FAITH FORMATION

SOLEMITY OF STS. PETER & PAUL MONDAY, JUNE 29TH

As early as the year 258, there is evidence of an already lengthy tradition of celebrating the solemnities of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the same day. Together,

the two saints are the founders of the See of Rome, through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom there. Peter, who was named Simon, was a fisherman of Galilee and was introduced to the Lord Jesus by his brother Andrew, also a fisherman. Jesus gave him the name Cephas (Petrus in Latin), which means ‘Rock,’ because he was to become the rock upon which Christ would build His Church. The Acts of the Apostles illustrates his role as head of the Church after the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ. Peter led the Apostles as the first Pope and ensured that the disciples kept the true faith. St. Peter spent his last years in Rome, leading the Church through persecution and was martyred in the year 64. He was crucified upside-down at his own request, because he claimed he was not worthy to die as his Lord. He was buried on Vatican hill, and St. Peter's Basilica is built over his tomb.

St. Paul was the Apostle of the Gentiles. Before receiving the name Paul, he was Saul, a Jewish Pharisee who zealously persecuted Christians in Jerusalem. Saul's conversion took place as he was on his way to Damascus to persecute the Christian community there. As he was traveling along the road, he was suddenly surrounded by a great light from heaven. He was blinded and fell off his horse. He then heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” He answered: “Who are you, Lord?” Christ said: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Saul continued to Damascus, where he was baptized and his sight was restored. He took the name Paul and spent the remainder of his life preaching the Gospel tirelessly to the Gentiles of the Mediterranean world. Paul was imprisoned and taken to Rome, where he was beheaded in the year 67. He is buried in Rome in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. In a sermon in the year 395, St. Augustine of Hippo said of Sts. Peter and Paul: “Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labors, their sufferings, their preaching, and their confession of faith.

FEAST OF ST. THOMAS, APOSTLE

Patron of Doubters, Architects & Builders FRIDAY, JULY 3

St. Thomas was called to be one of the twelve Apostles. His birth and death dates are unknown. He was a dedicated but impetuous follower of Christ. When Jesus said He was returning to Judea to visit his sick friend Lazarus, Thomas immediately exhorted the other Apostles to accompany Him on the trip which involved danger and possible death because of the mounting hostility of the authorities.

At the Last Supper, when Christ told His disciples that He was going to prepare a place for them to which they also might come because they knew both the place and the way, Thomas pleaded that they did not understand and received the beautiful assurance that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

St. Thomas is best known for his role in verifying the Resurrection of his Master. Thomas' unwillingness to believe that the other Apostles had seen their risen Lord on the first Easter Sunday earned him the title of "doubting Thomas." Eight days later, on Christ's second apparition, Thomas was gently rebuked for his skepticism and furnished with the evidence he had demanded - seeing in Christ's hands the point of the nails. Thomas even put his fingers in the nail holes and his hand into Christ's side. After verifying the wounds were true, St. Thomas became convinced of the reality of the Resurrection and exclaimed, "My Lord and My God," thus making a public Profession of Faith in the Divinity of Jesus. St. Thomas is also mentioned as being present at another Resurrection appearance of Jesus - at Lake Tiberias, when a miraculous catch of fish occurred.

This is all that we know about St. Thomas from the New Testament. Tradition says that at the dispersal of the Apostles after Pentecost this saint was sent to evangelize to the Parthians, Medes, and Persians. He ultimately reached India, carrying the Faith to the Malabar coast, which still boasts a large native population calling themselves "Christians of St. Thomas." According to tradition, Thomas was killed in an accident when a fowler shot at a peacock and struck Thomas instead. Following his death, some of his relics were taken to Edessa while the rest were kept in what is now known as India. They can still be found within the San Thome Basilica in Chennai, Mylapore, India.

PARISH & COMMUNITY

Independence Day Saturday, July 4

As we celebrate Independence Day of the USA on the July 4th next Saturday, with small groups of family and friends, let us remember and pray for all those in our history who have fought and died for our freedom, and for our police, national guard, military men and women who continue to protect us and our freedom today!

God our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America

to Your loving care.

You are the rock on which this nation was founded.

You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life,

liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Reclaim this land for Your glory and dwell among Your people.

Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders.

Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom.

Remind Your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing Your will.

Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our land,

grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death.”

Lead us that we all may achieve peace within ourselves, our families, our communities, our country, and the world.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

MASS IN SPANISH SUNDAY, JULY 5, 7PM DOMINGO, 7 DE JULIO

“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

At the center of today’s Gospel of Matthew is Jesus' startling statement that the only way we have life is to lose it. We lose our life by choosing to love Jesus even above family and by serving others, even “little ones.” In the First Readying from Kings, the Shunemite woman served the prophet Elisha and provided for his needs; by so serving she received in turn the gift of life. As with us too, we concretely express our love for Jesus by serving others in all that we do…every day of our life!

Next Saturday, we will celebrate the 4th of July – the 244th Anniversary of the birth of our country. On July 4th, 1776, the Second Continental Congress announced the adoption of the Declaration of Independence to the people of the 13 colonies during a time of great upheaval and uncertainty. The Declaration was an act of vision, courage and faith, and issuing it immediately placed the lives of the signers in grave danger - as it has happened to many leaders throughout our history. Our country has endured many turbulent and violent times – fighting for rights of people, territories, religious freedom, freedom of speech, education, social justice and so on. But today, throughout our land, it has become especially violent, in some cases towards each other, or in the destruction of hard-earned businesses or property, for the cause. Have we lost we our civility and respect for another? Can we work out our differences without violence? Have we lost our way in faith? As Peter said in 1Peter3:9: “Do not return evil for evil, or insult for insult; but, on the contrary, a blessing, because to this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing.” In this remarkable nation, even in times in our history that we are not proud of - all of us - whatever our differences have been - have much to be grateful for in this country, especially those who have gone before us who have fought and died to defend and preserve it. Even in turbulent times like this, we say, from our hearts, Thank God for America! May He bestow His grace upon us so that we can work out our differences through productive, peaceful discussions and resolutions; have respect for all life and cultures; and live in harmony and peace with God as our guide. Until further notice, we have added 2 additional Masses – 6pm on Saturday night (English), and 8am on Sunday morning (Polish). We have moved the 7:30am Mass to 7am to accommodate this additional Mass. This will help us insure social distancing at all times. Please remember you MUST wear a mask at all times while in Church except when you are receiving the Eucharist. When approaching the priest or Eucharist Minister, you should make a slight bow of the head, receive the host in your hand, step to the side, lift your mask and consume the host.

As we begin celebrating the sacrifice of the Mass with you again, let us continue to deeply pray for all those that have suffered and died during this pandemic – for those with critical illnesses, financial burdens, job loss, isolation, loneliness; and for peace, equality and civility in our country today.

Happy 4th of July to you, your families and friends. God Bless You! Fr. Jacek
