“The life of the community, in days and years, is made up of a long string of events. Individual prayers, daily Masses, the communion of children, confirmations, weddings, and funerals, drop-in visitors who sit quietly for a moment, a helping hand to someone in need: these are the small events that, over time, make up the strong web of faith and history that form the actual Basilica” (The Basilica of Saint Mary: Voices from a Landmark, Peg Guilfoyle),Designed in the Beaux Arts style, construction of church began in 1907. The exterior was completed in 1914; the interior completed in 1926—including the addition of the stained glass windows designed, constructed, and installed by Gaytee Stain Glass Co., a local business.During the early stages the church was to be Immaculate Conception, but at the cornerstone laying, Archbishop John Ireland called it Saint Mary and renamed the parish. Known as The Pro-Cathedral of Saint Mary, the church was granted the title of The Basilica of Saint Mary by Pope Pius XI, February 1, 1926. It is the first Minor Basilica in the United States of America.The vision of the Basilica community is “Seek the well-being of the city to which I have sent you. Pray for it to the Lord. For in seeking its well-being you shall find your own.” (Jeremiah 29:7) “The vision and the programs that spring from it are a natural evolution of the parish’s longtime place in the city’s affairs, and a response to the diverse charter of its people” (The Basilica of Saint Mary: Voices from a Landmark, Peg Guilfoyle). As the first parish in Minneapolis on the west side of the river, nearly all our social justice and sacramental ministries started in the 1870s. Much of the community life of The Basilica of Saint Mary located on 16th and Hennepin is not much different than the community life of the original Church of the Immaculate Conception located on 3rd and 3rd. Events, whether small or large, celebrated at The Basilica are all significant to our history.

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
