After quiet game one, River Cats rally to take game two

Sacramento shuts out Tacoma to earn split in Monday doubleheader at Raley Field

The Sacramento River Cats (3-1) and Tacoma Rainiers (1-3) split a doubleheader Monday at Raley Field.

Game one went to Tacoma 3-1 while the River Cats took game two 4-0.

The Sacramento River Cats (3-1) and Tacoma Rainiers (1-3) split a doubleheader Monday at Raley Field.

Game one went to Tacoma 3-1 while the River Cats took game two 4-0.

The bats were quiet in the first half of the two-game set with the River Cats managing just one run

thanks to a solo homer by right-fielder Carlos Moncrief. Tacoma followed Moncrief's blast with a two-

run sixth, scoring twice off River Cats reliever Tyler Rogers and ending the bullpen's scoreless start to the

season.

Ricky Romero took the mound for the River Cats in game two, making his first start in almost a year. The

veteran left-hander threw 78 pitches (46 strikes) over four scoreless innings. The Sacramento offense

came through late, scoring four runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including two on an RBI-double by

designated hitter Jae-Gyun Hwang.

The River Cats will head to Salt Lake City to take on the Salt Lake Bees tomorrow night at Smith's

Ballpark. Chris Stratton (0-0, 0.00) will go for Sacramento while Alex Meyers (0-0, 5.40) gets the nod for

the Bees. First pitch is set for 5:35 pm (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com.

Postgame Notes

Quote of the Night: "He had four shutout innings. He did walk the three, but he made pitches when he

had to get out of trouble. It was good to see him executing what we've been working on." - River Cats

Pitching Coach Dwight Bernard on Romero

Romero: Last pitched on April 16, 2016 in a start against the Salt Lake Bees…missed most of last season

with an elbow injury…has pitched just 20 innings since the start of the 2015 season.

Okert: Made his 2016 debut tonight with a perfect sixth inning in game two…threw 10 pitches (nine

strikes) and struck out two…since August 15, 2016, Okert has posted a 0.70 ERA (2er, 25.2ip) between

Sacramento (AAA) and San Francisco (NL).

Gregorio: Made his first start of 2017: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 1 K…threw 80 pitches (48 strikes)…the one

strikeout was his lowest single-game total since August 3, 2016 at Albuquerque (also one strikeout).

1-2-3 Hitters: Sacramento 1-2-3 hitters are a combined 15-for-40 (.375) with 10 runs scored in the

team's first four games of the season.

Curve Outlast Squirrels In Extra Innings Bullpen Battle

'Pens Toss 14 Combined Innings, One Run Allowed

RVA - Altoona (3-2) downed Richmond (2-3), 2-1 in 12 innings on Monday night at The Diamond. Both

teams scored a run in the first inning and remained tied until Altoona's Pablo Reyes singled home Wyatt

Mathisen with a base hit to left field in the top of the 12th inning. Starting pitchers Matt Gage and

Tanner Anderson both received no-decisions after lasting five innings each. Squirrels lefty Christian

Jones (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing the winning run to score on a close play at home plate.

The Flying Squirrels series and homestand continues on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. with the first Tip of

the Cap Tuesday. A full promotional schedule can be found here.

The Altoona broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the 12th inning on a base hit from Pablo Reyes, allowing

Wyatt Mathisen to score from second base. Mathisen singled to begin the inning and took second on a

sacrifice bunt. Richmond reliever Christian Jones then struck out Elvis Escobar and intentionally walked

Kevin Newman to face Reyes with the go-ahead run in scoring position. Curve reliever Montana

DuRapau (1-0) earned the win by pitching the final two innings of relief. The Curve bullpen lasted seven

innings without allowing a run.

Altoona struck first with a run in the top of the first inning off of Gage. Kevin Newman roped a double to

left field to begin the contest and Edwin Espinal drove him home with a two-out double off the glove of

left fielder Tyler Horan. Gage needed 20 pitches to finish the first inning and another 20 to close out the

second.

The Squirrels immediately evened the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first inning facing Altoona hurler

Tanner Anderson. Slade Heathcott ripped a single to begin the inning and Chris Shaw lined a double off

the base of the left field wall to tie the game.

Richmond threatened to grab a lead in the second, third and fourth innings, but hit into double plays in

each frame to nullify their scoring chances. Anderson worked around runners on base in the first four

frames and eventually retired the side in order to end the fifth.

Gage was replaced by left-hander D.J. Snelton after five innings pitched. Gage was saddled with a no-

decision despite allowing just the one run on four hits. The southpaw walked one battered and struck

out three on 83 pitches.

Altoona's Anderson also received a no-decision with a similar line as Gage's. Anderson lasted five innings

and yielded one run on five hits. He struck out three and tossed 71 pitches in the outing.

Both bullpens upheld the 1-1 contest into the 12th inning. Flying Squirrels lefty D.J. Snelton tossed the

first two scoreless innings of relief and Tyler Cyr added two more to get through regulation. Altoona

leaned on a pair of innings from righty Tate Scioneaux and three from Buddy Borden.

The Squirrels continued to apply pressure and managed to get the potential winning run to third base in

the bottom of the ninth inning, but could not bring him home. Ryan Lollis reached on a fielder's choice,

stole second and advanced to third when catcher Tomas Morales overthrew the bag. Borden then struck

out Matt Winn and Tyler Horan to send the game into extra innings.

Manager Kyle Haines summoned Reyes Moronta to pitch the 10th and again in the 11th inning. Moronta

punched out five batters and allowed just one hit to keep the game moving into the 12th.

The Squirrels once again had a chance to end the game in the bottom of the 11th inning against Altoona

closer Montana Durapau. Brandon Bednar led off the inning with a single, but was nullified when Chris

Shaw grounded into the Squirrels fourth double play of the night.

The Flying Squirrels action-packed first homestand of the season continues on Tuesday night for Tip of

the Cap Tuesday. The first 1,000 fans (15+) will receive a free Outdoorsman Hat presented by Coca-Cola.

JetHawks Take Wild Series Opener From Giants, 11-7

San Jose's rally falls short; win streak snapped at three games

LANCASTER, CA - The Lancaster JetHawks scored eight runs over the first three innings and then

withstood a furious comeback effort from the Giants to secure an 11-7 victory over San Jose on Monday

evening at The Hangar. In the opener of a three-game series, the Giants rallied from an early 8-1 deficit

to pull within one run only to see Lancaster extend their lead late and hang on for the win. The defeat

snapped San Jose's (3-2) three-game winning streak.

Jalen Miller (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Giants offensively in the

loss. Aramis Garcia (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Bryan Reynolds (2-for-5) added two hits apiece for San Jose.

Giants pitchers issued 10 walks in the game with seven of those baserunners eventually coming home to

score runs.

San Jose enjoyed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Dillon Dobson walked with one out, advanced

to second on Reynolds' groundout and scored when Garcia grounded a single into left. The JetHawks

though would immediately respond with a two-run bottom of the first against Giants starter Matt Krook.

Garrett Hampson led off with a triple into the right field corner before a walk to Forrest Wall. Yonathan

Daza followed with a single to plate Hampson with the tying run while Wall advanced to third on the hit.

Brian Mundell then grounded into a double play bringing home Wall for a 2-1 Lancaster advantage.

The JetHawks then knocked Krook out of the game with a five-run bottom of the second. Wes Rogers

started the inning with a towering solo home run to left center. Krook then walked three straight hitters

- Mylz Jones, Chris Rabago and Wilson Soriano - to load the bases. Hampson was up next and he singled

into center plating Jones and Rabago extending the lead to 5-1. Krook recovered to set down the next

two hitters, but Mundell delivered a two-out, two-run single to make the score 7-1 and prompt a

pitching change.

Lancaster kept the pressure on against Giants reliever David Owen in the bottom of the third as two

singles, a stolen base and an error produced a run for an 8-1 cushion.

San Jose was held off the scoreboard from the second through the fifth innings before breaking through

with a four-run top of the sixth. A walk to Garcia started the inning before a one-out single from Jonah

Arenado. Jose Vizcaino Jr. was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Michael Bernal was up next and he

hit a sharp grounder to third that deflected off the glove of Soriano for an error as Garcia and Arenado

both scored. Following a Johneshwy Fargas strike out, Miller stepped to the plate and belted a double to

deep left plating Vizcaino and Bernal to trim the JetHawks lead to 8-5.

San Jose's comeback effort continued with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Reynolds led off the

inning with a single and immediately scored when the next batter, Garcia, smacked a double into the left

field corner. Gio Brusa's groundout then moved Garcia to third before Arenado drew a walk. Then with

Vizcaino Jr. at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Garcia to come home cutting the Lancaster lead to 8-7

while Arenado, the potential tying run, moved into second. A two-out walk to Bernal would put the go-

ahead run on base, but Fargas grounded out to third to end the inning.

Meanwhile, Owen (4 1/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) cruised through the middle innings out of the

Giants bullpen at one point retiring 11 out of 12 JetHawks hitters. With San Jose only down by one run,

Carlos Diaz (2/3 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) relieved Owen to start the bottom of the seventh and

promptly struck out the first two hitters he faced. However, Diaz then walked three batters in a row to

load the bases and Soriano followed with a double to deep right field to clear the bases. The hit allowed

Lancaster to reclaim control of the contest as they pushed their lead to 11-7.

The Giants managed only one baserunner - Miller's leadoff single in the top of the eighth - over the final

two innings as the JetHawks closed out the game.

Lancaster starter Craig Schlitter (1-0) earned the win after limiting San Jose to one run over the first five

innings. Schlitter allowed four hits, walked two and struck out five.

Krook (0-1) took the loss after he was tagged for seven runs (all earned) on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. The

left-hander, who was making his California League debut, walked four and struck out one.
