Nurturing good four-legged citizensAs a dog owner, you are responsible for looking after and training your best friend in how to be a good four-legged citizen. Understanding and observing local dog regulations is vital to your role.
This brochure outlines the dog regulations pertaining to major township areas across Surf Coast Shire and provides a series of maps showing the designated off leash, timeshare and no dogs allowed zones in each town.
Looking after the littlies – and othersTo ensure children’s safety and comfort, dogs are not allowed in public playgrounds, as indicated on the maps by . They are however allowed in the surrounding off leash areas marked on the maps with .
Fenced dune and vegetation areas are also off limits and, while the regulations only apply to township areas denoted on the maps, other areas (eg national parks) may be subject to similar restrictions.

Looking after your best friendTo ensure your dog can be easily identified and returned if it strays:
1. Register it with Council, and
2. Get your vet to microchip it.
Under Victorian law, all dogs (and cats) registered for the first time must be microchipped. This entails implanting a tiny, grain-sized computer chip, containing a unique ID number, under the skin. The chip is inert, has no battery and uses no energy but can be scanned to identify your dog. It lasts the dog’s lifetime.
It is also advisable to have your dog sterilised (unless intended for breeding).
Looking after your hip pocketAs a dog owner, you can be fined for:
• not registering your dog
• walking your dog in a prohibited area
• allowing your dog to wander at large
• not having your dog on a leash when it should be
• failing to pick up after your dog, and/or
• not carrying a doggy-do bag or container and leash.
What do the symbols mean?
Within these areas, dogs are allowed off leash at all times, provided they are kept under effective control.
1. Dog to be immediately controllable by voice commands
2. Dog to always be within close proximity to owner
3. Prevent dogs from approaching people or other dogs unless invited. If in doubt place your dog back on lead out of respect and harmony for all.
Within these areas dogs are allowed off leash except when organised events are occurring or being prepared for. In this instance dogs must be on leash, provided they are under effective control.
Dogs are only allowed with the following times and conditions:
9am–7pm: No Dogs allowed (except on defined paths and on a leash).
7pm–9am: Dogs allowed in these areas off leash wbut under effective control.
Outside the active timeshare zone dates: Dogs are allowed off leash but under effective control.
In these areas dogs are not allowed, with the exception of defined pathways, where they must be on a leash.
Note: Includes all fenced dune or vegetation areas and playgrounds.

Keeping our beaches cleanHelp your dog to keep our beaches clean and protect our sensitive marine environment by picking up its doggy-do, rather than leaving it to wash out to sea or for the flies to transfer to someone’s picnic. Carry several bags or containers with you and dispose of used ones in a rubbish bin.
