SERVICE FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD July 5, 2020

9:00 am The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

WE GATHER IN GOD’S NAME

AN EXTENDED PRELUDE FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND

[Notes on the Prelude-- July 4, is not the anniversary of a great battle, it doesn't mark the signing of a peace treaty, it is not the date of a military coup. We count our independence as the date that debate and deliberation concluded with the representative delegations signing our founding document proclaiming: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...”]

PRELUDE Please use this time to prepare your inward spirit for the worship of God.

†All who are able, please stand. Bold print—all respond.

THE CHURCH BELL RINGS GREETING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

†ENTRANCE OF THE WORD AND THE LIGHT †GATHERING SONG ......................................................... Be Exalted, O God

CCLI#1622560

I will give thanks to Thee, O Lord, among the people. I will sing praises to Thee among the nations.

For Thy steadfast love is great, is great to the heavens; and Thy faithfulness, Thy faithfulness to the clouds.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; Let Thy glory be over all the earth.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Thy glory be over all the earth.

†CALL TO WORSHIP Come to me, Jesus says. All who are weary, come to me. And you, who carry heavy loads, come to me. For I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Let us draw near to Jesus, whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light.

†HYMN NO. 611 .............................................. Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee CCLI#1622560

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love! Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun

above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt

away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

All thy works with joy surround thee; earth and heaven reflect thy rays;

Stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing

sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in thee.

Mortals, join the happy chorus which the morning stars began. Love divine is reigning o’er us, joining all in heaven’s plan. Ever

singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife. Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.

CALL TO CONFESSION God upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. Therefore let us confess our sin with every confidence that we will be lifted up.

UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, we confess to you and to each other that we are tired and weighed down by the mistakes we have made, even in our closet relationships with our friends, our spouses, and our family. We fill our lives with comfort and convenience, distractions that consume our energy and time. We chase after things that will not satisfy the hunger in our souls. In this season, we are paralyzed by fear of the unknown; we are anxious about what tomorrow or what next week will bring. Free us from the yokes that bind us and draw us near to you, until we learn to walk with Christ. We give these burdens to you, mindful of Jesus’ promise that he will give us rest.

†HYMN NO. 475 .................................... Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing CCLI#1622560

Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.

Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;

Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love!

Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I’m come; And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God;

He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be! Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to

thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;

Here’s my heart; O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above. SERMON ..................................................................... “Great Love Stories”

David R. Witt, Pastor

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS OFFERTORY His Yoke Is Easy ......................................... Arr. Ritter

[Notes on the Offertory—R.E. Hudson authored the text and composed the tune for this little known hymn just before the Civil War. The title and refrain reference Matthew 11:30 but the verses paraphrase Psalm 23. The melody seems a bit old fashioned but the message is timeless.]

WE GO OUT IN GOD’S NAME

†HYMN NO. 182 .............................................I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say CCLI#1622560

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest, Lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast.”

I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give The living water, thirsty one, stoop down and drink and live.”

I came to Jesus, and I drank of that lifegiving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s light, look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright.” I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; and in

that light of life I’ll walk till traveling days are done.

†CHARGE AND BLESSING †CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE NO. 69 (Refrain) ..................... Here I Am, Lord

CCLI#1622560

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

†POSTLUDE Epilogue ......................................................... Martin [Notes on the Postlude – It would be a stretch to call this organ piece a song. There are only snatches of melody scattered through semi-organized clusters of mostly dissonant chords. But I like it, and it really showcases the rich pedal notes.]

CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED TOMORROW Please note: The Church Office will be closed for the Independence Day holiday.

“I am the resurrection and the life,” says the Lord. “Those who believe in me shall live, even though they die, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.” John 11:25-26
