We thank our wonderful grant writer, Carolyn Mayer for secur-ing funding which will benefit so many teachers and, by extension, their students.
Information about the 2011 OMTA conference and our confer-ence partner Portland Internation-al Piano Festival will be arriving in the mail soon. Information can also be found on the OMTA web site and in the February issue of Music News.
—Dr. Bonnie Esbensen Conference Chair
OMTA received an award of $13,920 from the Oregon Com-munity Foundation (OCF) to help cover the costs of the 2011 state conference. The money will come from the Nellie Tholen fund at OCF and is earmarked for the ben-efit and education of music teachers.
The OCF award will help OMTA in two major ways. It will fund housing rebates to teachers who need to stay in a hotel during the conference, thus removing the extra financial burden on teachers who live a good distance from the conference site. Most importantly, the grant will make it possible to bring a highly acclaimed pedagogy specialist to the conference for lectures and master classes.

President’s Corner
Dear Colleagues,
As promised in the last Music News, it is now my pleasure to introduce you to our new Administrative Assistant, Robin Power. Robin officially took the position with OMTA on February 7, and is work-ing to get previous office requests up to date and provide future prompt services for our members. Robin is a former OMTA member and currently works with Port-land Piano International in addition to her position with OMTA. Please make a note of the new contact information for OMTA Central Office:
Robin Power, Administrative AssistantOregon Music Teacher’s Association PO Box 5335Portland, OR [email protected]
As we approach our beautiful Oregon springtime, I reflect on this past teaching year and the benefits I’ve been afforded as a music teacher and OMTA member. I also look forward to the culmination of the year with upcoming student events and witness-ing the feeling of pride and accomplishment that our students experience as they progress in their study and enjoyment of music.
I would ask you to consider what benefits your OMTA membership brings to you and spread the word among the non-member teachers you might know in the community. I’ve received reports of suc-cessful collaborative music performances, valuable District programs funded through our OMTA Nellie Tholen fund, the suc-cess of our State-sponsored Festivals, and the availability of a network of teachers who offer ideas and information from which we can expand our knowledge and refresh our inspiration. If you know of teachers in your community who are not members, please invite them to your meetings and let them know of the benefits of OMTA membership.
Also, please explore all the opportuni-ties provided to you through OMTA and MTNA There are student scholarships and grants for teachers’ continuing education that often go unclaimed. They are there for your benefit and listed on our website (www.oregonMTA.org) and in our handbook.
I always look forward to any comments and suggestions from our members, and I thank you for sharing them.
Warm regards,Fern L. McArthur, NCTMPresident, OMTA

State News
In a star-studded first issue, Dr. Claire Wachter, Dr. Jill Timmons, Dr. Matt Cooper, Robyn Pfeifer, and Peter Brownlee share their insights on what it means to teach music in the 21st Century. With ad-vice ranging from studio policies to use of technology, and from Baroque performance practice to the integration of jazz, pop, and world music, these gifted writers cover the challenges and the opportunities we face each day in our teaching profession.
In addition to keeping costs low while providing access for everyone, the new electronic format allows members and those outside Oregon to enjoy the wisdom of our talented writers. Copies have been e-mailed to each of you, and the journal may also be accessed through our state website. Thanks to this new format, the authors have received
Rhonda Ringering, NCTM Editor, Oregon Musician
positive feedback from MTNA and from teaching authorities around the country.
Oregon Musician will be released twice a year—in January and in July. Each issue will focus on a broad topic and featured authors will come from a cross-section of teachers. As editor I seek to represent professionals from all over the state—studio teachers, college professors, performers, business professionals, long-time members and fresh young voices. We are stronger for our diversity of voice and experience and it is my hope that Oregon Musician will feed that strength.
Take the time to savor this first issue. Share it with friends. And please contact me with suggestions and feedback. After all, Oregon Musician is your journal.

District News Central Oregon
Kathy Gault, NCTMMusic News Correspondent
Greetings from Central Oregon where we are busy with winter programs and our annual Bach Festival. In January, Jean Shrader, pianist, gave an informative and entertaining presentation on ‘The Art of Accompanying—Tips, Tricks and True Confessions.” She was assisted by soprano Trish Sewell, a longtime friend and collabo-rator. Our February program was presented by Kathy Gault, on ‘Internet Resources—Games, Networking, Studio Promotion, Professional Improvement, Inspiration—It’s All Out There At Our Fingertips.’ It is grat-ifying to see concurrent articles in American Music Teacher and our own Oregon Musi-cian on this expansive and expanding topic. Our March program will explore summer teaching opportunities.
On January 22, MTNA’s International Day of Collaborative Music, OMTA mem-bers Kathy Gault and Jean Shrader took part in a chamber music concert with other members of the Central Oregon Symphony, as part of its series ‘Music in Public Places’. There were two performances, one at the Sunriver library and one at the St. Charles Medical Center (hospital). Both were well attended, and included of music by Men-delssohn, Brahms, Warlock, Bach, Marais and Buttall.
After a cold, snowy start last fall, winter here has been dry and mostly warm. We are all enjoying the return of longer days and looking forward to the inevitable busy-ness of spring in our studios.

PIANO SYLLABUS with Virginia Hawley BuhnA Professional Course of Study on DVD
The OMTA Piano Syllabus is an outline of study de-signed to provide students with a thorough background in keyboard skills, musical understanding and perfor-mance ability. The DVDs offer ideas and methods for implementing the syllabus as a basis for learning and performance.
The original VCRs were developed by Virginia Buhn in 1996 and have sold more than 1,200 copies. The new DVDs follow the course outline of the OMTA Syllabus Book and are designed to help piano teachers prepare students for a successful evaluation.
JAZZ PIANO SYLLABUS with Gary RuppertA Professional Course of Study on DVD
The OMTA Jazz Piano Syllabus was developed by Gary Ruppert in the mid 1980s. A revision, done in the summer of 2003, was based on feedback received from teachers, students, and adjudicators who used the first version. Their comments and encouragement have been of inestimable value
This DVD is meant to help teachers and their stu-dents navigate the various levels of the Jazz Syllabus and discover the joys of studying jazz piano.
