Cornplanter Indians Await Action on Road Work Funds
Harrisburg, Pa. (A.P.) — Even the Indians are awaiting the outcome of the battle over taxes in the 1951 Pennsylvania Legislature.
Time was when the Red man would hold a powwow and go on the warpath for less than what he wants right now.
The Indians in this case are the Cornplanters, descendants of the savage Senecas of Six Nations fame.
They live on an 860-acre reservation along the upper Allegheny River near the New York State border. The land was granted them by the State's General Assembly in 179f.
What the Cornplanters want now is an appropriation for road repair in the woodlands leading to their small farms and homes.
Sen. Lfroy E. Chapman (R-Warren), chairman of the important Senate Appropriations Committee, introduced a bill months afo for $600 to do the job.
The donation, though minute in comparison with huge amounts set aside for other matters, has won committee approval and been given two readings. However, as with other appropriations measures, the Senate has postponed final action until the tax and fiscal situation is cleared up.
The Legislature, in its longest session since Colonial days, has been bogged- down for months on the question of what taxes—if any—are needed to meet Gov. John S. Fine's $2,218,000,000 budget for 1951-53. Both houses now are recessed until Dec. 10.
