ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

The Year 11 Class of 2016 has truly excelled in their achievements. Under a seemingly ever changing world of school measures, they achieved the schools highest ever Progress 8 score of 0.28, up from 0.20 in 2015, and an Attainment 8 score of 59.5, up from 57.8. Over 51% of the pupils achieved the new gold standard of qualifications, the English Baccalaureate, – putting us top of the Borough and over twice the national average. We are so proud of their hard work and the commitment they gave to their studies. None of this would have been possible without the unswerving dedication of our teachers and the support we all received from parents.

Special congratulations must go to the 27 pupils who gained 9 A* or A grades across a range of subjects. At ‘A’ Level, 99.6% of students achieved an A2 award across a range of 29 subjects. 81% achieved the highest grades of A*-C. A special mention must be made of the 14 students who gained the equivalent of 3 grade As or better – well done! Tonight is a night of celebration for our students. They are our greatest asset and our desire for them to succeed in a happy, safe environment underpins our work and provides direction for all that we do. From the age of 11-18 we offer chances for them to become exploratory and creative in their learning. Arden has no limits and we strive every day to improve; tonight is our chance to share our success with you.

PERFORMING ARTS .

Dance Pupils are well catered for with dance forming an important strand of the P.E. curriculum throughout all year groups. Dance within the PE curriculum has been enthused by the male P.E. staff in Tribal Dance through the Haka, Sporting Actions in Dance and Choreography. It has been exciting to see the boys’ enthusiasm for dance both in curriculum time and through our extra-curricular clubs. The Dance Department has continued to provide a wide range of varied activities for all pupils in extra-curricular time. Arden Dance Company, which has been a real success over the past year, offers exciting choreography, and a chance to show real potential. It attracts a wide range of pupils and teaches them contemporary dance, a style that many have not experienced outside of Arden. The biggest development this year is the leadership of dance clubs by the students themselves. Students from higher in the school are leading lower year groups in a range of dance styles and disciplines. Here, participants grow technically and leaders grow in confidence in their choreography. At Arden we have public performances where we have many talented performers showcasing Irish Dance, Ballet, Contemporary, Street and Latin. Our pupils conduct themselves with the upmost professionalism combining excellent technique with outstanding performance quality. Our past pupils are succeeding in dance careers from professional companies to teachers. We wish all of our pupils the best for the future. Drama The Drama Department enjoyed a busy year in 2015-2016, with 3 A Level productions, GCSE plays and 3 drama clubs all performing to parents throughout the year. Year 9 Drama club’s show of Evan Place’s Girls Like That was a courageous production staged in the round and explored the contemporary issue of sexting. This cast of 18 strong actors choreographed a contemporary physical piece that relied heavily upon the ensemble; look out for many of these performers in January 2017 in a production of Blood Brothers. Our trips have included taking 300 Year 7 pupils to the theatre to see a stunning production of Hetty Feather, several visits to the Warwick Arts Centre, Wolverhampton Arena Theatre and the Belgrade Theatre. In April the GCSE drama students showcased their final productions; a wonderful celebration of the performing talents of our Year 11s. Their choices of plays were diverse with comedies such as Teechers, Shakers and Bouncers by Godber, and some striking drama in Lord of the Flies and Punk Rock and Be My Baby. Particularly memorable performances were given by Will Lloyd in the role as William Carlisle whose intense performance of a self-doubting young man built to a shockingly tragic and violent climax and transfixed the audience. Another memorable performance was given by Olivia Saunders as a cocktail waitress in Shakers. Even the examiner shook with laughter at her hilarious ‘audition speech’ - quite a contrast to her current role as Maria in the school production of The Sound of Music. The ensemble performance given by students in Lord of the Flies was particularly successful, with an original and creative physical interpretation of the plane crash and of the gang violence of the boys on the island. Alexia Holman in the role as Jack gave an energetic and courageous performance capturing the wild savagery of the boys as events spiralled out of control. Strong emotional performances were given by many including the cast of Be My Baby where the five female actors had to portray the real life experiences of young unmarried women in the 1960’s whose babies were taken

from them. The students communicated the girls’ relationships with touching realism and sensitivity. This was the last performance from Lucy Munden in the role of Dolores who has previously been seen in Arden productions such as Alice, ‘Little Shop of Horrors and Fame. Lucy is leaving Arden to study Musical Theatre at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts; we wish her well in her new adventures and are looking forward to seeing her career blossom. The students all worked extremely hard on these performances from December, rehearsing lunch times, after school and weekends. Yet again our drama students demonstrated high levels of maturity, professionalism and excellence in achieving polished and engaging pieces of theatre. The Drama Department were exceptionally proud of them all. The school production of The Sound of Music in July was a resounding success. In the role of Maria, Olivia Saunders provided stunning vocals and good interaction with the other characters, creating lovely, intimate scenes with the Mother Superior played by Carmen De Pons. Playing both Mother Superior and Elsa Schraeder, Carmen De Pons excelled, managing to keep her characters separate and engaging, with particularly enjoyable renditions of ‘No Way to Stop It’ and the beautifully sung ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain’. Both Olivia and Carmen interacted very well with Callum Beddoes’ ‘Captain Von Trapp’. Callum performed authoritatively as the stern and forbidding Captain, transitioning nicely to the softer and more romantic character we see as his relationship with his children and Maria flourish. In addition, James Dunbar as Max Detweiler really brought the character to life; expertly delivering all the asides and jokes with great comic timing and joviality; a much-needed drop of humour and light-heartedness in the quickly darkening story. Katie Davie was enchanting as the innocent Liesl, performing a lovely rendition of ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’ and sharing great chemistry and charm with Ben Harley-Mason, who portrayed the smitten yet politically-conflicted Rolf so well. Making up the rest of the Von Trapps; Rachel Evans, Lucy Bugg, Hannah O’Leary, Archie Spittle-Maguire, Georgia Fair and Rosalie Carter; all worked very well together, easily slipping into their roles as the playful younger children and coming together with great vocals and enthusiasm for famous numbers like ‘Do-Re-Mi’ and ‘So Long, Farewell’. A veritable crowd of Nuns, Nazis and Servants supported the leads admirably and certainly filled the group scenes in the Abbey and the Party with hubbub and life in a way that a small cast would struggle to achieve – it was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and energy shared by the students! Music Extra-curricular opportunities in the Music Department have continued to engage and inspire hundreds of our students at Arden. They can take part in over fourteen ensembles during a school week such as Senior Choir, B.A.T.S., Ardenaires, Lower School Band, String Orchestra, Chamber Choir, the CIA, Brass Band and the infamous ukulele ensemble – S.T.R.U.M. The Ardenaires big band and B.A.T.S. Choir also continue to be in great demand, playing at numerous events in and around the Solihull area and, for the first time, have been signed up for the Knowle Fun Run 2017. Throughout the year, 16 extremely talented and dedicated musicians from years 7 to 9 took part in the OSoSic massed orchestra project run by Solihull Music Service. Our students took part in numerous weekend rehearsals in smaller cluster groups to learn a number of extremely challenging orchestral arrangements, culminating in an exciting day of rehearsals and an evening concert at Symphony Hall in an orchestra of over 200 young musicians. To top it all we were also treated to a superb solo performance of Red, White and Blues by Bruno Stain – I wonder how many Year 9 students can say they have performed a solo to a packed house at Symphony Hall? The Upper School Spring Concert took place at Arden and, once again the audience was treated to an incredible standard and range of music, including all of our Upper School ensembles. The concert got off to a great start with an exciting performance of Jurassic Park by the Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Miss Cassells. The Chamber Choir continued the incredibly high standard with their beautiful performance of Songbird. The solo and small ensembles were also astonishing in terms of standard and musicality, including a performance of Clare de Lune by Ben Harley-Mason and an emotional final duet from Lucy Munden and Olivia Saunders. As is now becoming a tradition, the Senior Windband closed the concert with a very substantial and extremely demanding set, which included stunning performances of Selections from Wicked and Les Miserables. As always gifts were shared

and tears were shed as this concert, once again, provided a wonderful way to say goodbye and thank you to those amazing musicians leaving Arden at the end of Years 11 and 13. In March the annual A Level Recital Evening gave the exciting opportunity for an intimate audience of family, friends and staff to experience the quality and exceptional musicianship of our AS and A2 performers. In July the annual school production delivered a truly incredible performance of the Sound of Music. The twenty four piece orchestra rehearsed virtually every Friday night from November onwards to produce a polished rendition of the professional orchestral arrangement. It was a privilege to work with all the members of the cast, leads and chorus alike, who turned in some of the most memorable vocal performances that we have experienced at Arden. The academic year was once again brought to an end by the traditional House Music competition involving a huge range of talented and brave musicians, singers and dancers competing for the final House points of the year. However each year the most striking feature of this musical spectacular is the warmth, encouragement and support shown to all the performers by over five hundred of their peers. We would like to thank all the students (and their parents/taxi drivers) who attend any (or in some cases) most of the ensembles during a busy week at Arden, for their unswerving commitment, dedication and boundless enthusiasm for music making.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS

Sport plays an integral part of school life and personal development for many Arden students. The opportunity to participate in school sport provides pupils with the chance to gain a passion for lifelong participation in exercise and sport as well as important skills such as team work, commitment, leadership and discipline. Whether a student’s goal is elite performance, team spirit or just the enjoyment of participation, the rich range of both curriculum and extra-curricular sporting opportunities provided at Arden ensures all our students can get involved, find their niche and fulfil their potential. Many students here this evening will have experienced the joy of taking part in school sport and the memories will last a lifetime. Arden’s philosophy is based upon participation where all children are welcome to attend extra-curricular clubs to develop and improve their individual skills and enjoy the health and social benefits of physical activity. There are regular ‘friendly fixtures’ and coaching games against children from other schools. The successes at county, regional and national level have also been achieved by many individuals and teams and are a testament to the talent, dedication and devotion that many pupils put into their sport There are many students sat here tonight that will have gained so much from taking part in school sport. Equally many students have also given a huge amount back to the school, with a fantastic level of commitment to training before school, at lunch times, after school and at weekends. There are numerous people who have enabled Arden pupils to gain these levels of excellence including, parents, staff, governors and sport leaders; I know they would like to thank you all for the opportunities you have and I am sure you will continue to provide for students. The year groups present today have achieved some amazing results over the last few years some of which are below: • U18 Football team reaching the last 32 of the National Cup • U16 Football team reaching the last 64 of National Cup • Rugby team reaching the last 16 in the National Natwest Plate • U16 Boys Team Milano Finals 2nd Place • National Boys Gymnastics Champions There have also been numerous district and county successes in a vast amount of sports. Thank you for all of your hard work and good luck
