GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES
“It’s going to get worse before it gets better” is a phrase that prepares us to buckle up for a rough ride. We know that enduring a difficult time will require some strenuous physical or emotional energy on our part before we experience the calm of normality. Our past experience tells us that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we know how long it will last and if we know that something better awaits us. Getting through the tough times while holding to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend’s readings. They point toward the promises of God’s kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of this world.

IS GOD REAL? We have all had
this question at some point during
our life. Remember the disciple
Philip talking with Jesus in (Matt
14:8-14) and requesting Jesus show
him the Father. Jesus said, "Have I
been with you such a long time and
you still do not know me,
Philip? Whoever has seen me has
seen the Father." Jesus was saying
that He and the Father are one and
the same, Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit. We communicate with God
through prayer but do we take the
time to listen? To do the Father's
will, we must listen to the leading
of his Spirit.
Having difficulty hearing God's
will for you? Call the Inner-
Healing Ministry at 530.588.4386.

NEW CHURCH
DIRECTORY: It has
been almost 5 years since
our last ODS Church
Directory was published. We have
lots of new families in our parish,
so it is time to think about
publishing a new book.
Lifetouch, the publisher of our
directory, has some new and
exciting programs that make it
much easier for us as a parish
community. We are hoping to do
the photography sometime in the
spring.
We need a person, or two, willing
to take on the role of Directory
Coordinator (s). It is a fun project
that only lasts a few months.
Interested? Contact Rich Ripp @

St. Vincent de Paul
Our Divine Savior, St.
Vincent de Paul is looking
for a donated space in Chico
that can house an office for daily
use, with some client visits. We
would be storing some canned food
there as well, as bins of marked
clothing that are taken with us on
Home Visits. Our main goal is still
to go to our clients’ homes, as it is
proven to be the best way to know
our clients and their needs. If you
are able to help our non-profit

Reflection
JUST CAN’T WAIT! Remember how hard it was to wait
as a kid? Try it out on your own
kids and you’ll soon remember.
Promise them a treat at the end of
the day and they’ll pester you to
death until the goodie is in their
hands. Don’t waste your time
hoping they’ll forget - no chance!
The excitement of a reward builds
to an unbearable level for both
them and you.
Just when do we lose that?
Consider one of the best goodies
we adults have to look forward to:
Jesus’ return. Images of His
triumphant return don’t even raise
an eyebrow, let alone a pulse. It’ll
happen someday, we say with blasé
resignation. Why aren’t we looking
to the sky in eager anticipation?
Why aren’t we wiggling with
excitement at the idea? It gives you
second thoughts about Jesus’
statement “Whoever does not
accept the kingdom of God like a
child will not enter it.” Perhaps it’s
time we took a crash course in
childlikeness - and got a little
excited about God. Ready? Set?
Last one there’s a rotten egg!

Family Room
Goodbye and Blessings
to Janet Bertagna!
Janet Bertagna has been our parish bookkeeper here at ODS for the last four and one-half years. She has worked for the Diocese of Sacramento for thirty-eight years, starting at St. John’s, Chico and then St. Thomas More, Paradise. She is a whiz with the numbers and accounts, and just as importantly, she greets every visitor to the office and every phone caller with kindness and personal attention. Among Janet's achievements are setting up a new computer system and designing and implementing the automatic deposit system for those parishioners who prefer to make their donations to the church on-line. She has served us quietly and with great attention to detail for many years, and we are grateful. She will be leaving on November 13th to allow her to spend more time with her parents, daughters and her grandchildren. She also enjoys family genealogy research and quilting. Janet, we wish you all the best and hope you will return often to maintain our friendships. Thank you so much for all you have done for the Our Divine Savior family.
HOPE
If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes.
—St. Clement
