith This Summer

1) See God In All Things - We Catholics have a rich history of seeing the ordinary and perceiving the extraordinary. Our Sacraments allow us to see ordinary things like, water, bread, wine, oil, as doors to the sacred that reveal God. This sum-mer we can use our: “sacramental imagination” to see God in new places as we travel, as we garden, as we spend time outside, and even as we watch Little League. An expression attributed to Saint Ignatius of Loyola explains our goal as believers: “to see God in all things”. Summer is a time when we can slow down, find time for reflection, and perhaps have peace and calm within to see God in the everyday.

2) Recharge The Family Batteries - The Gospels tell us that even Jesus needed time to recharge; Jesus would withdraw from the crowds and pray alone. Think of summer as your time to withdraw from your crowds and spend time with God.

3) Adjust Your Summer Schedule - How do we continue our faith journey in the summer without regular schedules and religion classes? Of course, God’s revelation never ends. The Catechism states God’s revelation can be encountered in “the great book of creation, and that of history - the page on which the ‘today’ of God is written” (CCC.2705).

4) Go Outside And Pray - the Celts in Ireland are famous for having their church gatherings outside; you won’t find many cathedrals in Ireland. They believed creation was holy; they worshiped in the ‘Cathedral of Creation’. Recall the story of Moses, as he approached the burning bush he was told to remove his shoes because he was standing on “holy ground.”

5) Find God As A Family - God is always with us, but we are the ones who get too busy to notice God’s presence. An old story is told of a Monk who went looking for his donkey. He rides into a village on his donkey and asks frantically if anyone has seen his donkey. The villagers just laugh at him, so he rides to the next village and asks them, they also laugh at him. Finally, he proceeds to a third village on his donkey and asks them if they have seen his lost donkey. They laugh, and then tell him he is a fool because he is riding on his donkey while looking for his donkey! The monk thanks them for helping him find his donkey but then he ponders; “You say I am a fool, and perhaps I am, but no more a fool than people who go looking for God!”

Lettuce Pray has returned to OLG. If you’re a home gardener, here’s all you need to do to participate: Sunday morning, step out into your garden and pick what’s fresh, bring it to church, and put it in the Lettuce Pray box in the narthex. If you don’t garden, you can also buy fresh produce and donate it. OLG volunteers come every Sunday during the growing season to pick up the produce and transfer it into cold storage at the West Seattle Food Bank. Thank you for sharing what comes from your heart, and your garden, with those in need in our community!

The inter-national food security programs in the Farm Bill provide lifesaving emergency assistance and an opportunity for our most vulnera-ble brothers and sisters to lead healthy, productive and dignified lives. Programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Pro-gram (SNAP), the emergency Food assistance Program (TEFAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) help those most critically vulnerable and hungry here in the United States. Free Summer Meals And Recreation Activities

This summer, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Human Services Department, and United Way of King County are part-nering to host a drop-in summer program offering free meals and recreation activities to kids and teens ages 1 to 18. Recreation may include arts, crafts, board games, and organized recreational games. The program will run daily from June 27th to August 24th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday rain or shine at 19 park sites across Seattle, including Highland Park (1100 SW Cloverdale St.).

St Vincent de Paul Society

During June, members of St Vincent de Paul helped 163 people with goods and services amounting to $10,744.12 (not including food assistance). This has included providing clothing, hygiene items, medicine, medical treatment, bus tickets, rent, utilities, and household goods. Over 33 people were kept from becoming homeless because St Vincent’s helped pay their rent or provided a motel room. Another 49 people got help with their utili-ties. Because of the increasing cost of housing in the Seattle ar-ea, more people are asking for help with their rent and utility payments.

Please be as generous as you can in St. Vincent’s collection of food and donations and keep these members in your prayers as they follow Christ’s words....”feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless.”
