Hale, a local retired mi ni s ter, has been serv ing as interim pastor. · Sm i th c a me he re from Mount Pl e a s a nt Baptist Church in St.Ile Road, where he has been pastor since 1966. He also has served other churches in the a reas of educa-tion and youth in Columbus, Ga., Raleigh ' and High Point.

He also has s erved on the faculty or N. C. Baptist Assembly at Caswell and at Ridgec rest. He was pastor of the Elkin Tri-County Ministerial Association.

He was born in Eagle Springs and graduated from Nashville Technical College and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at Wake Forest. He is married to the former Doris Virginia Hooks or Whiteville and they have two daughters, Sherry and Cathy.

The Rev. Ralph Cannon, director of development and denominational relallons for the N. C. Baptist Homes, Inc. , wHI be returning to Winston-Salem.

The Rev. William Poole, ex· ecutive director of the Baptist homes for the elderly, said Cannon has been working mainly in the western section of the state raising money for

the $1 25-million home to be built in Asheville.

But he has returned to the homes ' headquarters on Reynolds Park Road , where he has an office. He is former pastor of Southside Baptist Church here.

The Asheville home is ex· peeled to be started within a month, with completion ex-pected by mid-1979. It will be on a 21-acre site in northwest Asheville and its first unit will serve 50 people and will have an infirmary.

Eventually, the home will be expanded to serve 200 people from the Asheville area

Poole said work is expected to start next month on another project, one that is the first of its kind in the 26-year history of the Baptist ministry to the elderly . Four duplex

apartments (eight units) will be built around the lake site of the house on Reynolds Park Road. Grading began yester-day.

The units were designed by Newman Va nElten Winfree Associates, local architects, · and Davey Construction Co. will be tlie builder. The apartmen ts will cost $347,773.

Poole said each. will_incluae a living-dining room, two bedrooms, two full baths, kitchen, and carport."

He said occupancy is ex-·pecled on OcL 1 and there

· already is a waiting list. .,.. Ultimately, Poole said, the

home hqpes Jo have 18 of these ;""" uruts. They are planned for in-

dependent retirement living for people "who are not ready to come into group facility, where the average age is 80," Poole said. The minimum age will be 65.

When ready to leave the apartments for the group facility, Poole said, these peo-ple will have automatic ad-mission. Apartment dwellers will have access to full health care.

Poole said the trustees hope to construct more residential or group living facilities on the Reynolds Park Road campus and lo enlarge nursing care facilities or build a separate skilled nursing care unit which could be used by residents of the six homes and by the com-munity.

"We need to double our current capacity of 75 people in the skilled and intermediate care unit," he said, "as the present unit barely takes care of our residential population for the five homes" throughout the state .
