FROM YOUR

PASTOR’S HEART

The cycle of this year continues to move forward with precise and relentless regularity. The PGA tournament and the WV State Fair have come and gone. We are happy to see them come but perhaps even happier to

see them go! School is now in session and we seek that “normal” rhythm of life. Whatever “normal” is. I dare say that all of us would not miss too many regular meals. Many of us would not miss too many regular times of

Page 3: oldgreenbrierbaptistchurch.typepad.com · Web view– This fall I will preach primarily from the Book of Exodus. It paints a beautiful picture of God’s intervention to deliver His

physical exercise. But how many of us miss worship on a regular

basis? Too many in my opinion. Remember that God has created us as physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual beings. Don’t neglect exercising any of these components of your life. Atrophy in one area will affect the others. Make sure that your “normal” rhythm of life this fall includes regular participation in corporate worship and Bible study.

9/11 Memorial Concert – Please make plans to be at our community Memorial Concert on September 11th. See the details on the facing page. This will be a wonderful time of worship through music as we honor our first reponsders and remember those who died in the aftermath of this national tragedy.

Exodus – This fall I will preach primarily from the Book of Exodus. It paints a beautiful picture of God’s intervention to deliver His people from slavery into the freedom of the Promised Land. It still speaks to us today about things that enslave us and our need for God’s deliverance. Thankfully, God has raised up his greatest Deliverer in Jesus Christ. He is the one who opens the way for our final exodus from sin, death, and Hell into abundant life now and the Promised Land of Heaven.

The October Men’s Community Prayer Breakfast will be Saturday, October 1st at 8am at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church.

In A Nutshell

A Sunday school teacher gave her second-graders a month to memorize Psalm 23. One little boy was excited about the task but just couldn’t remember the whole chapter.

When the day came for the children to recite the Psalm before the congregation, the nervous boy stepped up to the microphone and said, “The Lord is my Shepherd, and that’s all I need to know!”

Dear Lord Jesus,

bless the children and youth of this nation, returning to their schools and colleges. Also bless their teachers as they help them grow in wisdom and knowledge.May Your Holy Spirit enlighten their minds, purify their vision, andstrengthen their wills.

Protect them as they learn in the classroom and participate in activities outside it.

May they learn to follow in your steps, just as you grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. Amen.
