THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF SOUND

Felix celebrates landing on solid ground and on

his feet!

The 43-year-old Austrian travelled 39km (24 miles) above the Earth in a tiny capsule attached to a helium balloon to make the jump. This also earned him the record for the highest-ever manned balloon ascent and the highest-ever skydive.

To reach the edge of space took two-and-a-half hours, but the fall back to Earth took just under ten minutes!

For the first four minutes, Felix was in freefall, reaching speeds of up to 833.9 mph (1,343km/h). He accelerated so fast that he had to wear a special suit to stop his blood from boiling.

At one point he appeared to lose control, as he went into a head-over-heels spin. Despite concerns from mission control, Felix managed to open his parachute and land in the desert of New Mexico… on his feet!

The record-breaking skydive took five years to plan and was watched by more than eight million people live on the internet.

After the jump, Felix said: “Sometimes you have to go really high to realise how small you are.” He later tweeted: “We live to conquer fears and pursue dreams, may our attempts and accomplishments progress humankind.”

DAREDEVIL Felix Baumgartner jumped from the edge of space and into the record books last Sunday (14 October), becoming the first freefall skydiver to break the sound barrier.

What does ‘freefall’ mean? This is where an object falls through the atmosphere without anything slowing it down. In skydiving it refers to the part of the descent before the parachute opens.

Extension ActivitiesA. NEWS IN NUMBERSThis article contains lots of numbers. Can you rewrite three facts from the story for the ‘The Week in Numbers’ section of the newspaper? The rules are:• You have to start with a number.• You have to write in full sentences.• You must use no more than two sentences. Here is an example from this week’s paper:

B. DIVING...This story tells of a record-breaking dive. To find out about a very different type of rule-breaking dive, have a look at the story in this week’s Sport News: ‘Is football being ruined by diving?’ What do you think about this hot topic?

946 years ago was the Battle of Hastings. A re-enactment this week had to be cancelled because of torrential rain.

The teacher answers are intended to provide a guide as to the AF strand of the question and possible responses from pupils working at different levels. In the level 4/5 answers we try to provide the most complete answer possible in order to provide teaching points when discussing the answers with pupils.

1) How high did Felix Baumgartner jump from and how did he get up there?AF2 - understand, describe, select, retrieve information, events or ideas from texts and use quotation and reference to the textPossible answers:L3 – identifying obvious points• 24 miles up• He got there in a balloonL4 – identifying relevant points• He jumped from 24 miles above the Earth.• He got there by travelling in a tiny capsule attached to a massive helium balloon.

2) What word has been used in the lead paragraph to describe this man and show he is someone who enjoys taking on dangerous feats?AF5 – explain and comment on the writer’s uses of language, including grammatical and literary features at word and sentence levelPossible answers:L3 – a few basic features of writer’s use of language identified• Daredevil

3) What three records did Felix break on 14th October 2012?AF2 - understand, describe, select, retrieve information, events or ideas from texts and use quotation and reference to the textPossible answers:L3 – identifying obvious pointsL4 – identifying relevant points1. The fastest freefall: he was the first freefall skydiver to break the sound barrier2. The highest-ever skydive3. The highest-ever manned balloon ascent

4) Explain why the journalist has chosen photographs to go with this article. Why do you think she has chosen these two photographs, in particular?AF6 – identify and comment on writers’ purposes and viewpoints, and the overall effect of the text on the readerPossible answers:L3 – identifies main purpose with personal response• Photos are nice to look at.• These two show him jumping and landing.L4/5 - main purpose identified with comment on overall effect on reader• The journalist has included photographs because they help tell the story in a visual way.• These two photos have been chosen because they show the beginning and the end of the story: one shows him about to jump and the other shows him after he has landed. The two together make a nice contrast showing the excitement and nervousness at the beginning, and the excitement, relief and celebrations on landing safely and achieving the record.• She might have chosen the picture of him waving on the ground to show he was successful and that he landed safely!

5) Find the numbers to complete the sentences:AF2 - understand, describe, select, retrieve information, events or ideas from texts and use quotation and reference to the textPossible answers:L3 – identifying obvious pointsL4 – identifying relevant points• It took him two and a half hours to reach his jump height of 24 miles.• During his fall, Felix’s body reached a speed of 833.9 mph (1,343 km/h).• His jump was watched by 8 million people on the internet.• This skydive took 5 years to organise.• It took him under 10 minutes to reach the ground.

6) Why do you think mission control would have felt worried during his jump?AF3 – deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from textsPossible answers:L3 – simple inference• Because it’s very dangerous / because he went into a spinL4/5 - more complex inference with explanation• During his fall he went into a head-over-heels spin and seemed to lose control.• Jumping from this height must be very dangerous, and there would be nothing his team could do to help him, so they must have been worried until they knew he was safely on the ground.

7) Why do you think people were so interested in this jump?AF3 – deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from textsPossible answers:L3 – simple inference • Because it was amazing / scary/ broke recordsL4/5 - more complex inference with explanation• This was an extraordinary thing for one man to attempt. People might have been wondering whether he would be brave enough to jump.• No one had ever jumped this high before, so people were probably curious whether it would be successful and whether he would break the world records.• People were able to watch the jump live on the internet and it’s exciting to watch an event as it happens.

8) Find two pieces of evidence that show how interested people are in this jump. (Clue, one of them is the position of the article in First News this week.) Explain why you have chosen them.AF2 - understand, describe, select, retrieve information, events or ideas from texts and use quotation and reference to the textPossible answers:L3 – identifying obvious points• Lots of people watched it on the internet.• It was on the front page.L4 – identifying relevant points• More than 8 million people watched the jump live on the internet. This is a very big audience and shows that people all over the world were interested in this jump.• This article was on the front page of First News this week. This shows that it is probably a story which interests lots of people, as the editor of a newspaper will often pick a front page story because readers are interested in it and it grabs attention.

9) Felix has broken lots of records and become very famous, but after the jump, he said: “Sometimes you have to go really high to realise how small you are.” What do you think he meant by this? AF3 – deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from textsPossible answers:L3 – simple inference• When he was high up he felt very little.L4/5 - more complex inference with explanation• Felix jumped 24 miles above the Earth. When he was up this high, almost in space, he must have felt very small in comparison to what he could see around him.• He might also have meant that even though you can be famous, break-records and do amazing things, when you are up that high you realise that you are not really that important at all. You are just a tiny speck in comparison to the Earth and space!

10) Why do you think Felix wanted to do this dangerous jump? Consider what he said in his ‘tweet’ in your answer.AF3 – deduce, infer or interpret information, events or ideas from textsPossible answers:L3 – simple inference• He was a daredevil / he likes doing dangerous things / “We live to conquer fears and pursue dreams” [direct quote].L4/5 - more complex inference with explanation• Felix is obviously a person who likes doing dangerous and exciting things.• From his tweet message we can also tell that he thinks its important to conquer fears and go after your dreams, so this might be what motivated him to jump.• His message also tells us he hopes that doing things like this might ‘progress humankind’.
