Types of

paragraphs

Page 9: On this day

There are several types of paragraphs. We will explain to you six of them.DescriptiveNarrativeExplanatoryPersuasiveIntroductoryFinal

TYPES OH PARAGRAPHS

Page 10: On this day

Descriptive paragraphs do exactly what you think they do; they describe a person, an object, or a scene in detail.

Example:Fish are slimy, scaly things which swim in the water. They have protruding eyes on either side of their flat, bulbous bodies, which reminds me of keyholes on either side of a door. Then, they have these rubber-like fins on the top, sides, and back of their bodies, which helps them to swim gracefully through the ocean.

Narrative paragraphs tell about an event or series of events, usually in chronological order. Most short stories and newspaper articles are examples of narrative writing.

Example:One day, my daughter was really sick. She woke up feeling very tired and had a very sour stomach. She did not want to eat her breakfast, and she did not eat lunch. She would not drink anything.

Expository paragraphs give information. They explain a subject, give directions, or show how something happens. In expository writing, linking words like first, second, then, and finally are usually used to help readers follow the ideas.

Example:Chocolate cake with vanilla/almond frosting provides a tasty treat for any occasion. Follow the directions for making any flavor of chocolate cake. While the cake bakes in the oven, prepare a box of vanilla frosting mix added with roasted and buttered almond slivers.

Persuasive paragraphs are used to share an opinion about a particular subject. Writers of persuasive paragraphs try to convince readers to agree with the opinions in the paragraphs and, sometimes, to take action.

Example:Going on amusement park rides is one of the safest forms of recreation. According to the International Association of Amusement Park Attractions, you are more likely to be injured when you play sports, ride a horse, or even ride a bicycle. Statistics show the occurrence of death to be approximately one in 250 million riders.

Introductory paragraphs show different ways of getting your reader involved in your essay. The introductory paragraph should also include the thesis statement, a kind of mini-outline for the paper: it tells the reader what the essay is about.

Example:Stephen King, creator of such stories as Carrie and Pet Sematary, stated that the Edgar Allan Poe stories he read as a child gave him the inspiration and instruction he needed to become the writer that he is. Poe, as does Stephen King, fills the reader's imagination with the images that he wishes the reader to see, hear, and feel.

Final paragraphs (the concluding paragraph) The last paragraph, also know as the conclusion, should make your essay sound finished. The concluding paragraph typically has two parts:1. The summary statement is one or two sentences

which restate the thesis in a fresh way to reinforce the essay's main idea.

2. The clincher is a final thought which should create a lasting impression on the reader.

Example:"Thick darkness," "thread of the spider," and "vulture eye" are three images that Poe used in "The Tell-Tale Heart" to stimulate a reader's senses. Poe wanted the reader to see and feel real life. He used concrete imagery rather than vague abstract words to describe settings and people.
