SECTION I

INTRODUCTION

1. Scope

This manual lists spares and repair parts; specialtools; special test, measurement, and diagnosticequipment (TMDE), and other special supportequipment required for performance of directsupport, and general support maintenance of theAN/MSC–31A. It authorizes the requisitioningand issue of spares and repair parts as indicatedby the source and maintenance codes.

2. General

This Repair Parts and Special Tools List is dividedinto the following sections:

a. Section II. Repair Parts List. A list of sparesand repair parts authorized for use in the per-formance of maintenance, The list also includesparts which must be removed for replacement ofthe authorized parts. Parts lists are composed offunctional groups in numeric sequence, with theparts in each group listed in figure and itemnumber sequence.

b. Section III. Special Tools List. Not applicable.

c. Section IV. National Stock Number and PartNumber Index. A list, in National item identifica-tion number (NIIN) sequence, of all Nationalstock numbers (NSN) appearing in the listings,followed by a list, in alphameric sequence, of allpart numbers appearing in the listings. Nationalstock numbers and part numbers are cross-

referenced to each illustration figure and itemnumber appearance.

3. Explanation of Columns

a. Illustration. This column is divided as follows:(1) Figure number. Indicates the figure num-

ber of the illustration on which the item is shown.(2) item number. The number used to iden-

tify item called out in the illustration.

b. Source, Maintenance, and Recoverability(SMR) Codes.

(1) Source code. Source codes indicate themanner of acquiring support items for mainte-nance, repair, or overhaul of end items. Source

codes are entered in the first and second positionsof the Uniform SMR Code format as follows:

Code DefinitionPA—Item procured and stocked for anticipated

or known usage.XD—A support item that is not stocked. When

required, item will be procured throughnormal supply channels.

NOTE

Cannibalization or salvage may be usedas a source of supply for any itemssource coded above except those codedXA and aircraft support items as re-stricted by AR 700–42.

(2) Maintenance code. Maintenance codes areassigned to indicate the levels of maintenanceauthorized to USE and REPAIR support items.The maintenance codes are entered in the thirdand fourth positions of the Uniform SMR Codeformat as follows:

(a) The maintenance code entered in thethird position will indicate the lowest maintenancelevel authorized to remove, replace, and use thesupport item. The maintenance code entered inthe third position will indicate one of the follow-ing levels of maintenance:

Code Application/ExplanationO—Support item is removed, replaced, used at the

organizational level.F—Support item is removed, replaced, used at

the direct support level.H—Support item is removed, replaced, used at

the general support level.

(b) The maintenance code entered in thefourth position indicates whether the item is to berepaired and identifies the lowest maintenancelevel with the capability to perform complete re-pair (i.e., all authorized maintenance functions).This position will contain one of the followingmaintenance codes:

Code Application /ExplanationO—The lowest maintenance level capable of com-

plete repair of the support item is the or-ganizational level.

F—The lowest maintenance level capable of com-plete repair of the support item is thedirect support level.

H—The lowest maintenance level capable of com-plete repair of the support item is thegeneral support level.

Z—Nonreparable. No repair is authorized.

(3) Recoverability code. Recoverab i l i tycodes are assigned to support items to indicate thedisposition action on unserviceable items. The re-coverability code is entered in the fifth position ofthe Uniform SMR Code format as follows:

Recoverabilitycodes DefinitionZ—Nonreparable item. When unserviceable,

condemn and dispose at the Level indicatedin position 3.

O—Reparable item. When uneconomically repar-able, condemn and dispose at organiza-tional level.

F—Reparable item. When uneconomically repar-able, condemn and dispose at the directsupport level.

H—Reparable item. When uneconomically repar-able, condemn and dispose at the generalsupport level.

c. National Stock Number. Indicates the Na-tional stock number assigned to the item and willbe used for requisitioning purposes.

d. Part Number. Indicates the primary numberused by the manufacturer (individual, company,firm, corporation, or Government activity), whichcontrols the design and characteristics of the itemby means of its engineering drawings, specifica-tions, standards, and inspection requirements toidentify an item or range of items.

NOTEWhen a stock-numbered item is requisi-tioned, the repair part received may havea different part number than the partbeing replaced.

e. Federal Supply Code for Manufacturer(FSCM). The FSCM is a 5-digit numeric codelisted in SB 708–42 which is used to identify themanufacturer, distributor, or Government agency,etc.

f. Description. Indicates the Federal item nameand, if required, a minimum description to identifythe item.

g. Unit of Measure (U/M). Indicates the stand-ard of the basic quantity of the listed item as usedin performing the actual maintenance function.This measure is expressed by a two-character al-phabetical abbreviation (e.g., ea, in, pr, etc).When the unit of measure differs from the unitof issue, the lowest unit of issue that will satisfythe required units of measure will be requisi-tioned.

h. Quantity Incorporated in Unit. Indicates thequantity of the item used in the breakout shownon the illustration figure, which is prepared fora functional group, subfunctional group, or anassembly.

5. How to Locate Repair Parts

a. When National stock number or part numberis unknown.

(1) First. Using the table of contents, deter-mine the functional group within which the itembelongs. This is necessary since illustrations areprepared for functional groups and listings aredivided into the same groups.

(2) Second. Find the illustration covering thefunctional group to which the item belongs.

(3) Third. Identify the item on the illustra-tion and note the illustration figure and itemnumber of the item.

(4) Fourth. Using the Repair Parts Listing,

find the figure and item number noted on the illus-tration.

b. When National stock number or part numberis known.

(1) First. Using the Index of National StockNumbers and Part Numbers, find the pertinentNational stock number or part number. This indexis in NIIN sequence followed by a list of partnumbers in alphameric sequence, cross-referencedto the illustration figure number and item number.

(2) Second. After finding the figure and itemnumber, locate the figure and item number in therepair parts list.
