Welcome to the City ofRancho Cucamonga’s thirdannual Broadway at the GardensProduction and tonight’sperformance of Andrew LloydWebber’s Evita. Broadway at theGardens was created to provide popularBroadway style musicals to the mostsophisticated and theatre savvy theatregoers in the Inland Empire utilizing the toplocal performers, designers, and creativeand production teams in the region. In itsfirst two years (Sweeney Todd and Rent),Broadway at the Gardens presentedmusicals that many considered “edgy.” Itwould be easy to include amusical based onthe life of the actress who rose to the heightof power in the Argentine government andwhose title character many consider to bethe first political celebrity in that “edgy

category.” However, there is nodoubt that Evita has earned aplace as one of themost popularand beloved musicals of ourtime. Many thanks for thetireless efforts and unending

enthusiasm of all of our performers, crew, designers, musicians, production andcreative teams who have helped to bringthis story to glorious life on the Lewis FamilyPlayhouse stage. Thank you for supportingquality theatre in the Inland Empire and formaking Broadway at the Gardens acontinuing success and something to lookforward to each year at the Lewis FamilyPlayhouse.

I am very excited to be a part of the fantastic production of Evita. Our designers, cast, musicians, crew, administrators and creativeteam have all worked very hard to bring this story to you,our audience.

The story of Eva Duarte de Perón is legendary, and in manycases, it has been difficult to decipher the myth from the reality. In a time when the Argentinian government was unstable andcorrupt, the people of the country were crying out for change.Eva, affectionately known as “Evita,” climbed the ladder tosuccess at this time and used her stature to provide the lowerclass, the workers, the descamisados (“shirtless ones”) with aglimpse of hope for a brighter future. Although her methodsand motives were questionable, by her death in 1952, Evita washeralded as an almost saintly figure to millions of Argentinians.

This story is as relevant as ever. When we reach out our handsto help others, are we doing so selflessly? Do we expectsomething in return? Do we help others only to promote ourown well-being? What are the costs? What are the risks? These are questions, that our story’s narrator, Che, constantlyasks Eva. These are universal questions that all of us can relate to.

Enjoy the journey.
