ThenonprofitartsandcultureorganizationswithintheCityofSanDiegoareanimportantsectoroftheregion—providingsignificantreturn on investmentbypositivelyimpactingoureconomicandcommunityvitality.In2011,68organizationsinneighborhoodsthroughoutthecityreceivedfundingthroughtheCityofSanDiegoCommissionforArtsandCulture’s(Commission)OrganizationalSupportProgram(OSP)fundedbytheTransientOccupancyTax(TOT).Thisfundingenablestheseorganizationstodevelopandimplementsomeofthenation’smostoutstandingandinnovativeperformances,exhibitionsandeducationalprograms.

MORE ArtsandCultureasanEconomicEngineThenonprofitartsandcultureorganizationsfundedthroughtheCommission’sOSPhaveanimportantimpactonSanDiego’seconomy.Theseorganizationsstimulatetheeconomywithover$170 millionindirectexpenditures,including$98 millioninsalariesandpaymentforexpertservices.Infact,the68OSPorganizationsconstituteanimportantemploymentsector,supportingaworkforceofnearly6000.Theartsnotonlycreatejobs,theyprovideacompetitiveadvantageinattractingnewbusinessesofallsizesandaskilledworkforce.

SanDiego’sneighborhoodscelebratetheircultureanddiversitythroughspecialevents,festivals,paradesandcommunitycelebrationssupportedthroughtheCommission’sCreativeCommunitiesSanDiegoprogram.Fundingtothese35 communitygroupsaddstoa growing,vibrantcultural
destination.
TheCommission’sinvestmentinpublicarthelpsensurethebeautyofourpublicplacesandourneighborhoods.WhenartisintegraltoSanDiego’sbuiltenvironmentitbecomespartofthefabricofourcommunityandencouragescivicengagementandcreativity.
MORE CreativeIndustries–BusinessandEmploymentintheArtsSanDiego’screativeeconomyisoneofthemajorstrengthsofourcityandourregion.ResearchconductedbyAmericansfortheArtsoffersanotherapproachtounderstandingthescopeandimportanceoftheartstooureconomy.Thecreativeindustriesplayanimportantroleinbuildingandsustainingeconomicvibrancythroughthegrowthofarts-centricbusinesses.
Theseindividualsandbusinessesrangefrommuseums,symphoniesandtheaterstofilm,architecture,designcompaniesandevenmusicalinstrumentmanufacturing.Theyemploypeople,spendmoneylocally,generategovernmentrevenue,andareacornerstoneoftourismandeconomicdevelopment.
TheSanDiegoregionishometo4,631arts-relatedbusinesses,bothforprofitandnonprofit,ranking7thamongthetop10largestUScities–aheadofSeattle,Phoenix,DenverandPhiladelphia.Thesebusinessesemployover22,500people,rankingus9thoverallinthecountry.
Businessleaderssaycreativityisofhighimportancewhenhiring—72%ofcompaniesthatgivetotheartsrecognizethatitstimulatescreativethinking,problemsolvingandteambuilding.

MORE CulturalTourists–ArtsandCultureasvisitorAttractionsEconomicactivitycreatedbytourismanddollarscomingintoourlocaleconomyfromoutsidetheregionalsoimpactjobsandattractrevenue.AstrategicmarketingpartnershipwiththeSanDiegoConventionandvisitorsBureau,providesaframeworkforlinkingtheartstotourismanddrawingvisitorstotheregion.
AccordingtotheSanDiegovisitorProfileStudyconductedbyCICResearch,touristswhoparticipatedinanartsandcultureactivityarethosewhoarehereformoredays(3.8vs1.8daysforallvisitors)andnearly60%ofthesevisitorsusehotelaccommodations.Inaddition,thesevisitorsspend$561pertripascomparedwiththeaveragetourist’s$235.
