Not Your Average Shepherd

Young Gisborne shepherd Katie Herries is not your average girl and said there’s no such thing as a typical day in her job. “Every day is different. At the moment we have put the bulls out to the heifers and we’re docking the hogget lambs.”

“I love being outdoors and working on the land, working with dogs, horses, stock and like-minded people.”

She and her huntaway dog Scruff won the women’s section of the prestigious annual Hunterville Shemozzle in October.

Shepherds from around the country took part in the challenge event, in which shepherds and their dogs had to complete a three kilometre run and a testing obstacle course.

Wearing an old potato sack, which got wet and heavy,

Katie ran up a steep hill then down a mudslide and had to drink a mixture of milk and vinegar as part of the challenge.

“The new Bark Up event was held before the race where 125 huntaways barked in the streets of Hunterville.”

This was the launch of a mental health campaign in memory of a young shepherd who took his own life.

Called ‘Will to Live’, it targets young rural men and women and encourages them to speak up about depression.

“It felt great to be part of this event and I believe they have raised over $18,500.”

finished school she did the cadet training course at Waipoapoa Station and then worked at Mangaorangi Station on the East Coast.

At the moment she is working as a casual shepherd on two properties — one in Rere and the other in Tiniroto.

“I plan to go overseas next year. I want to go to Canada and America to work on a ranch.”

She wants to work with horses and learn the way they break them in and also has plans to work as a wrangler where she will help out the hunting guide. - Gisborne Herald

Since the completion of The Heritage Room, we now enjoy an incredible historical record, displayed in beautifully crafted oak cabinets, of Iona and its first 100 years. This room has now turned into an exceptional area for welcoming visitors to Iona, governance meetings and significant Iona occasions. It has been brought to our attention that the Iona crockery is not the best for some of these events. Especially mugs for hot drinks are not ideal placed on the refurbished boardroom tables.

I thought it would be a lovely idea to have fine china cups, saucers and plates from Old Girls that tell a story and live on being used for Old Girls morning teas, Founders’ Day, Old Girls occasions, fundraisers and significant events held in The Heritage Room. I have a lot of old china cups and saucers that were my mother’s and unfortunately

sit in the cupboard, I would be very happy to donate a few to Iona. The thought that they would get a new life and be enjoyed by the Iona community gives me a lot of pleasure.

The Foundation is asking Old Girls to donate a china set to Iona with a little blurb about where it came from and what family connection it might have to Iona.

Your donation can be dropped into school, or posted to: Iona College, Lucknow Road, Private Bag 1000, Havelock North 4157.

Two Old Girls have kindly offered to act as drop off points for fine china: Anne Velvin – Taupo 07 3772922 or 021 0729975 Address: Moselle, 3 Te Hepera Street Taupo 3330. Sue Wilson – Wairoa 06 838 7823 c/- Farmlands Store, Wairoa.

I hope you find this idea appealing and even have a spare china cup set in your own cupboard.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

GAME ON! We are excited to announce a major fundraising event for the upgrade of Iona College’s hard court surface – Multisport Complex.

The event, GAME ON! is a collaborative effort between Iona Parents & Friends’ Association, Iona Old Girls’ Association, past parents and the local community.

Event: Game On! Black tie dinner & auction Date: Saturday 22 June 2019 Venue: Peak Vision Church, Te Mata Road, Havelock North Special guest speaker: Sir John Kirwan Event MC: Sky Sports Commentator, Steve McIvor

Our aim is to have 400 attendees from within the Hawke’s Bay Community, a black tie seated dinner and an auction of around twenty significant lots on the evening in addition to a silent online auction of around 30 items. This event to raise funds to upgrade our Multi Sports complex.

Whilst the key aim of the event would be to raise funds to enhance facilities at Iona College, we would also like to make a donation towards Sir John’s Charity, the ‘JK Foundation’ which help support young New Zealanders by teaching them how to understand and improve their mental health .

Iona’s 1st XI Hockey Team recently won the New Zealand Secondary School’s top tier Federation Cup Hockey Tournament and its Netball teams are performing across many different levels. The College facilities for both these sports in particular are less than ideal and we hope that the funds raised, will go a significant way towards addressing this.

Whist a formal announcement will be made in the next couple of weeks, we would like to invite you to register any expressions of interest you have in supporting this event, either by reserving a table of ten, corporate sponsorship, or a donation of items for the auction. If you have an interest in this, or equally would like to be a part of the event team, please:

Reunion - Class of ‘59’

In Memorium (2018 - 2019)

Our “Class of ‘59” have recently met at Waimarama Beach. It is 60 years since we started at Iona, and we mustered 18 together for this reunion, celebrating ‘keeping close together, not far apart,’ as Helen Armstrong, Principal, said in the closing line of her welcome text in the “Triquetra - Update Magazine”.

Our class reunions started around the time when we all turned 60, and after Heather Anderson had passed away. We are now 73 years old, or thereabouts, and we raised our glasses, (both those on our faces, and the ones containing wine) to remember the five others who have passed away, along with those who could not travel to be with us this time for various reasons.

The stories flowed, we laughed and cried, and pored over old school photos and school magazines.

Boarding school in those days was very different compared to today. Most of us spent our first year sleeping in the ‘dog boxes’, and really looked forward to our ‘exeat day’, a part day, after church, when we could escape school to spend a few hours with our parents and family.

We plan on meeting annually now, as each year grows more important to retain that special bond and togetherness we formed way back in 1959.

The Association invites year groups to consider organising a reunion. Please contact our Branch Secretary:
