Slania, Zambrano make first starts with the River Cats this season

Salt Lake City, UT - The Sacramento River Cats (4-2) fell to the Salt Lake Bees (2-5) by a score of 4-1 Wednesday night.

River Cats starter Dan Slania shut down the Bees through the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Salt Lake tagged him for four runs in the frame, including a big three-run homer off the bat of Rey Navarro. For Slania, it was his first start with the River Cats this year.

Catcher Eliezer Zambrano also made his first start with the River Cats this year, as well as made his Triple-A debut. He went 2-for-4 while catching eight innings.

Sacramento's lone run came in the sixth when Austin Slater singled to left field, driving in Christian Arroyo. For Slater, it was his sixth RBI of the season, most among River Cats this year.

Tomorrow's matchup features River Cats left-hander Michael Roth (2-0, 0.00) in his first start of the season. Troy Scribner (0-0, -.--) will go for the Bees. First pitch is set for 5:35 pm (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com.

Postgame Notes

Slania Mania: Dan Slania made his first start with Sacramento since September 2, 2016…he allowed four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings, walked three, and struck out three…threw 83 pitches (45 strikes).

Long awaited debut: In his Triple-A debut with the River Cats, Eliezer Zambrano went 2-for-4 while catching eight innings…this is his 11th season in professional baseball…had spent parts of seven seasons with Double-A Richmond.

Follow my lead: River Cats had the leadoff man reach base in five consecutive innings…only managed to score once (Arroyo, sixth inning).

RISP: Sacramento hitters struggled with runners in scoring position, going just 2-for-10 in those situations…for the night, left 10 total men on base.

Double trouble: The River Cats grounded into three double plays in tonight's loss…their most in a single game this season…through six games, have grounded into seven double plays.

Curve Blank Squirrels In Homestand Finale

Richmond Pitching K's 15 In Loss

RVA - The Altoona Curve (4-3) blanked the Flying Squirrels (3-4), 4-0 to finish Richmond's first

homestand of the season on Wednesday night at The Diamond. Richmond pitching struck out 15 batters

and held Altoona without a run from the fourth inning forward in the defeat. Emergency starter Pat

Young lasted 2 1/3 innings and took the loss. The Flying Squirrels will embark on their first road trip of

the season to Reading, PA and Bowie, MD starting Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

Altoona gained the upper hand early with a pair of runs in the first inning and one more in the second.

Kevin Newman was hit by a pitch on his left jersey sleeve to start the game and moved to third base on a

single to right field. A wild pitch then brought Newman home and Kevin Kramer then delivered an RBI

groundout for a 2-0 lead. The Curve plated one more in the third on a double play ball that brought

home Wyatt Mathisen. Mathisen doubled to open the inning. Young utilized 22 pitches in the first and

24 in the second.

Young relinquished one more run in the third inning before being replaced by reliever Jose Flores. The

righty allowed four runs on five hits over 2 /13 innings pitched in the emergency start.

The Curve's Alex McRae was on a different course, cruising through the Squirrels lineup by retiring the

first nine hitters he faced. Slade Heathcott managed the first hit for Richmond to start the fourth inning,

but a double play ended the Squirrels chances.

McRae navigated around trouble again in the fifth inning, loading the bases before retiring T.J. Bennett,

Jose Flores and Heathcott to keep the shutout intact. The righty utilized 65 pitched through five innings

of work.

Richmond's Flores kept the game intact for the Flying Squirrels through the middle innings. The veteran,

making his Richmond debut, retired all 11 hitters he faced and struck out four in the outing. Flores

tossed 3 2/3 innings to preserve a beleaguered bullpen due to consecutive extra inning games.

Carlos Alvarado entered to pitch the seventh and eighth innings and struck out six batters in the outing.

Cory Taylor followed that up with three more punch outs to make it 15 for the staff on the night.

The Flying Squirrels embark on their first road trip of the season on Thursday night in Reading, PA. Left-

hander Andrew Suarez is scheduled to face off against RHP Tyler Viza in game one of the three game

series against the Fightin Phils. The flying Squirrels return to The Diamond on Friday, April 21st against

Reading. Season tickets, mini plans and group outings are available by contacting the Flying Squirrels box

Late Rally Falls Short, Giants Lose 9-7

San Jose smacks four home runs in defeat, finishes opening road trip with 4-3 record

LANCASTER, CA - San Jose's comeback effort fell short on Wednesday night as the Lancaster JetHawks

held on for a 9-7 victory over the Giants at The Hangar. San Jose trailed 7-1 after five innings, but a late

rally brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings before the JetHawks secured

the win. With the loss, the Giants dropped two out of three games in the series and finished their

season-opening road trip with a 4-3 record.

San Jose clubbed a season-high four home runs on Wednesday as Dillon Dobson (2-for-4, 3B, HR, RBI),

Jalen Miller (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), Gio Brusa (1-for-5, HR, RBI) and Johneshwy Fargas (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI)

each went deep in the loss.

Trailing by six runs, the Giants began their comeback in the top of the sixth when Brusa smacked a solo

home run down the right field line to cut the Lancaster lead to 7-2.

In the seventh facing rehabbing Rockies reliever Jairo Diaz, Jonah Arenado led off with a single before

Fargas stepped to the plate with one out and launched a two-run home run to left. The homer, Fargas'

first of the season, brought San Jose to within 7-4.

The comeback continued in the eighth as Dobson hammered a two-out triple to deep center with two

outs and scored moments later on a wild pitch trimming the JetHawks lead to 7-5.

Lancaster though scored two key insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth against Giants reliever

Dylan Rheault to extend their advantage. Roberto Ramos led off with a single for the JetHawks before a

Mylz Jones bunt single put runners on first and second. Chris Rabago followed with an 11-pitch walk to

load the bases with still none out. Rheault recovered to strikeout Scott Burcham, but a Garrett Hampson

fielder's choice groundout plated one run. Then with Forrest Wall at the plate, Rheault uncorked a wild

pick-off throw to first allowing Jones to score a second run in the inning stretching the lead to 9-5.

San Jose continued to apply pressure in the top of the ninth as Connor Sabanosh led off with a single.

Two batters later, Miller crushed a one-out home run to left - his first round-tripper of the year - to bring

the Giants back to within two runs at 9-7. Ryan Howard then lined a single to right bringing the potential

tying run to the plate, but JetHawks reliever Salvador Justo retired Bryan Reynolds on a groundout and

induced Brusa to pop out to second ending the game.

Lancaster starting pitcher Colin Welmon (1-0) earned the win after tossing six innings with just two runs

(both earned) and four hits allowed. Welmon walked two and struck out one.

Mark Reyes (0-1) took his first loss of the year for San Jose after he was tagged for seven runs (six

earned) in 4 2/3 innings. The left-hander yielded seven hits, walked four and struck out two during his

start.

The Giants initially enjoyed a 1-0 lead when Dobson led off the top of the second with a towering solo

home run to right. The homer was Dobson's first of the season.

Meanwhile, Reyes began his night with two hitless innings before running into trouble in the bottom of

the third. An error and a walk put two runners on base for the JetHawks before Wall delivered a two-

out, two-run single into right giving Lancaster a 2-1 lead.

The JetHawks then erupted for four runs against Reyes in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back one-

out doubles from Wes Rogers and Ramos produced the first run of the frame. Jones then lofted a fly ball

to left that carried over the fence for a two-run home run and a 5-1 Lancaster advantage. The final run

of the inning scored when Rabago singled, stole second and third and came home on a Scott Burcham

sacrifice fly.

The JetHawks extended their lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth as Wall drew a leadoff walk, advanced

to third on Yonathan Diaz's single and scored when Brian Mundell grounded into a double play.

Welmon settled in after allowing the home run to Dobson as the Lancaster starter didn't surrender a hit

over the third, fourth and fifth innings.
