HIGHLIGHTS 2012 ALUMNI-STUDENT CONVENTION BANQUET

Dean Charles J. Goodacre welcomed a capacity alumni audience to the banquet of the 53rd annual Alumni-Student Convention held February 9 in the main ballroom of the San Bernardino Hilton. Assisting him for the evening was Dr. Steven Morrow, who emceed the evening’s introductions of the honored classes and 95 year old featured speaker Louis Zamperini, whose story is told in a book by Laura Hillenbrand entitled, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.

Class of 1962

The year 1962 was a very good year! • The average cost of: -Gasoline -- 28 cents gallon -A dozen eggs -- 32 cents -New car -- $3,000 -Monthly rent -- $100 -New house -- $12,500.• Golfer Jack Nicklaus, age 21,

made his first professional appearance, coming in 50th

• The Los Angeles Dodgers played their first game at Dodger Stadium, and lost, to the Cincinnati Reds

• Tony Bennett recorded what is probably his most famous song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” and 50 years later he and the song are still going strong.

• On Sunday, June 3, at the Redlands Bowl, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry graduated the now famous

class of 1962 and most of them are still going strong!

The Class of 1962 had 56 members and 32 of the living members, as well as 32 family members, attended the banquet. Some of the class had interesting work experiences before entering dental school. Listed on their applications were jobs like machinist, farmer, banker, interpreter, dairy owner, physical therapist, analytical chemist, truck driver, and even a can inspector. Two of the class are brothers, two are from Norway, and at least eight produced future alumni of the School of Dentistry. Twelve members of this class are now deceased:

• Carroll Lee Bright• C. Eugene Chrowl• Earl William Collard• Howard W. Conley• Victor Elloway• John Erno Estey• Johan Furuland• Kenneth J. Mertz• Estol Cleo Pruett• Miles Eugene Scott• Roy C. Wilkin, Jr.• Henry A. Williams

Presentation of the Class Gift

Dr. Don Beglau presented a check for $411,434.85 as a class gift to Dr. Charles Goodacre. The check represents an estate gift, the bal-ance of the Class of 1962 fund, and gifts from class members to School of Dentistry funds during 2011.

States Army. Following discharge from active duty, the Emmerson family moved back to California. Bill graduated from La Sierra University with a bachelor’s degree in history and political science. Following graduation he moved to Washington D.C. He studied public administration at American University while working as an aide for Congressman Jerry Pettis. Bill eventually found his way back to California when he joined the staff of the assembly republican minority leader in Sacramento, W. Craig Biddle. While working with Assemblyman Biddle, Bill continued his postgraduate studies at California State University, Sacramento. About this time a life-changing moment occurred and Bill decided it was time to prepare himself for a “real job.” He applied, and was accepted at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, graduating with his DDS degree in 1980 and his master’s in orthodontics in 1982. Following completion of his dental education, Bill established an orthodontic practice in Hemet which he maintained for 26 years until the “political bug” bit him again. In 2004, he was elected to the California State Assembly representing citizens of District 63 in the counties of Riverside and San Bernardino for six years. In 2010, having reached term limits in the Assembly, Bill campaigned, and was elected to the State Senate representing Senate District 37, Riverside County, the largest Senate district in California. Assemblyman and Senator Emmerson has been, and will

Distinguished Alumnus

The distinguished alumnus of the year recipient for 2012 is Senator William J. Emmerson. William was born in Oakland, California the year after his father, Clinton Emmerson, graduated from dental school at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco. After graduation the family moved to Georgia where his father served as a dentist on active duty in the United

by the fact that three out of four years passed without the calendar actually setting a day aside for her to celebrate. One year they set her alarm clock to go off at midnight between the 28th and March 1 so that she could at least enjoy the momentary recognition, if without proper celebration. When we asked Dr. Lisa Kim’s office staff how they celebrate they said last year they chose February 28th, which fell on a Monday. Dr. Kim doesn’t usually work Tuesdays. This year they will have a proper celebration on the 29th when it falls on a Wednesday. Melyssa Ankrum says she doesn’t like having a birthday that only shows up once every four years on the calendar. She added that celebrating on the 1st makes the occasion less personal. “It’s not really my day and no one really knows your birthday” she said. In fact she added, if you’re on Facebook, you don’t even get birthday greetings three years out of four because the date doesn’t show up on the Facebook calendar those years. “But I hope this year will be different,” Ankrum said expectantly. “I hope we can go out of town.” But, with small kids that could be a challenge for this mother of three aged five and younger. We like birthdays and think they should be honored. It is Dean Charles J. Goodacre’s custom to send birthday greetings to all current members of the Dean’s Circle. This year he had the added pleasure of extending personal greetings to a slightly larger group, these sometime celebrants who only get recognized every four years.

continue to be, a friendly voice in Sacramento for health care in California. He has authored legislation that has significantly impacted both health care providers and recipients over the past eight years. He has received numerous awards from state law enforcement and health care organizations. Emcee for the evening, Dr. Morrow concluded his remarks by stating, “It is a privilege to add one more award to the list by presenting the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry 2012 Distinguished Alumnus award to Senator Bill Emmerson.”

ONCE IN FOUR

The World Cup,the Winter Olympics, the Summer Olympics, a Presidential Election, and Leap Year all happen every four years. So do the birthdays of Genna Molnar, DDS ’89, Lisa Kim, DDS ’06, Melyssa Ankrum, BS ’04, Robert F. Smith, DDS ’82, Joan Goodwin, BS ’74, Ron Zirkle, DDS ’73 and Ulf Wikesjo, a graduate in ’88 from an advanced education program. Out of more than 6,000 graduates, only seven have birthdays that fall on the illusive 29th of February. Birthdays are a very personal thing, so when they occur officially only once every four years, we thought we’d find out how they might be different for some of these special folks.

Joan Goodwin, said that she typically celebrates on the 28th but she remembers once that a 72 year-old family friend shared her celebration. She

was technically age 2 and he was 18. Goodwin also recounted that her academy friends were intrigued

for the scholarship before the banquet. She will, no doubt, be anxious to see the fund grow rather quickly so the first scholarship can be awarded. Will she be calling . . . probably! “If I’d known retirement would be so much fun,” quipped Joni as she was presented with some special gifts, “I’d have retired long ago!” In keeping with her deepest desire for a gift of a face-lift, Joni was presented with one . . . on a manikin dressed as superwoman! She was also given a tierra as she is indeed “a princess.” Anticipating photos with Joni and her twin, funds were then raised as individuals made pledges in support of the scholarship fund. In case you missed all the fun, you can still have a significant part in honoring Joni by making a gift for the Joni Stephens Scholarship Endowment. Joni, on your well-deserved retirement, best wishes to you and Ron, on the golf course or wherever.

JONI STEPHENSRETIRES

The occasion of this years’ Dental Hygiene Banquet provided an additional opportunity and reason for celebration -- a retirement party. Joni Stephens, a long time and much beloved faculty member, who has stepped away from dental education. The banquet provided many with the consummate opportunity to extend thanks and best wishes to Joni. Joni earned the respect of national organizations, Loma Linda University, and School of Dentistry colleagues throughout her academic career. She earned 2004 LLU Alumna of the Year; and LLUSD Dental Hygiene Alumna of the Year 1994. In 2007 she was awarded the prestigious LLUSD Teacher of the Year Award which was preceded by the Zapara Award for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence in 1996. In 2011, she received the LLUSD Distinguished Research Award. She is a member of two honor societies—Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the dental honor society, and Sigma Phi Alpha, the dental hygiene honor society. Contributions of Professor Stephens are characterized by her inspiration, collaboration, and her 40 years of dedicated service. “My class is so excited about my retirement,” quipped Joni as she was being honored at the banquet. “They know I won’t be calling them each year to ask for money!” Little did Joni know her class had another plan. They established the “Joni Stephens Dental Hygiene Scholarship Endowment” and raised a good amount

pro·cras·ti·nate [proh-kras-tuh-neyt] 1. To defer action; delay: to procrastinate until an opportunity is lost.

Nothing causes procrastination quite as much as facing the preparation of an estate plan. Are you going to use a will or a trust to eventually transfer your assets to family and others? Either way, you need a plan. If you don’t develop your own plan, the state you live in has one for you. And, you might not — no, you probably will not — like the plan the state has for you. So, let’s get started. One of your first steps is to identify your assets that may eventually be passed along to others. The most

noxious part of starting the process is gathering a list of things that should be included in your plan. We’ve done something to

make that easier for you. Go online to llusdlegacy.org, and click on “Plan Your Will.” This is a very useful online tool with short video segments to help you gather information to give to your attorney. Once you create your account, you can begin to enter your major assets such as real estate, retirement accounts, investment and bank accounts, etc. Did we say this account is secure? Yes it is, at the highest level. Once you have created your inventory online, you can print a summary to share with your attorney. This summary will give your attorney information to help you determine the best overall

estate plan for your situation. You’ll also need a plan to transfer financial assets, a plan for a health care proxy, and a plan to manage your financial affairs when you are no longer able to do so. While you’re online, browse through some of the other tools and information. We think you’ll find it very helpful. Should you need help with any of this information, please don’t hesitate to call. We’re here to help you, including how you can remember the School of Dentistry in your plans. Contact the Office of Development at (909) 558-4754 or by e-mail [email protected].

mission so it would remain utmost in our thoughts as young people are educated at the School of Dentistry and as we serve our community.” At first hesitant about the public recognition their gift would receive, Dr. Corbett and his wife were delighted to learn it has inspired others to do likewise. Among those attending the unveiling were Dr. & Mrs. Daniel Newbold who suggested that a similar sculpture should be located in a prominent place in the School of Dentistry. in 1992, and his wife, Melodee, are sponsoring a similar glass sandblast sculpture of the Good Samaritan which will be placed in the main lobby of the School of Dentistry. The sculpture will serve as a reminder to students, faculty, patients, and other visitors of the importance of compassionate service to mankind.

Good Samaritan, cont’d from page 1his work at Great Britain’s Guildford Cathedral, and for a recent work on campus representing Jesus as the healer of the woman who touched His robe. The well-known story of “a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho” who fell afoul of robbers is based on the story recounted in Luke 10:30 -- 37. It has become a symbol and a reminder of the University’s motto “to make man whole.” Dr. Corbett explained their gift by stating, “It was our goal, through this beautiful piece, to provide a gentle reminder of our

DEAN’S CIRCLE

The following 373 individuals have met the requirements for Dean’s Circle membership for 2012 (an annual gift of $1,500 or more – for students an annual gift of $150, and for new graduates $150 more each year until annual gifts total $1,500). In addition to this very attractive lapel pin, Dean’s Circle members for 2012 again receive a voucher for one continuing education course offered by Loma Linda University School of Dentistry and a Certificate of Membership suitable for framing. Dean’s Circle members were invited to the Dean’s Reception in the lobby of the School of Dentistry. More than 100 members were able to view the new Alumni Class Wall Panels in the hallway to the right of the waiting area. Dean’s Circle members have received an invitation to the Dean’s Circle Dinner, May 3, 2012, at the Summit House Restaurant (Fullerton) in conjunction with the California Dental Association Annual Convention.

VIP Cookbook

It’s been 25 years since a group of dental wives published the results of their labor of love in the form of the Very Innovative Parties (VIP) Cookbook. An editorial committee tested and combined submissions from more than 220 dental wives and friends who submitted recipes with party entertainment ideas for the famous red covered volume. What distinguished this volume from similar projects was more than 100 pages of table decoration and theme party ideas to complement the 280 pages of recipes. Some recipes even provided proportions for groups of 10, 50, and even 100. Just as no book can be judged by its cover, some recipes cannot be judged by mere ingredients. The editors added their own comments from time to time. Who could resist a recipe with the admonition,“don’t overdose on these” or “this will be prove you’re a great cook.” As a testimony to the enduring tastes and flavors in this book, copies can still be purchased at the University’s Campus Bookstore ($20.99) or on Amazon.com. Originally the book was intended to advance philanthropic support for dental missions. That purpose, too has endured the decades.

NEWS NOTES

• In recognition of his outstanding professional journey at international levels disseminating teachings in Implant Dentistry and his contributions to dentistry in Mexico, Dr. Jaime L. January 22, 2012. The event provided a record total of $45,455 in dental services. Procter & Gamble Company’s subsidiaries, Crest and Oral-B, continue to support Clinic With A Heart, through their dental science liaison manager Desi Nuckolls, by funding the 500 custom t-shirts for volunteers, as well as contributing $1,000 for the needy kids fund and $250 for toothbrushes and toothpaste.

• For the first time in several years, the International Association of Student Clinicians Competition (SCADA), held during the annual American Dental Association meetings, did not convene on Saturday — a change that enabled Vanessa Browne, Class of 2012, to present in Las Vegas on Monday, October 10, 2011, a research project completed with Mike Flewelling, and Mark Wierenga, also from the Class of 2012. This team’s project won second prize, awarded in a competition with 76 student researchers from all American (and 17 international) dental schools. They took first place in the clinical category at the California Dental Association meetings in May. Neal Johnson, DDS ‘08, suggested the research topic,“Sterilization of Used and Contaminated Implant Healing Abutments and Impression Copings: A Cost Benefit Analysis,” because no scientific evidence had been produced on this practice that many dentists have begun to employ. “We worked morning, noon, and night for two weeks to design the protocol and complete the research,” Vanessa reported. To assist them, Ray Aprecio, Sr., research associate, Center for Dental Research, and Alisa Wilson, safety and infection control coordinator, facilitated processing the research material through sterilization. Other mentors who gave advice include: Yiming Li, DDS; Paul Richardson, DDS ‘72; Dean Charles Goodacre, DDS ’71; and Nikola Angelov, DDS. Vanessa comments with conviction, “Loma
