Many people like going on holiday to places likeItaly or Spain, but Martha prefers to stay at

home. She lives with her parents and two littlebrothers in Lyme Regis in England. Lyme Regis is a town in Dorset in the southwest of England. Dorsetis a special place in England because it is never verycold. In winter it is rainy and often quite windy, but itis almost never below zero. Spring, summer andautumn can be very nice: it doesn’t rain very oftenand it is sunny most of the time. There are even somepalm trees in nearby Devon!

Martha likes Lyme Regis because it is a beautifulplace at the seaside. Young people have many thingsto do there: in summer, they can go swimming, surfing or even diving, and in winter they can playsports in clubs. The town is not very big, but it has gota special atmosphere. It is a historic place with somemonuments from Roman times. It is also famousbecause some authors write about it in their novels, and there are also films about it.

Lyme Regis is always full of tourists from Englandand abroad. Martha loves spending her holidays therebut she doesn’t relax all the time. In summer, whenthere are many visitors, she works as a waitress in a seaside restaurant. In this way she can watch herfavourite scenery all the time.

There are many TV shows aboutyoung people and their problems. We ask two youngsters, Rita andMeg, about their favourite seriesand its main character.

Rita: I think that my favourite series at the moment is GetReal. It is about an American family with two sons and a daughter. The daughter’s name is Megan. I like her charactervery much. She is 17 years old. She has got long, dark brownhair and dark brown eyes. She is quite hard-working but shedoesn’t have plans to study at university. She hasn’t got manyfriends because she is quite shy. I like the series because it isabout real problems in the life of young people. At first it lookslike a comedy, but then it changes into a real drama.

Meg: I must say I prefer comedy to drama. My favourite TVseries is Gilmore Girls. There are two main characters, a single mother and her daughter, a 17-year-old girl calledRory. She is not very tall and has got long brown hair. Rory isa very good student and an ambitious person. She alwaysreads books and works very hard. She hasn’t got manyfriends because she is now in a new school. Rory is quiet andnot very outgoing, but her mother is a real rebel. There are some ordinary sports whichalmost everybody can learn, likesnowboarding or skating. They are alsoperhaps not very risky. But BASE jumpingis one of the extreme sports and it is verydangerous. You jump off a building or a bridge with a parachute. You usuallyopen your parachute as late as possible.

1.2.

BASE jumping began at El Capitan, a 915-metre-high mountain in Yosemite, anAmerican park. In 1978 some peoplejumped from the mountain withparachutes. People jump there today, too. However, a very popular form of thisextreme sport today is jumping not fromthe mountains in the country, but from tallbuildings in cities.

1.3.

Some people BASE jump from 76-metrebuildings. That isn’t very high! You have toopen your parachute very quickly afteryou jump. You have to fall well and watchthe ground. Are there people there? Turnyour parachute and move away. Quickly –you don’t have much time. And are thepolice there?

1.4.

Just because BASE jumping is sodangerous, in the US the police put BASEjumpers in prison. John Vincent of NewOrleans jumped from a tall building in St. Louis. The police were there when hecame down. He went to prison for ninetydays after the jump. But go to France,Norway or Brazil and you can jumpwithout any problems.

1.5.

BASE jumping today is not just a hobby, but an organisation with special offers andbonuses for its members. It started in1981 when Phil Smith and Jean Boenischfounded the US BASE Association. Do youwant to become a member? It’s easy: youhave to do 100 skydives and then you geta BASE number. Phil Smith of Houston,Texas is BASE 1.

1.6.

People say they do BASE jumpingbecause the world is beautiful when yousee it from above. And because it’sdangerous. About one person each yeardies after a jump. BASE jumper RickHarrison broke his legs on a jump. Heshows you his legs and tells you about it.Then he finds a building or a bridge andjumps again!

A Arthur left Sir Kay and quickly went to the church. There wereno longer any knights outside by the stone because they were at thetournament. Arthur climbed down from his horse and went to thestone. He did not read the words on the stone. He took the swordin his hand and pulled. It came out of the stone easily. He ran backto his horse with the sword.

B The sword came out as easily as a knife out of butter. Sir Ector

saw this and took Arthur’s hand. ‘You are my king,’ he said. Arthur

did not understand. What did his father mean? ‘Arthur,’ Sir Ector said

slowly, ‘I love you very much, but I am not really your father. Merlin,

the famous man of magic, brought you to me when you were a small

child.’

C Every knight tried to pull the sword out of the stone. Nobody

could do it – the sword did not come out. The knights pulled and

pulled, but they could not move the sword. Ten knights stayed and

guarded the sword. Others went to invite all the great men in the

country to London for a tournament. They hoped one of those

strong men could pull out the sword.

D Some minutes later, he met Sir Kay and Sir Ector again, and heshowed them the sword. ‘Where did that come from?’, Sir Ectorasked. He knew about the words on the stone. They went back tothe place outside the church, and Sir Ector put the sword in thestone again. ‘Now pull it out,’ he said to Arthur. Arthur pulled it out.

E Then they went to the knights and told them everything. The

knights were angry. They did not think that Arthur was really the

king. So Merlin called all of them to the stone. Arthur put the sword

back into the stone. As the knights watched, he pulled it out easily.

Then the knights believed. Everybody shouted, ‘Arthur is our king!

Arthur is our king!’

F When Arthur was a young man, Merlin and all the knights cameto London. They met in a large church. When they came outside, they saw something strange in front of the church. It was a very bigstone with a great sword in it. The sun shone on the sword and itlooked very strong. On the stone were the words: ‘Only the king cantake the sword from the stone.’

G Sir Ector, the king, came to the tournament with his two sons,Sir Kay and young Arthur. Arthur was now sixteen years old. Theyoung men wanted to fight with the other knights, but Sir Kay didnot have a sword. Arthur was a kind young man. He wanted to help.‘There is a sword in a stone outside a church. I saw it on the wayhere,’ he said. ‘I can go and get it for you.’

Survival holidays in Alaska – a personalstory

On May 6 I set up a base camp on the ice cap and waited for theplane to bring food. For the next four days it snowed and the planedidn’t come. Sometimes I went out for a short ski, but most of the timeI lay silently in my tent, alone with my thoughts.

As the days passed, I grew very anxious. I had no radio and no othermeans of communication. I was almost out of stove fuel, so I couldn’t cook anything. I had some cheese and three packets of crisps. This, I hoped, would be enough for three or four more days. But whatnext?

When I woke up on May 10 it was still snowing and it was very windy.I didn’t know what to do: start walking to the coast in the morning orstay here, on the ice cap. Suddenly I heard something. I couldn’t believemy luck: it was a plane! I ran out of the tent. I waved my arms andshouted, and then I took my sleeping bag and waved it in the air. Whenthe plane began to fly in my direction, I felt tears of joy in my eyes. Thepilot came and went three times and he dropped two boxes of foodevery time. Then the plane disappeared and there was silence all aroundme again. I felt sad, depressed, lost.

On May 11 the weather was good and I knew it was time for me todo something. I packed up my rucksack and began skiing. After two daysthat also involved walking through deep snow and climbing high rocks, I came to the coast. My adventure was over.

1.1. On May 9a) the plane came with food.b) the weather wasn’t good.c) he finally left his tent.d) he didn’t eat anything.

1.2. The author was worried becausea) he couldn’t contact anybody.b) he didn’t know how to cook.c) he had enough food for oneday.d) he couldn’t sleep at all.

1.3. When the author heard the planea) he was on his way to the coast.b) he was shocked.c) he tried to show where he was.d) he started crying.

1.4. The author got ... boxes of food.a) twob) threec) fourd) six

1.5. All in all, the author’s adventurea) made him very ill.b) lasted seven days.c) finished on May 13.d) was rather relaxing.

FFaasshh iioonn ffoo rr tt hhee ffuu ttuu rreeIn four different laboratories across Great Britain scientists arealready working on fashion for the future. Today we visit them andtalk about their ideas.

2.1. First we go to a small university building onthe outskirts of Liverpool. Jocelyn Brown, the head of the department, informs usabout their project: clothes which smell. AsBrown explains, people can save on anti-perspirants and perfume because theclothes produce a nice, fresh aroma.

2.2.

The next place to visit is a charming villageon the coast of Scotland. Our host here isMandy Wilson who manages the project forthe University of Glasgow. Their idea isclothes with a tiny electrical heating systemto keep the wearer warm. When it is hot,you can switch the system off and clothesare cool again!

2.3.

In Wales, scientists are busy with largesheets of paper-like material. They areproducing clothes which the user can paintand decorate any way they like. What’smore, it is possible to wash the clothes andpaint them once again. Mary Smith, thedirector of the project, also stresses thefact that these clothes are environment-friendly.

2.4.

But the truly post-modernist idea of clothingis waiting for us in the capital of England,London. Nick Heldon of Fashion Co.presents us with something which looks likea Roman toga, a set of different belts, and apair of scissors. We put the toga on and cando whatever we like with it: for example, cutit very short, or put a belt on.

So the fashion industry is getting ready toface the future. In the meantime, we shouldtry and earn more because it seems that allthe ideas are rather expensive.

A Switch them on or switch them offB Be an artist and create clothes for othersC Do as the Romans did ... but with a differenceD Buy clothes and save on something elseE Buy them, wash them ... and they still look niceF Be an artist and protect our planet

The brilliant duo, Andy and Larry Wachowski, have got a Polishname but in fact they are American. They were born in 1965(Larry) and 1967 (Andy) and lived in the Polish district inChicago. Their father was a businessman and their mother was a nurse. Both parents loved watching films and spent a fortuneon tickets to drive-in cinemas. Their sons followed theirexample. In the early 199Os, they gave up university and startedwriting film scripts. Nobody wanted to buy them, so the brothersalso had to work as carpenters.

The Wachowski brothers did not find it very easy to start theirfilm career. At first, they only worked on other people’s filmscripts. In the mid-199Os the famous producer, Dino DeLaurentiis, agreed to pay for their first film, Bound. In fact, the brothers tried to sell the idea of Matrix to him too, but hedid not like it. He thought that only a small group of computerfans would like a film like that.

When Bound appeared, the brothers moved to Los Angeles,California, where they still live in their small houses on thebeach. The huge success of Matrix (1999) and Matrix Reloaded(2OO3) did not change their lifestyles at all. They live quiet, personal lives far away from the noise and glitter of Hollywood. What’s more, the brothers still wear casual clothes, most oftenChicago Bulls jerseys and caps. When a Hollywood agent gave thema lot of money to buy good clothes, they spent it all on T-shirtsand baseball caps.

Ben finished his busy day at a restaurant in the centreof Manchester and left for home. It was already late at nightand there were not many people in the streets. Ben walkedquickly towards his home, which was not far from his placeof work.

Suddenly, he heard a noise from a house on his left. Thesound was followed by a loud explosion and, the nextmoment, the house burst into flames. There were horriblesounds all round: windows cracking, walls collapsing. Ben'sfirst reaction was to run away but somehow he couldn't.Instead, he moved even closer and looked into the house. Then he saw him: a small boy in pyjamas struggling toescape from under pieces of furniture and rubble in thedownstairs sitting room. Ben knew what to do. His reactionwas quick. He rushed into the burning house. He couldn'tsee anything and the heat was horrible but he somehowmanaged to find the child and dragged him outside. Therewere some members of the boy's family out there, and Bensimply left the child and went home. It all happened soquickly that the family had no time to thank him.

Now, one year on, Ben has just met the boy and hisfamily. They want to thank him but all he has to say is, 'Ididn't do anything special. It was a natural thing to do.' Thisonly proves that Ben Smithson is a truly ordinary hero.

What kind of shopper are you? We’re asking six different individuals about theirshopping habits, likes and dislikes. Read and decidewhat kind of shopper you are!2.1.

Barry: Generally, I hate shopping. I don’t go shopping for foodbecause my parents do it once a week. I don’t shop for clothesbecause it’s so boring! If I need something, I just ask my motheror my brother. The only thing I buy from time to time is a chocolate bar.

2.2.

Lena: I must say I just love shopping, especially for clothes. I canspend long hours walking around the shops and looking forsomething nice. I also love trying things on, and perhaps notbuying them at all! The best thing I’ve bought recently is thisskirt. Isn’t it lovely?

2.4.

Madge: Do I like shopping? It depends. I like shopping for foodbecause I love cooking. It’s great to choose fresh vegetables andplan what dish to prepare from them. But I don’t like shoppingfor clothes. I never find anything special. Shops are full of uselessclothes, really!

2.5.

David: I can go shopping for anything, but only if my friends gowith me. I like asking people for advice, talking and laughingtogether. But if I’m alone, shopping is a nightmare. I can neverfind what I want and then I usually call somebody and ask themto come to the rescue!

2.6.

Carol: If you ask me where I buy things, I usually say, ‘Not here!’.I’ve got my favourite shops in many countries across Europe.I always buy bags and shoes in Italy, clothes in France and cars inGermany. But I shop for fruit and vegetables just round thecorner, because they are the best.

Do you believe in fairies?Well, a friend of mine, Ron Black, probably does. Hehas just published a book on fairies and their secretlives. In his book he is trying to prove that fairiesexist and live everywhere around us. There aredifferent types of fairies. Some of them are good andthey always help people. Other fairies are very hardto please. When they get angry, they can even steala human child or make you very ill.

Fairies live not just under flowers and leaves ingardens, but also in our homes. There was a customin some countries to leave something to eat anddrink in the corners where people thought the fairieswere the most active. Today, as Ron writes, peopleforget to feed fairies properly. That’s why there are somany wars and conflicts in the world.

But does Ron really believe in fairies? Has he everseen one? When I ask such questions, he onlysmiles. Then he takes out a plan of his house andshows me where they live in his place: brownies inthe bathroom, goblins in the kitchen and pixies in thebedroom upstairs. So who knows? The next time I’vegot a headache, I will remember to leave some milkin the corner of my bathroom. ☺

3.1. Ron Black wrote his book toa) describe one typical fairy.b) prove the existence of fairies.c) characterise good fairies.d) detail the bad luck brought by some fairies.

3.2. The old custom shows thata) fairies in the past were more active than today.b) people in the past weren’t very serious.c) wars happen when fairies are hungry.d) people once believed in fairies.

3.3. In Ron’s homea) there are three types of fairies.b) brownies are the most active.c) one type of fairy lives downstairs.d) the fairies want a lot of food.

3.4. The author’s final comment shows thata) she has always believed in fairies.b) she doesn’t want to hurt Ron.c) her headache is really strong.d) she thinks Ron may be right.
