16 ;,[Al'S OF :\ORTHA;,lPTONSHIRE

Some years ago, Dr. Eric Gardner, of Weybridge, suggested to me, the possibility of an edition which had used the printed text of 1614-16, but with the face of each map revised in a manner not previously known to have existed prior to 1627. He possessed a loose map of Surrey with these characteristics. This suggestion offered a.n explanation for a set of three Yorkshire maps which I possessed and which had puzzled me for some time. We thereupon decided to re-examine all available Library copies of Speed's Theatre, as opportunities arose, and at the same time to keep a sharp look out on the Sale-rooms. Two copies have turned up at Sotheby's, in June 1946 and in October 1947 respectively, and have been duly secured for our 'collections. The text is undoubtedly that printed by Thomas Snodham. The title-page for the English county section is dated 1614, and the subsidiary title-pages, for Wales, Scotland and Ireland, are all dated 1616, which is perfectly standard. All the county maps include the addition of the appropriate names of the British tribes and the names of sundry Roman stations, etc., according to Camden's Britannia. These additions had previously been attributed

. to the edition of 1627, printed by John Dawson. We have assumed 1623 as a probable date for this edition. There was an edition of Speed's History (of which the Theatre formed the first four books) in that year. Although the text was printed at the same time as that for the normal edition of 1614-16, its maps were undoubtedly printed after those for the Latin edition of 1616; degrees of wear or damage on certain plates prov thi '. "R. Elstrack sculpsit" appears on the map of Norfolk, so he was presumably the engraver of these additions. On the map of

orthamptonshire "The Coritani" appears southwest of Kettering, IIBannavenna" appears to the west of Northampton between Wedon and Stowe, and IITripontium" at Towcester (!).

In THE ABRIDGMENT OF CAMDEN'S BRITANIA. WITH THE MAPS OF THE SEUERALL SHIRES OF ENGLAND AND WALES. PRINTED BY JOHN BILL PRINTER TO THE KINGS MOST EXCELLENT MAIESTIE. 1626. ob!. 8vo.

A clearly engraved map showing rivers, towns and a few villages.

Top left, the title in an ornamental cartouche. Bottom right, a cartouche containing the scale. On the back is the text of Bedfordshire; that of Northampton hire being in its turn on the back of the map of Warwickshire.

The border is formed by a double line, marked off at the left and bottom into degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude respectively the figures being printed outside the border. This was therefore th~ first individual map of the county to show latitude and longitude. The latter was ha ed on somewhere out in the At1antic, as was usual in tho e day.

In A PROSPECT OF THE MOST FAMOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD . PERFORMED BY JOHN SPEED. LONDON, PRINTED BY JOHN DAWSON, FOR GEORGE HUMBLE AND ARE' TO BE SOLD AT HIS SHOP IN POPES-HEAD PALLACE, 1627. folio. 39/55

Second title :-THE THEATRE OF THE EMPIRE OF GREAT BRITAINE . . . By JOHN SPEED . . . ANNO 1627. ARE TO BE SOLD BY GEORGE HUMBLE AT THE WHIT HORSE IN POPES HEAD ALLEY.

The face of the map is as described in No. 39. On the back the text has been printed from a new setting of type, this time by John Dawson. The printer's control is still "ri." The large initial "N" again has a standing saint, etc., as a background but now with a plain border consisting of two lines about it; inch apart and totalling 1 t.r square. This issue can be distinguished from the next, also printed by John Dawson, by the length of the heading "NORTHAMPTON-SHIRE," which in this case is 4!- ins.

43. Keer, P. 4j- x 3t ins.

Keer's series of 1599 (No. 5) is now enlarged by the issue of sixteen separate county maps, of which Northamptonshire is one, replacing the group maps which were previously used. According to Chubb "the new maps are of the same size and design as the earlier ones, and are, probably, by the same engraver." The titles of the maps have, in every case, been put into English. This map shows rivers, bridges, towns and a few village .

Top left, the title. Bottom right, the scale. Slightly to the left f the scale is a plate number "27." The border is formed by two lines.

On the back, the description of tiNorthampton-shire" begins. This issue may be identified by the word "depopulate" in the text; "de" is at the end of line 14 and "populat " at the beginning of line 15.

H wa reprinted twice with the title-page of the atlas still dated 1627 (but probably issued in 1631 and 1646 respectively). in 1646, 1662, 1 5, 1666-1668 and 1676.

In BRITAIN, OR A CHOROGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION ... OF ENGLAND ... W. CAMDEN ... PRINTED BY F.K.R.Y., and LL. FOR ANDREW HEB. 1637. folio. 19b/

Sir H. G. Fordham, in his Hertfordshire Maps, quoted an edition of this work with the imprint "Printed by F.K.R.Y. and LL. for Joyce Norton and Richard Whitaker. 1637." My own copy is printed by the same as the above but "for Andrevv Crooke. 1637." I am indebted to Mr. Edward Heawood, of the Royal Geographical Society, for the information that other booksellers for whom the 1637 edition was printed and who each had his own title-page, were George Latham and William Aspley. He further informed me that the printer's initials in all probability stand for F. Kingston, R. Young and I. Legatt, who were known to be printers at this date.

The map face is unchanged from the state described in 19b.
