Volunteer Spotlight

Names: Karen & Jim Listak

Birthplace: Karen was born in Franklin, Indiana and Jim was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Joined Partners: 2003

Give us a little background about yourselves.Karen: We met in college as undergraduates in the education program at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. I earned my master’s degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh. Jim earned his master’s in education from Slippery Rock University. We moved to Australia after graduation to work for the Department of Education in New South Wales for two years.

How did you get from Australia to The Woodlands, Texas?Karen: We moved back to Pittsburgh where Jim worked in the steel industry. Jim was transferred to Houston in 1983. We lived here for a few years and then moved to Austin. After 10 years there, we moved to The Woodlands. I was one of the founding teachers and parents of The John Cooper School. I taught for 31 years before retiring.

How did you fi nd out about The Pavilion Partners?Karen: We found Partners at the Home and Garden Show. It sounded interesting and we had just returned to The Woodlands as empty-nesters. We wanted to be able to give back to our community and thought it was a really fun opportunity.

What committees are you involved with?Karen: I’m involved with the scholarship, membership and social committees. Once I retired from teaching, a parent of a former student of mine was retiring from the Partners board and thought I would be perfect for it. I’m now a member of the board of directors and on my second term.

What is your favorite part about being involved with Partners?Karen: We have made so many new friends. We have been exposed to so many new things on a cultural level through the arts at The Pavilion. You really grow as a person. It’s such a rewarding experience.

Who has been your favorite performer you have seen at The Pavilion?Karen: Annually, it’s Jimmy Buffett, but Bruce Springsteen put on quite a show this year!

What’s your favorite event that you volunteer for as a Partner?Karen: As a former teacher, I love Children’s Festival. The kids are so cute. Their faces just light up when they come here! I also love Musical Scores and being able to work with at-risk youth.

What are you involved with outside of Partners?Karen: I’m involved with an adult literacy program as well as Adult Lifetime Learning at Lone Star College.Jim: I have worked as a National Account Executive for Sanofi Pharmaceuticals for the past 28 years. I’m also involved with the American Diabetes Association and veterans groups.

Do you have any children?Karen: We have one son, Christopher. He lives in Los Angeles and works in TV production. He just wrapped “Dancing with the Stars” recently.

What do you like to do in your spare time?Karen: We love to travel! I think we were bitten by the travel bug when we lived in Australia. We like to go somewhere new once every two years or so. I loved Amsterdam, Paris and Venice, Italy. We also are avid readers. We both enjoy historical fi ction.

Sponsor Spotlight

In each issue of OnStage, we turn the spotlight ontoone of our sponsors, a gesture of thanks for theirinvaluable contributions to the many things we

work hard to accomplish.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion presented by Huntsman is proud to highlight Jackson Walker L.L.P. as a sponsor at Holly Jolly Jingle for the 2014 performing arts season. As the snow sponsor for Holly Jolly Jingle this season, it is the fi rst time that Jackson Walker has sponsored an event at The Pavilion. Jeff Harder, corporate partner at Jackson Walker, serves on The Pa-vilion’s board of directors.

“The arts are an important part of our culture and our com-munities. They reach out across racial, social and economic barriers and contribute to the success and diversity of our country,” Harder said. “Jackson Walker is proud to be a part of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and the role it has played throughout the past 24 years in advancing our appreciation for the arts.”

In addition to sponsoring activities at The Pavilion, Jackson Walker is actively involved in community service initiatives throughout its various cities. One component of such service is pro bono legal representation of individuals and organizations. Jackson Walker’s Houston offi ce was named a recipient ofthe 2013 Harris County Bench Bar Pro Bono Award in the mid–size fi rm category. They are active in a variety of nonprofi t or-ganizations, including Houston Volunteer Lawyers, Recipe for Success, the Immunization Partnership and many others. Firm-wide, Jackson Walker attorneys donated more than 11,000 hours to pro bono clients in 2013.

“Jackson Walker L.L.P. is one of the oldest and largest law fi rms in Texas and we are honored to have their support in our efforts to bring the arts to our community,” said Christine Scully direc-tor of development for The Pavilion.

Since its founding in 1887, Jackson Walker has grown to in-clude more than 350 attorneys in seven Texas offi ces providing comprehensive services in a broad range of practice areas. For more than 125 years, Jackson Walker L.L.P. has represented companies that have changed the face of Texas business. Today, their attorneys continue to deliver practical, effi cient solutions to clients in Texas, throughout the United States and abroad.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell PavilionSponsors Support the Arts

As a nonprofi t performing arts venue, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilionrelies on the generosity and participation of local businesses andorganizations to provide the community with the best performing arts programming in the area. These sponsors contribute in many ways, including monetary donations, providing interactive activities in the plazas during events and supplying volunteers at The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs.

Some sponsors, like Woodforest National Bank, have been supporters of The Pavilion for almost its entire existence. A sponsor for 23 seasons, Woodforest has a presence at each performing arts event and also has the naming rights for The Pavilion’s VIP Club.

“Being a community bank, Woodforest National Bank aligns itself with opportunities to give back to the communities we serve,” said Robert E. Marling, Jr., CEO of Woodforest National Bank. “Through The Pavilion’s performing arts programs, we are able to be a small part of enhancing the cultural enrichment of so many.”

While Woodforest supports the arts through the season, Marling cites Children’s Festival as his favorite Pavilion program.

“It would be hard to choose a favorite, as all programs are exceptional in their genres,” Marling said. “The Annual Children’s Festival, with its vast number of participants, allows even more people to enjoy and

experience a ‘Pavilion moment.’”

Other sponsors have only recently begun supporting The Pavilion’s performing arts events. Most recently, Texas Children’s Hospital—The Woodlands signed on as the newest performing arts sponsor. “The enrichment provided by The Pavilion’s programs to the community and families

in The Woodlands is extremely valuable,” said Lisa Yelenick, director of marketing and public relations for Texas Children’s

Hospital. “Part of Texas Children’s mission is to play an integral role and be a committed member of the communities where we provide healthcare services.”

Check out “Encore” for a complete list of all our performing arts sponsors. The next time that you enter The Pavilion gates for a performing arts event, make sure to visit the booths in the plazas and thank our sponsors for supporting the arts in your community.

CHILDRENThe Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orches-tra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cellphones and other audible electronics. Photography and videography are NOT allowed during the performances, including with cellphones, at the request of the artists. Tablets, such as iPads and Kindles, are not permitted into the venue because they are a distraction to other guests and the artists.

LATE SEATINGFashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats.

DURING THE PERFORMANCEGuests should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a per-formance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assis-tance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience.

APPLAUSENot sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience.

AFTER THE CONCERTBravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely. TO PICNIC, OR NOT TO PICNIC?Picnics are welcome at all performing arts events at The Pavilion. Guests can bring in any type of food item; however, beverages can not be brought into the venue. Guests are welcome to bring empty water bottles to fi ll at water fountains or to purchase beverages at our concessions stands.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion offers concertgoers live performing arts events in a picturesque setting featuring such world-renowned organizations as the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera and Texas Music Festival Orchestra. The following information about concert etiquette will enhance your visit and help ensure that all of our guests enjoy their arts experience to the fullest.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion acknowledges the fi nancial support of The Woodlands Township that is generated by the Event Admissions Tax for its performing arts and educational programs.

The Center for the Performing Arts at The Woodlands would like to thank the following contributors for their fi nancial support of our 2014 Performing Arts Season and Educational Outreach Programs as of November 24, printing deadline.
