G130: Health and Illness 1
Orientation
Spring 2021

G130 Course Components
• Divided into 3 sections:– Lecture– NEST (lab)– vSim Clinical
Lecture
• Zoom• Lecture hours–Monday: 8:00 10:00 and 10:30 to 12:30
NEST /Lab
• Tuesdays from 8:00 to 10:30 and 11:30 to 2:15• Fridays from 8:00 to 1:30 or 3:30
– Refer to course schedule• Open lab time is different - check the schedule
posted outside of NEST and on Canvas
Clinical Experience
• For the first six weeks (on campus on Fridays):– Clinical time will be spent between campus and online
• Starting week 7 of the semester– Clinical time may include online or community experiences – 12.5 hour clinical shifts– Students may be assigned to a clinical group on:• Wednesday• Thursday • Friday
• Schedule is subject to change
Nursing G131: Professional Nursing 1
• Enroll in Professional Nursing 1 (G131) in addition to
Health and Illness 1 (G130)
– G130 and G131 are separate classes and
enrollment in one class does not automatically
enroll one in the other.
– Nursing courses must be taken in the order
approved by BRN
• Meets on Tuesdays from 3:00 – 5:10 the first 8 weeks
of the semester
Math Competency Exam
• Given each semester. Must pass to move onto the next semester
• 3 chances to pass a math competency exam – must pass at 90%
• On-line ATI tutorial is available• Math folder on Canvas site will be open
– Canvas will be open and available one week before the start of the semester
Computers
• Must have access to a working computer with a camera
• On-line proctoring software will be via Respondus• All papers are expected to be word-processed/typed• Campus is offering a chrome book loan program

Nursing Student Requirements
• Outside company (Complio) will email students directly:– Vaccinations/shots/flu– CPR– Malpractice Insurance
• SEP/Degree Works via the counseling office• Professional Learning Contracts for those who don’t
have the following by the deadline posted on Canvas: Coursepoint, ATI, lab kits, uniforms
How to prepare for the upcoming semester
• Review information in the math folder posted in Canvas and complete the math practice problems
• Log into Canvas 1 week before the semester begins – note items on the “to-do” list– View the Lynn Skills videos (within the “Getting Ready
for School” PPT) prior to the 1st week of school
• Have stethoscope by Week 1• Have full uniform by Week 3 – order early
Preparation continued
• Order ATI – refer to nursing forms page• Register for CoursePoint – add our course classes– Concepts– Lynn Skills
• Lab kits – refer to nursing forms page• Monitor Canvas daily as important announcements
will be placed as they come up• Write a letter for upcoming scholarship opportunities
Communication Expectations
• Utilize and check your GWC student email • Respond timely (within 48 hours) of any
requests from the office or faculty• For course related information, communicate
via Canvas email starting on the 1st day of the semester
• Proper email etiquette is expected
