FunctiOnDEScriptiOn
DESIgN
AllOilmistDetectorsoftheViSAtrOn®familyaredesig-nedtolastthelifetimeoftheengine.the measuring heads containing the optical system foropacity measurement, as well as the electronics, aredesigned to be interchangeable with the older Vn/87series,producedforalmost25years.
theair jetpump,theconnectorplug,thepipeconnectorbox(Vn115/87plus)resp.thevalvebox(Vn116/87plusandVn215/87plus)andtheshock-absorbingmountingplatefortheactualmeasuringheadaremountedona solidbaseplate.
AllViSAtrOn®OilmistDetectorsareequippedwith3re-layoutputs:-Systemready-pre-Alarm-highOilmistAlarm(alsocalledmainAlarm)
AllViSAtrOn®-devicescontinuouslydrawtheatmospherefromcompartmentsofthecrankcasebymeansofasuctionsystem.thesuction required isgeneratedby theVenturieffect,fedbycompressedair.thesampleflow,consistingofairfromthecrankcasecompartments,isguidedthrougha light beam of infrared light formeasuring opacity. thelevel of oil mist is measured by the absorption of theinfraredlight.Opacity (in %) is used as the dimensional unit of theturbidity;100%Opacitymeanstotallightabsorption,and0%opacitynoabsorption.
theVn87plusseriesoffersthefollowingstandardfeatures:• Scavengingairchambersarenotsuppliedwithairfrom
theengineatmosphere,butwithfreshpressurizedairso that the optical system is well protected againstcontaminationandstaysclean.Alsothefiltersstaycleanforalongerperiod.
• A measuring head heating unit prevents possiblecondensation, limitingthedangeroffalsealarmsduetohumidityaroundtheopticalsystem.
• An rS 485 interface permits the connection ofthe Vn87plus series to a remote monitoring unit,alternatively the system may be connected via a4-20mAconnection.
• Aseparatepre-alarmrelay,activatedat70%opacityofmainalarmlevel,willbeactivatedbeforeanenginestopwillbetriggeredbasedonahighconcentrationofoilmist(endangeringtheengine).

comprehensiveinvestigationsondifferenttypesofengineshavemadeclear that thesamplingpoints for theoilmisthavetobeplacedintheinteriorofthecrankcaseatpointswherethehighestpossibleconcentrationofoilmistcanbeextracted,intheshortesttimepossible.theconcentrationofextractedoilmistfromthecrankcaseisanindicationoftheconditionofthecrankdrive.itisimperativethataccu-rateinformationistransmittedasasignalwiththegreatestpossibleintensityfromthepointofoilmistgeneration,so
thatthesensitivityoftheOilmistDetectordoesn‘thavetobesetunnecessarilyhigh.Otherwise,interferinginfluencesarealsoreceivedandevaluated.One of the most important requirements for a well-functioning oil mist monitoring system is the absolutenecessity of avoiding false alarms. in addition, the waythe piping system is installed on the engine is of greatimportance.
the picture shows the conventional installation of aVISATRON®OilmistDetectorVn215.thepipeshavethenecessaryslopeforthereturnoftheoilthathasprecipitatedfromtheoilmist.Duetothisslope,thepipesrequireanareaoffreespaceextendingovertheentirelengthoftheengineand part of its height. this prevents obstruction of thecrankcasedoors and compartmentsduringmaintenancework.
the picture shows, the installation of a ViSAtrOn® Oilmist Detector, type Vn215, with individual compartmentsuctionpipesystemconsistingofaspace-savingsiphonblock assembly set. the advantage of horizontal pipeinstallationcanbeclearlyrecognised.Oilthatprecipitatesinthesuctionpipesisledbackintothecrankcasethroughthesiphonblocks.
the picture shows a further alternative in tubingarrangement for Vn115/87plus and Vn116/87plus. to avoidcollectionofexcessiveoilinthehorizontaltubingsystem,oilseparationunitsareinstalled(seemarking).

theenginewallconnectionsjointhesuctionheadslocatedin the crankcase compartment and the suctionpipesontheoutside,andareavailableinvariousdesignswithdif-ferentmetricorpipethreadsizes.mazesuctionheadswithdifferentpipe lengthscanbe installed (see illustration4).theenginewallconnectionscanbeusedforconventionalsuctionpipesystemsoralsoinconnectionwithVISATRON®siphonblocks.
SchAllEr AutOmAtiOn has developed various typesof ViSAtrOn® assembly units in order to adapt to theinstallation conditions on almost every engine design.the assembly units consist of a ViSAtrOn® OmD, aspecific engine adaptedbracket, available for crossheadand trunkpistonengines, an integratedprotectivecover,anairpressureregulationunit,fixturesandfittingsforthecompressedairsupply.theassemblyunitisacomponentoftheViSAtrOn®assemblyset.SchAllErAutOmAtiOnsupplies special, ready-mademodular assembly sets forVISATRON® Oil mist Detectors, for a variety of enginetypesfromworldwidemanufacturers.AnOilmistDetectionsystemforaspecificengine,(illustration6)consistsof:•pipeconnections,eitherwithenginewallconnectionsorsiphonblocks•ready-madepipes•Allnecessaryfittings,suchaspipesupportsandfasteningelements
pressure regulationunit (illus.8).thepressure regulationunit consistsof apressure regulatoranda throttleblockwith an integrated air filter. the throttle block ensuresthat the drive air pressure in the ViSAtrOn® Oil mistDetectordoesnot increasetoanexcessivelyhighlevel ifthepressureregulatorfails,(e.g.failureofdiaphragm).thepressure regulation unit is delivered, pre-assembled andreadytooperatewithitsbracket.
SchAllEr AutOmAtiOn offers a specially designedserviceboxfortheViSAtrOn®adaptationtotheengineforquickassemblythatisavailabletoallourclients.ServiceBox (illus. 7) on request. the service box contains allreplacement parts, tools and devices necessary for theinitialoperation,therepairandthefixingofmalfunctions.the amount of replacement parts in the service box issufficientforanoperatingperiodof1year.
