B o o k I t ! Karen Treiger Presents
My Soul is Filled with Joy: A Holocaust Story
Wednesday January 29 / 5 ~ 8 pm $6.24 includes light supper; presentation at 6 pm; no-host wine bar
For tickets go to www.brownpapertickets.com or call 800-838-3006 and ask for the Karen Treiger event. The cost of $6.24 includes a small service fee. The front desk will NOT be able to take reservations or payments.
The award-winning book My Soul Is Filled with Joy tells the story of author Karen Treiger’s in-
laws, Holocaust survivors Sam and Esther Goldberg. Karen’s presentation is much more than an
author talk; it is an amazing multimedia, multilayered, multi-generational interactive story of
family, survival, love, hope, and luck. Treiger’s book is also the story of her present-day journey of
discovery as she traveled to Poland to retrace Sam and Esther’s steps and reconnect with relatives
and the descendants of the families who helped Sam and Esther hide.
Sam was one of approximately 65 people to survive the Treblinka Death Camp. After escaping and
fleeing to the nearby forest, he met Esther, who had been hiding there for more than a year with the
help of two gentile families. A former editor-in-chief of the New York University Law Review,
Treiger retired from her 18-year Seattle law practice in 2015 to research and write this true and
harrowing story. The book won the PNWA Nancy Pearl Books Award Best memoir and the bronze
medal in world history from the Independent Publishers Association.
Books will be available for purchase and signing.

REMEMBRANCE —Mary Van Couvering October 18, 1939 ~ October 26, 2019
Sunday January 12 / 3 ~ 5 pm
Join us as we gather to remember Mary, share stories, and honor her
legacy at the Center. Listen to her favorite musician Steven King
(international fingerstyle guitar champion) play the music she loved; enjoy
light snacks, and maybe treat yourself to a glass of wine.
You are invited to speak at the gathering or write your thoughts and place them in the box
in the lobby to be read that day. Will we have time to thank her for all she did — from
being a Board member, chairing events like Fido Fete & Santa Breakfast, maintaining the
membership database, being a friend to all and much more? Probably not, but we will do
Mary proud. She was also known for her love of dogs and ladybugs.
Please RSVP at the front desk or call 535-0803 so we can plan refreshments.
A spring Celebration of Life is scheduled Saturday April 25, 2020 at Manito Park.

A Note from Lisa Happy New Year! I hope 2020 (2019 seemed to slip by) brings you all health, prosperity and most
of all happiness. Santa had a wonderful time at the Center for the Santa Breakfasts as did everyone
who attended. I have it on good authority from Santa that none on you were on his naughty list…
well perhaps a little naughty…keeps Santa on his toes! Thank you to everyone who helped with the
Santa breakfasts. We had a record attendance and it is clearly becoming a Spokane tradition to come
here in December. A special thank you to Lynn Terry for her work coordinating this event.
Our December lunch was also a huge hit with our special guest K9 Officer Haywire and his handler
Officer David Stone from the Spokane Police Department. You, our generous members, donated
enough money to raise funds for a bullet proof vest for Haywire and another SPD K9. The Spokane
Police Department and the K9 Unit are overwhelmed with the generosity of our members. Chief
Meidl, SPD said 'A HUGE thank you to the Southside Community Center for raising funds to
purchase a ballistic vest for K9 Haywire! K9 Officer Stone will now have a very important piece of
equipment to help keep Haywire safer on the many dangerous calls they respond to. Thank you,
Southside Community Center, and all those who donated!'
For more information and updates on this story and upcoming events, don’t forget to like us on
Facebook to hear more about the amazing work happening at Southside. If you would like to
contribute to helping the K9 unit get vests for their other dogs, you can visit K9 Support NW.
A not-to-be-missed event this month is Book-It! on January 29. ‘My Soul is Filled with Joy: A
Holocaust Story’ tells the story of author Karen Treiger’s in-laws, Holocaust survivors Sam and
Esther Goldberg. Sam was one of approximately 65 people to survive the Treblinka Death Camp.
After escaping during a prisoner uprising and fleeing to the nearby forest, he met Esther, who had
been hiding there for more than a year. There is limited seating so book early. To purchase your
ticket, go to www.brownpapertickets.com or call 800-838-3006 and ask for the Karen Treiger
event. No tickets will be available at the Center or the front desk.
2020 is going to be an exciting time at the Center. We have a lot of activities, programs and events
planned and we would love to have you involved! We love our volunteers!
Fun Facts from Liven 3: Fast food chains call frequent buyers of their food “heavy users.” / The average person spends 6
months of their lifetime waiting on a red light to turn green. / The largest recorded snowflake was in Keogh, MT in 1887,
and was 15 inches wide. / You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching television. / There are more lifeforms
living on your skin than there are people on the planet. / A human will eat on average 70 assorted insects and 10 spiders

Southside News
Good News! Haywire Is Getting His
Bullet Proof Vest
Thanks to your generosity a check for
$3,327 was presented at the December 17
luncheon to K9 Support NW to purchase a
bullet proof vest for Haywire. Nate
Spiering, head of the Spokane Police
Canine Unit, Officer David Stone and
Carla Blazek of K9 Support NW accepted
the check as Haywire watched. Sgt.
Spiering said that the $3,300 will be enough to buy vests for two
K9s—Haywire and one other.
Haywire is the two-year-old German shepherd who works with his
partner, senior police officer David Stone. He stole our hearts when
he and David demonstrated their skills at Fido Fete in June. We
were so alarmed that Haywire was working without ballistic
protection when chasing perps with guns, we started a fund to buy
him a bullet proof vest. Officer Stone said “ I am blown away at the
generosity and support and all you have done for K9 Haywire and
me! Thanks again for all the support.” We’re guessing the wagging
tail and “woof” also means thanks.
The vest will be provided through K9 Support NW, a 501(c)3 non-
profit organization based in Spokane, that raises funds to purchase
high-grade ballistic vests, training, unbudgeted veterinary care and
equipment for police K9 units in Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Recipe for a Very Merry Santa Breakfast Ingredients:
A hard working committee
Fabulous volunteers
Great food
Lively seasonal music
Photos printed on the spot
Families and children
Photogenic pets ……………………...AND Santa!
****************************************************
This is exactly what an army of Southside “elves” cooked up for
the enjoyment of Spokane families on three Saturdays in
December. Wow! There are too many committee members and
Saturday volunteers to list and thank here. You will see
their names on a lobby poster! Volunteers gave over 320
Saturday hours to make Santa Breakfast a smashing success?
Melinda Kresek, Sheila Goulding and their helpers cooked star-
rated breakfasts of pancakes, sausage, cheesy eggs with apple
sauce and apple juice…for more than 500 happy folks.
The Creative Strings Chamber Orchestra led by Susan Roberts
played seasonal classics and Taylor Belote, playing Christmas
tunes with a calypso beat on the steel drum, kept toes tapping and
children dancing in the ballroom!
Lori and Jim Dillon worked photographic magic and produced
photos of smiling families, a few crying children and some
fantastic pups…ready to take home…no waiting!
Finally, there was Santa! Santa and his elf assistants handed out
toys and helped children sign Santa’s book. He had a lot of secret
wishes to fulfill for many good boys and girls.
See you next year Santa!

When Women Ruled the World * When it comes to women in power,
we’ve come a long way…right?
Join Dr. Kara Cooney, professor of
Egyptology, for a look at a time in
ancient history when women ruled
the world.
Often neglected in history books,
these women were considered ex-
ceptions to the rule, political pawns
in a patriarchal society. But their power and influence is undenia-
ble. Cleopatra used her sexuality—and her money—to build alli-
ances with warlords of the Roman empire. Neferusobek was the
first woman to definitively take the title of King. Nefertiti is
known more for her beauty than for bringing a fractured Egypt
together.
What can we learn from how these women ruled? Dr. Cooney
shares some illuminating answers.

Glacial Lake Missoula ** & the Ice Age Floods with Richard Sola Let’s study, in depth, the
fascinating geological his-
tory of our region on an
overnight tour to western
Montana. We will travel on
a full-size coach. We’ll
make a loop including
Sandpoint, St. Ignatious
and Missoula. We’ll learn in-depth about how our unique landscape
was formed. Our expert guide will be Richard Sola, a native of
Washington who teaches, writes and lectures about the history of
Eastern Washington. He is also a study leader for Road Scholar
programs in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.
A summary of the Floods:
During the last glacial advance 15,000 years ago a finger from the
glacial ice sheet moved south through the Purcell Trench in northern
Idaho, near present day Lake Pend Oreille, damming the Clark Fork
River creating Glacial Lake Missoula. The water began to build up
behind the 2,500-foot ice dam and filled the valleys to the east with
water, creating a glacial lake the size of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario
combined. The water continued to
rise until it reached its maximum
height at an elevation of 4,200 feet.
As the water rose, the pressure
against the ice dam increased, ulti-
mately, causing the dam to fail cata-
strophically. The water began to escape due to pressure beneath the
ice dam by carving sub-glacial tunnels at an exponential rate. The
floodwaters from Glacial Lake Missoula moved through eastern
Washington on a 430-mile journey to the Pacific Ocean, forever
changing the landscape by stripping away topsoil, and picking apart
the bedrock. The floodwater carved an immense channel system
across eastern Washington. A full-size motor coach, lakeside lodg-
ing in Polson, a picnic and dinner will be included.
$319 per person double occupancy, $445 single.
