Mission Statement Our Lady of Good

Counsel Parish Lawrence ~ Methuen

Our Lady of Good Counsel is a diverse multi-cultural parish serving the Catholic community of Methuen and Lawrence. We are committed

to building a community of faith intent upon God, in unity of mind and heart.

We are a family of believers, joined by our Baptism, and nurtured by the Eucharist.

As children of God, we endeavor to bring the love of Christ to all we meet. We are committed to be the Body of Christ, rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church. Together we worship

and praise our God. Guided by prayer and the counsel of the Blessed Mother, we minister to the community through faith formation, fellow-ship, and service. With diligence, compassion, and love we endeavor to help others come to know and love Jesus. Empowered by grace, constant in our mission, we strive to be led by

the Holy Spirit.

PARISH OFFICE HOURS

Monday to Thursday 8 am to 3 pm

Friday

A Message from Fr. Chris . . . While Lawrence and Methuen are in the “Red Zone”, meaning our COVID-19 numbers are trending up, we will be doing temperature screenings at the entrance to the Church. You will be notified of what your tempera-ture is and if it is elevated you can go home and be in touch with your doctor for further guidance. Remember to sign up for Masses as the other require-ment while in the “Red Zone” is that we keep a list of all who attended our Masses. This is easily accomplished by signing up by following the link on our website at www.olgcparish.com OR by calling the office and ask-ing Denise to sign you up. If you come to Mass and have forgotten to sign up, please call the office on Monday so we can have you included on the list. This list is so that IF we have some-one attends a Mass who later tests positive we can notify all those affected. Continue to wear your masks and practice social distanc-ing, and to pray for an end to the virus and a safe return to life as we know it and love it! Thank you for your co-operation! Fr. Chris

September 20, 2020 Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish , Methuen ~ Lawrence 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners, It is the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time and our first reading is from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. This reading says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.” Obviously this leads us to re-flect on the transcendent nature of God, who is unaffected by the sin of people. But the Psalm response seems to imme-diately introduce another aspect of God, His imminence. In the past, I have preached that I liked the word looming to define imminence because it seems to bring that image of a strong, abiding Presence that is felt more than seen. Once again, we find ourselves reflecting on the God who is far above us while being very close, mysterious while re-vealed. Of course, our God has revealed Himself to us, and we find ourselves in union with Him when we are doing His will. One definition of holiness is when my will and God’s will are the same… and that doesn’t happen because God has changed His mind! It happens when I finally align myself to His will for me. Our first reading begins with “Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near.” When I am in union with God’s will for me, it is then that I can seek Him. The Transcendent God becomes Imminent when I call Him Father and render Him my obedience and sacrifice to Him my will. This can strike us early on in our spiritual journey as a one-way street. I must do everything that God asks. Just follow orders, do what you are told, “pay, pray, and obey!” When we grow in the spiritual life, we come to know that what God is calling me to give up are only those things that get in the way of a fuller union with Him. His thoughts are not my thoughts and His ways are not my ways. But when I make my thoughts more like His, and my ways more like His, I begin to find the peace that the world cannot give. As I grow in the spiritual life, I desire less those things that separate me from God and desire union with Him all the more. Isaiah tells us “turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving.” When I do, I find a God who is not far away from me at all, but one whose love fills my heart and my soul. This section of Isaiah is called “An Invitation to Grace”. The Prophet shares God’s desire for us to seek Him and to find Him in our prayer and worship. We are mindful then of the direct encounter we have with Jesus, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist at Mass. We enter into Holy Communion with our God through the Eucharist. This union is only as deep as I allow it, although the potential depth is almost impossible to comprehend. How much am I willing to be in Communion with our Lord, to let my thoughts be His thoughts, and my ways to be His ways. The Navarre Com-mentary on the Major Prophets (p. 241) quotes Pope Saint Paul VI in explaining the passage: “Therefore, the invitation extended by the prophet is a call to Christians to partake of the Blessed Eucharist. Paul VI, urging the faithful to take part in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, wrote: “How could we fail to take part in this encounter, to partake of the banquet that Christ has lovingly prepared for us? Our participation should be dignified and filled with joy. Christ, crucified and glorified, comes among his disciples to draw them all into the power of his resurrection. It is the pinnacle, here on earth, of the Covenant of love between God and his people: the sign and source of Christian joy, the preparation for the eternal banquet in heaven” (Gaudete in Domino, 322). God bless, Fr. Chris

Deacon Steve Murphy marked his 24th Anniversary of Or-dination on the Feast Day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, September 14, 2020. Deacon Steve preached at the Daily Mass that day and the text that follows is excerpted from his homily. Thank you and congratulations Deacon Steve! “Today, on this Feast Day I celebrate my twenty-fourth year of diaconal ordination and ministry. I thank the Lord for the many blessings and for all the gifts he has given me in life. My wife Linda, my children, my grandchildren, my friend and Pastor Father Chris and all of you the pa-rishioners here at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish that I have come to know and love. You that have prayed with me and have support-ed me along the way walking the journey of Christ in a most profound and prayerful way are so precious to me. And those of you that I have prayed with in sickness and at the death of a loved one or a difficult time in life have been times of Grace. I have taken my vows and promises seriously knowing the true love of God not only emanates from him but in and through each and every one of you. On the day of my Ordination I promised to be a Herald of the Gospel teaching what I believe and believing what I preach and teach. This I hope I have done. My ministry is a ministry given to me by God as a ministry of Word, sacrament, and service. That is the grace of the sacrament of Holy Orders that I have received. Ordination is not all about me it is about service to the church and God’s people. So, as I reflect today upon my past twenty-four years and the future to come I do it with a prayer in my heart and on my lips that simply says: Lord, help me to gaze up the Cross. Help me to experience in Your own sufferings a taste of Your final victory. May I be strengthened in my ministry as I look upon You. Jesus, I trust in You.”

Our priests are often at the center of efforts that build

strong support systems for all of us. In addition to

their daily pastoral responsibilities, they help establish

social service organizations, offer spiritual support for first

responders, operate parish food pantries, and recently, in

response to the pandemic, put their lives at risk to provide

comfort and peace to those suffering with COVID-19.

Healthier priests build stronger communities. And the

Clergy Health and Retirement Trust (CHRT) is dedicated to

keeping our priests healthy.

This September, you can support the CHRT’s mission

by giving to the special collection at Masses on

September 19/20. Every gift makes a difference and is

a symbol of gratitude for all our priests who don’t just

observe need in our communities; they seek it out so

they can respond.
