Otley Conservation Task Force is a small but enthusiastic group which aims to preserve andenhance Otley’s historic built environment and promote awareness of our heritage matters.

Rather like an informal Civic Society, we monitor proposed developments in the town and do our best to prevent in-

sensitive schemes which would be out of place in the Conservation Area. We also fight unnecessary demolitions.

One of our successes was to provide technical assistance to Otley Town Council during the conservation of the Jubilee

Clock. We also managed to secure listed-building

status for the former hospital buildings, which are

now the subject of a housing development plan.

To strengthen our efforts, we are seeking new mem-

A NEW TWIN FOR OTLEY?

HOME GROWN OTLEY

Otley is already twinned with Montereau and now, a very different and nearer community would

also like to twin with Otley! We have spoken to Ken Daphne, the chair of Otley Twinning Asso-

ciation about the idea and we also have the support of Otley Town Council.

So, who are “we”? A group of organisations from Beeston, a diverse inner city in South Leeds

and Otley would like to twin the two very different communities. The current partnership includes:

Otley Courthouse; Julia Johnson at Otley Town Council; Hamara Healthy Living Centre

in Beeston; Together For Peace Leeds; Leeds Voice; Voluntary Action –Leeds and RISS-

Connecting Rural Communities.

Twinning between a rural community and an urban community is new! It’s exciting and it could

reap dividends for both communities. We are talking about celebrating difference and increased

understanding and appreciation of each other’s strengths, challenges and issues. Rural or urban-

we can all broaden our horizons. We can share festivals, music, culture, life experiences-whatever

we want.

We are particularly interested in hearing from faith groups and schools. But all community groups

and voluntary organisations in Otley would be very welcome. If you would like to know more

about this exciting initiative please contact Kathy.

Look forward to hearing from you.

The success of the OtleyVictorian Fayre keeps ongrowing, and this year willbe the landmark 25th event.

To celebrate the Silver Anniversary

the Otley Victorian Fayre Commit-

tee has decided to celebrate with a

new charity award scheme. Each

month in the run up to the Fayre

the Committee will donate £100 to

a charity / public organisation.

All such organisations in Otley are invited to pitch their request for funding. Perhaps

you are a sports team in need of new equipment, a cub/guide group, or a PTA in need

of extra money for a specific project?

Please write in no more than 200 words how your organisation will benefit from £100

of funding and send it to the Committee Secretary [email protected] or post it

to Otley Victorian Fayre Award Scheme, 6, Trinity Rise, Otley, LS21 1RG. All applications

will be considered and the Victorian Fayre Committee will vote to decide the beneficiary

of the month.

Plans are well under way for what will surely prove to be the best Fayre yet. Indeed

this year the Fayre is changing its normal timetable and will be held on a Sunday, 12th

December from 2-8pm. The Committee hopes the Fayre being held on a Sunday will

encourage more trade for businesses within the town, will focus more as a family

daytime event and will reduce travel problems for commuters.

So, if you have any queries about the Otley Victorian Fayre Charity Award Scheme please

contact Sara Quin- Publicity Officer on 01943 463 928 or Alison Friebe- Secretary on the

above email address.

The community gardening group is celebrating its first anniversary this July. The group has had avery successful year and our monthly meetings at the Otley Courthouse now include running amini-market (swapping food and plants, etc), a seed bank (really cheap seeds/trays/growing in-structions and compost!), guest speakers, taste-ins, sow-ins, quiz and much more. We also or-ganise visits to local food producers, chutney making and are in the process of setting up ourfirst community growing area.

We are basically a self-help group, enthusiastic about growing our own food and in the process reducing our carbon 'footprint'. You don't need an allotment or a large garden to growsomething all year round - and we can show you how.

Come along and join us - open to absolute beginners and 'old hands' too.

Chamberof Trade

One of the many pleasures of Otley life is the punctuation ofthe changing seasons with events staged for, by and on behalfof the community. Many have a famous tradition and continueto grow and thrive, such as the venerable Otley Show, Carnival,cycle races, beer festival and Victorian Fayre, all attracting vis-itors and tourists for a grand day out and helping to keep thewheels of the town’s economy turning.

Otley Chamber of Trade is currently pondering the possibilityof promoting a project to help and encourage businesses toreinstate the tradition of small Christmas trees above shopfronts that many of us remember adding to the seasonal fes-tivities of years gone by. Sadly these are long since absent fromOtley but flourish with impressive effect in Skipton.

The willingness of a community to organise its own events andjoin together to help itself is as good a barometer of a town’sviability as any. There are still over 120 tree brackets above 99business frontages around town. Would you welcome their re-turn and would our businesses support the idea? Please let usknow your thoughts.

Weston Lane Junior Sports & Social Club

A History of Football and Community on Weston LaneDid you know that Weston Lane Junior Sports and Social Club is over 50 yearsold? Young people in Otley have played football at the club since 1957.

But older residents may remember the history of the club and how the club was established– it’s a story of a community working together for the benefit of all. In the 1950’s, DrRhodes, a local GP wanted a club and facilities for the community and took out a mortgageon behalf of local residents to buy the club building and land at the current site at the heartof the Weston Estate. Local people contributed to mortgage payments by buying footballcards and in 3 years, the mortgage was paid. The club building and land now belong tothe whole community.

Today the club has teams in the local youth leagues and the 2009 – 10 season was yet an-other busy and enjoyable year of football.

This year, the club have worked closely with Otley Town council and local councillors onLeeds City Council to obtain funds to insulate, provide heating and decorate the building.The local churches already use the club building as part of their Hope Programme for localadults. When refurbishment work is complete the building will be suitable for a wide rangeof other community uses.

The club welcome’s new players - registration will be in September for next year’s seasonwith training on Saturdays between10 – 12. For further information e-mail Mick Barton,club secretary [email protected]

My name is Robbie Swale and I'm the (relatively) new Centre Manager at OtleyCourthouse. I thought it might be nice to introduce myself to those people whoI haven't yet met.

I arrived at the Courthouse at the end of February and the last few months haveflown by as I've got to know everyone at the Courthouse (and quite a lot ofOtley people outside it), got to know the town, and got to know the job.

We've just launched our autumn programme, and have some really great eventsto look forward to including Ian McMillan, Red Ladder Theatre Company andAly Bain among many other things - book early to make sure you get tickets asthey've already started to go.

It has been lovely to become part of something like the Courthouse. I grew upnot too far away in Settle, and I'm very envious that Otley has such a great focalpoint for arts in the town, and that there are such high quality arts events righthere, without you having to travel to Leeds or another big city. I really hopethat as I get settled in I'll get to know more and more people from Otley, andthat we can welcome more and more people into the Courthouse.See you all soon,

Robbie Swale, Centre Manager, Otley Courthouse

Otley is now well-established as a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town. Shops and businessesdisplay the logo, the town council supports the scheme, and the paths and trails aroundthe town are well-walked. Otley residents are taking to their feet in greater numbers,and visitors are coming from far and wide to enjoy our superb local landscapes.

One of the first projects undertaken by the Walkers are Welcome team was the productionof a guide to four walks, all starting from the Jubilee clock in the Market Place. The guide hassold well, and the paths, which are all waymarked, are introducing people to the fine countryon their doorsteps. The guide, Otley:four walks is available, at £1, from shops in town.

The next project was to open up a trail from the Jubilee Clock, northwards, right acrossthe Nidderdale Area of Outsanding Natural Beauty, for 38 miles, to end at Middleham, inWensleydale. The new trail – ‘The Six Dales Trail’ – was launched at this year’s Otley walkingfestival, and is proving a great success. A guide is on sale in Otley shops.

What next? Another long-distance trail? Another set of local walks? Improving accessfor disabled people? There is plenty to be done.

Having neglected the lawn for so long that it had turned into awild flower meadow, before cutting I spent an age sweeping thearea for dozens of froglets, which had emerged from the gardenponds. The size of a fingernail these were the lucky few to havesurvived the predation of dragonfly larvae and newts as tadpoles.In three years they may return as adults to spawn in the sameponds. Meanwhile they may still be encountered in damp placesaround the garden before returning to pond bottoms or crowdingtogether beneath rocks or logs to hibernate.

Less common garden visitors are toads which usually onlyspawn in bigger ponds. Toadlets also emerge in late summerand are darker and more snub-nosed than the tiny frogs.Locally they may be found on the paths around their breedingsites at Gallows Hill, Otley Wetlands or Low Dam.

Lions also havequite an extensive social programme, both in Otley andin association with Lions from neighbouring clubs.

If you feel you could lend a hand to keep up the currentevents, and help with new ventures, Otley Lions would bepleased to meet you. They meet at 8.00pm, at The RedLion on Kirkgate, on the first and third Mondays of eachmonth, or contact David on 01943 467551.

The main aims of the project are to providepractical and emotional support to promote independenceand enhance feelings of well being. Over the course of theproject the organisation will be aiming to set up a DementiaCafé and to develop other social activities for older people inthe area. Now just over a year later the chapel has beenre-roofed by voluntary labour. Electrical lighting andheating was installed this month by the Leeds NHSFoundation Trust and a National Lottery Grant hasbeen obtained to start work on ground drainage,repair the gates and create a memorial garden.

This work would not have been possible without theefforts of over 130 people who have contributedtime and money to make the project possible. Thankyou.

Two Thousand, Eight Hundred and Sixty One

We are the unknown, the nothing, the nameless;

We are the discarded, agonizing remnants

Of a society that was too busy to grant any of us empathy,

Or treat us with any dignity in the time of our demise.

We are the unfortunate,the awkward,the taboo of our time

;

We are the mentally retarded, the social undesirables,

We lay here in the soil and mean absolutely nothing to you

;

We are the two thousand, eight hundred and sixty one.

Recently, apparently, someone made the choice quite rightly

,

To do something about our non-consensual vow of eternal s

ilence;

Soon roses red and violets blue,

Will stand proud upon the ground that was once used to bu

ry our

memory forever.

We will be the known, the something, at last the named;

We will be recognised as an agonizing tragedy;

Of a society that was once too busy to grant any of us empa

thy;

Soon we will be something more than the two thousand,

eight hundred and sixty one.
