Walter Osborne (1859-1903)• Walter Fredrick Osborne
• Born 17th June, 1859 - Rathmines, Dublin.
• His father, William Osborne, was an animal painter
• Was known as Fredrick in his early years
• Entered the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1876 to study art.
Royal Hibernian Academy
• Osborne won a silver medal in 1877
• The Albert Prize in 1880 with his "Glade in the Phoenix Park."
• Won the Taylor Scholarship in 1881 and 1882
• "Glade in the Phoenix Park.“ sold for €40,000 in 2006
Antwerp
• Osborne moved to Antwerp in 1883
• Spent two years studying under Charles Verlat at the Antwerp Academy
Exhibitions• Began exhibiting in the
Royal Hibernian Academy in 1877
• In 1883 exhibited 13 works, mostly sketches of Antwerp and Bruges
• “A Flemish Farmstead” 1884 – Exhibited in Liverpool
• Began using the name Walter instead of Fredrick in 1884
Rural England• From 1884 spent several
years living in Sussex, Berkshire and Norfolk and other parts of rural England.
• Painted rural country and village life and scenery in oil and watercolour
• “On Suffolk Sands” 1887
• His paintings were exhibited each year at the Royal Hibernian Academy

• Painted at North Littleton, Worcestershire, England in October 1884
• Oil on canvas
• The girls name is Bessie Osborne – no relation of Walter.
• Up for auction in 2012 estimated €500,000-€700,000 but didn’t sell
Street Life in Dublin • His reputation was
enormously enhanced when he began painting street scenes in Dublin.
• “Fish Market, Patrick Street.”
• Painted 1893
• Painting shows the everyday life of ordinary people
Portraits• During the last ten years of
his life Osborne became a noted portrait painter
• “Portrait of a Lady Sitting at a Table” 1893
• He was in such demand that he had to move to a larger studio
• Osborne died of pneumonia in 1903

of the most noted 19th century Irish Artists
• Osborne painted portraits, landscape, subjects and animals, and worked in oil, water-colour, pastel and pencil.
• His last painting “Tea in the Garden” was unfinished
• A dazzling fusion of naturalism and impressionism
• He was regarded as just reaching the height of his talent when he died
