The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service’s (NASS) – Ohio Field Office is

pleased to present the 2015-2016 edition of Ohio Agricultural Statistics Annual Bulletin. This publication, which is also

available on our web site, is a compilation of the many statistical reports published over the past year that highlight Ohio’s

diverse agriculture sector.

The statistics in this bulletin showcase this diversity and are used on a regular basis to make informed decisions by

producers, consultants, advisors, government officials, and others. The compilation of this bulletin is a product of the

partnership between the Ohio Department of Agriculture and NASS.

I would like to extend a special thanks to all those producers, agri-businesses, commodity groups, and countless others

who have given their valuable time to provide the information that serve as a basis for these data. Their responses are

through the Internet, mail, via telephone, and face-to-face interviews.

Special thanks also go to the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture enumerators for their outstanding

work in collecting and providing timely and accurate data. Without their dedication to Ohio agriculture, we would be

unable to successfully provide these many data.

The Census of Agriculture is conducted by NASS every 5 years. The 2012 Census of Agriculture was released in May

2014. Results include information on farm numbers, acreage, crops, livestock, income, expenses, and demographics at the

county, state, and national level. The wide-array of Census data are used by policy makers, universities, communities,

and organizations throughout Ohio and the United States to plan for the future and compete for valuable resources. We

thank Ohio’s producers for their cooperation and providing the information which helps ensure the success of Ohio

agriculture.

Good decisions can only be made with good information. Our agency continually strives to meet our mission of providing

timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. Thanks again to all those who provided, collected, and

Agriculture and food production play a major role in the overall health of Ohio. Agriculture continues to be an economic engine,

not just for our state, but for the entire nation. With the world population growing, world wealth increasing and the demand for

food and ag products skyrocketing, that isn’t going to change anytime soon.

Most farmers do an outstanding job of producing food with integrity, treating their animals with proper care, and doing what they

can to produce the highest-quality product possible. They are astute business people who have a pulse on current trends, and

have made changes to their operations to do an even better job at managing their farms.

At the Ohio Department of Agriculture, we work every day to protect the public and safeguard the state’s plants and animals,

while at the same time allowing responsible agricultural production to thrive.

In 2015, department staff continued its daily regulatory work of protecting the public and safeguarding the state’s animals and

plants, while carrying out other regulatory duties given to us with the rise of new trends and issues in the industry. At the

forefront of our responsibilities, we monitored and protected against dangerous diseases, such as highly pathogenic avian

influenza. We worked with food growers, processors and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration toward phasing in the Food

Safety Modernization Act to improve food safety in Ohio. We also worked with farmers and related industries to improve nutrient

management on farms and to move forward with Ohio’s overall statewide water quality improvement plan.

This year also marked the consolidation of Ohio’s Soil and Water Conservation Division from the Ohio Department of Natural

Resources to the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Since the transfer, which was completed in January 2016, the Ohio

Department of Agriculture has responsibility over all farms, farm runoff and any impact on related soil and water issues,

regardless of their size. This allows us to be a complete and total, one-stop resource for farmers in Ohio with nutrient questions

and issues.

I tell people all the time, it is a great time to be involved in agriculture. There is no doubt our future is strong. Farmers

everywhere are working together to create a good outcome for everyone.

Monsanto has said that between now and 2050, we will need to double the world’s food supply. To put that into perspective, we

will need to produce more food in the next 35 years than we have in the entire history of the world. That is a pretty tall order, but

I believe with the proper technology, cooperation and science-based oversight, it is one that our farmers will have the ability to

fill.

The scientists, field technicians, veterinarians, inspectors and administrators at the Ohio Department of Agriculture are working

hard every day to protect consumers and to enforce industry standards. Everything we do is science-based and keeps public

protection in mind, while allowing responsible agricultural production to provide for a growing population. In 2016, I look forward

to another year of leading the state’s largest industry on behalf of the state and all Ohioans.
