Aloha! I am writing this just prior to taking off for a conference in Oahu with other Large Scale Community Managers. I hope to bring back some ideas to share with the Board and Community that will continue to keep the Community vibrant and thriving!
This past month was busy as we transitioned in with the new Board. The first meeting in October will include a working session to chart the course for the coming year! There are many projects for the Board to consider, along with the financial impact of each one. The Board will choose how they plan to navigate the projects over the next year and set priorities to accomplish them.
Once again, Staff was invited to join the Residents in a friendly water volleyball match. Thanks for the invitation and the wonderful fun. Residents proved they still can
hold the title, and Staff proved we too could improve and work together with each other and the Residents. Donny Disbro, the CEO of PCM came down and joined in the fun this year. In addition, PCM sponsored the dinner following the event. We all appreciated the Staff and Residents who cheered from the sidelines and the great photos taken by Patti Smith.
We have scheduled an informational seminar on Fire Prevention for October. Please plan to attend so you can gain insights about this vital topic.
Please log on to the website and register if you haven’t done so yet. The website continues to grow as we add new items. It is useful for selling unwanted items, finding out meeting dates and events of various clubs, and Recreation Department activities. Log on to www.oceanhillscountryclub.com and check it out!

Hello again—here we are in October…maybe Fall is in the air at last?
September has been a fairly quiet time for the newly elected Board.
Since the August Regular Board meeting, the Board has met in three executive sessions, and the regular Sep-tember Board meeting.
Immediately following the August Regular Board meeting, the Board met in Executive Session, and re-viewed third party contracts, a legal opinion, potential litigation, delinquency review, and Executive committee reports.
And at the Executive Session on September 13 the Board discussed Third Party Contracts.
By Angela TakemotoPresident, Board of Directors
Actions taken at the September Regular Monthly meeting were:• Approval of a proposal to create an Ad Hoc Com-
mittee to work on the details of the CC&R restatement. This will be a committee consisting of three Board mem-bers, one of whom will be Chair of the Committee, and up to two additional members, appointed by the Board from volunteer members of the Association. Members of the Committee at this time are Don Lopez, Chair, and Shirlee Sampsell and Barry Farrell. • A decision to table any more discussion on the
Street Name Change project until early 2014, in conjunc-tion with the start of the 30th Anniversary events.• An appeal from a homeowner • Approval of a renewal of the service agreement with
Toro irrigation. This agreement provides for a new more powerful computer to control the irrigation system, as well as 7 days, 24 hour support for both hardware and software.• Approval of new contract with Super Shuttle, to
provide transportation services to the community at the same rate as last year.• Approval of a proposal to relocate the area used by
O’Connell for storing plants and landscaping supplies. The new area will be in the RV lot, in an area currently

not utilized. The area will not be fenced.• A discussion on new chairs and how many to buy,
and where to store them. The subject was tabled due to lack of information. The Facilities Management Commit-tee will be doing additional research. • Information about Fair Housing training, scheduled
for the Board and staff, in October.• Agreed to change the date of the November regu-
lar Board meeting due to the planned absences of three Board members. The November Board meeting will be held on November 11th and 14th at 2pm on Monday No-vember 11th and at 10am on Thursday November 14th.• Approval of a recommendation from the Landscape
Committee for the removal of five trees and trimming for six trees.• A proposal from the Facilities Management Com-
mittee to demolish the storage structure on TV Hill was tabled to the October 3 Special meeting• The Board reviewed and accepted the report from
the Facilities Management Committee on the Reserve Study. The FMC found no major issues with the Reserve Study and recommended their review should be every other year in future.• Arnold Forman was appointed to the Golf Course
Committee to replace Robert Witt who resigned.• And Minutes of prior Board meetings were ap-
proved.Immediately following the first session of this Regular
Monthly Board meeting, on Monday September 16, the Board met in Executive session. safety cornerBy Leonard Weinstein,Director of Community Patrol Service (CPS)
Hello residents of Ocean Hills Country Club.Although this has been addressed before, for your own
safety it needs further mention. CPS officers have no-ticed the number of pedestrians walking into and out of the Clubhouse parking lot via the exit drive with the sign reading DO NOT ENTER. No, I’m not saying pedestri-ans shouldn’t enter here! Have you noticed the slope, the curve in this driveway as well as the narrow width due to vehicle parking on one side of the driveway? For your own safety, please be both vigilant and stay to one side of the driveway as a driver’s visibility is somewhat limit-ed in this area.
With decreasing daylight hours coupled with enjoy-ing a walk through our community, please remember the reduced visibility both for yourself and vehicle driv-ers. There are several precautions you may take to en-sure greater safety. Wear light colored clothing, prefer-ably with reflective surfaces. There are easy-attach items available from local stores. You should also carry a flash-light not only for your own visibility in a darkened area, but so an oncoming driver can see you. Does your “family member” (the DOG) have a collar, leash, jacket, whatever
you use, with reflective material affixed? Also, let’s look at this from the driver’s point of view. When behind the wheel, your even greater attention during reduced visi-bility, i.e., dusk, is even more important. Watch for pedes-trians, either two or four legged; slow down even more.
As we approach the end of 2013, your Community Pa-trol is endeavoring to ensure that all residents have had their Emergency Monitoring System (EMS) tested for the year. Having this system properly functioning is for your own safety and welfare. Should you receive a request to schedule an appointment, please work with the officer to ensure your system is properly functioning.
Home Preparedness Tip: Make a video/list of all pos-sessions in your home, with the make, model and identi-fication number of valuable items.SHOULD YOU NEED ASSISTANCE, THE FRONT
GATE TELEPHONE NUMBER IS 760-758-7111.Be SAFE, Be SMART, and most of all, BE HAPPY.
Once again, thanks for your time and thanks for reading The Safety Corner.

Fall is here so we will be bringing out the pumpkins, the cider and the candy. On October 31st, the Recreation Department asks you join us for a Spooky Open House from 10am – 2pm. Refreshments, games and the popcorn machine will be out in the lobby for all to enjoy. The staff will be dressed in costume- someone mentioned dressing up as the” Duck Dynasty” characters on TV- we will have to contemplate that creative idea and maybe NOT! Hap-py Halloween!
It is the hope that we have a good group of residents who come to get their flu shots on Saturday, October 5, 9 am-1 pm. Pre-registration takes place on Thursday, Octo-ber 3, 3-5 pm, just to help accelerate the paperwork pro-cess. Walgreen’s is our host and they will assist residents with billing their insurance, just be sure to bring in your insurance cards.
The Reservations for 2014 are beginning and submissions will be requested based on priority. Next year with the 30th Anni-versary Plans se-curing the dates for their events, it will cer-tainly seem that there is less to choose from. The photo sessions will be starting in January-June and the availability of the Art Room will be limited. Everyone will have the opportuni-ty to make an appointment for a photo shoot and order additional pictures if desired. Note: More information to follow from the 30th Anniversary Committee.
The Community Services Committee has looked into seminars that could benefit the community. This month a “Seniors and the Law” Seminar will be presented on Thursday, October 17 at 1 pm. It should be quite informa-tive and a pamphlet will be given out on the day of. Resi-dent Forrest Newberg will discuss some of the issues se-niors should be aware of and of great concern.
The New Recumbent Bike should arrive soon and we will make an attempt to keep what we have and make

I love fall! Fall is exciting. It’s apples and cider. It’s an airborne spider. It’s pumpkins in bins. It’s burrs on dog’s chins. It’s wind blowing leaves. It’s chilly red knees. It’s nuts on the ground. It’s a crisp dry sound. It’s green leaves turning And the smell of them burning. It’s clouds in the sky. It’s fall. That’s why... I love fall.

room for the recumbent. The recumbent bike has gained popularity, as it allows you to bicycle sitting down which some people find easier and more stable to ride.
Remember the Hearing Aid Check on the 2nd Thurs-day of the month from 1:30pm – 3:00pm. This service has been provided for many years by Mr. Tubbs and it has been appreciated.
Our Fitness Trainer, Cheryl Schindler continues to make herself available on the 2nd Saturday of the month from 12-2pm in the Fitness Center. If you should desire a more structured program she will set that up with you.
Thank you to our Woodchucks for all the help with the Annual Flea Market. This event brings so many new fac-es to the Clubhouse and it feels like community as resi-dents beg, barter and “not steal” from fellow neighbors. The hot dogs were “delish.” The treasures and junk were to die for and being in the Clubhouse was a welcomed spot — creating a cool zone for all to enjoy!
This month brings the long daylight hours to a close, so on Sunday, November 2, change those clocks back an hour.
Remember if you see something in the Clubhouse that is in need of repair, please report it to the Front Desk and we can fill out a work order to get the repair done in a timely manner.

In June seniors who registered in Oceanside’s Solu-tions for Seniors on the Go program found out the hard way that the $5 door-to-door Van Service, the most attrac-tive amenity offered by the City, was temporarily sus-pended until further notice. The unofficial explanation was that they were in the process of negotiating for a new carrier. However, it is suspected without tangible proof that they simply ran out of Grant Funds. This is believ-able in view of their assertion that the number of seniors registering for the program is increasing at the rate of al-most 30% a year. It is obvious that funding does not in-crease at the same pace as the demand for service. As a result, service may continue to be at risk in the future.
However, on August 26, letters were mailed to all reg-istered seniors notifying them that Van Service would re-sume on September 9 and the other services, Taxi Scrip and Volunteer Drivers would continue unchanged. If you are 65 or older and are no longer able to drive, you can register with the program by calling the Oceanside Senior Center at 760 435-5253 or 760 435-3109 (Janet Grate), 8 am to 4 pm in order to receive an application form and a permanent passenger ID number required when request-ing all services. Or you can obtain an application form from the rack next to the Clubhouse Front Desk. Be sure to sign the waiver on the reverse side.
The following is a summary of the services offered un-der the program to get you to and from medical and den-tal appointments, pharmacies and grocery stores. Chang-es and additional instructions have been emboldened.
Van servicesIntended for all destinations within Oceanside as well
as Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital, Scripps Encinitas, Kaiser Carlsbad, Kaiser San Marcos, Palomar San Marcos and any medical facility in the Tri-City area. Once reg-istered reservations are made by calling FACT, the new carrier, at 1-888-924-3228. Reservation hours are 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. Hours for rides are 6 am to 6 pm seven days a week. Reservations must be made a mini-mum of 72 hours in advance and can be made up to 7 days
in advance. Personal Care Attendants or companions will be accommodated upon request at no extra charge. The fare is $5 each way (cash only). Tipping not required. You should reserve your return trip at the same time as the initial trip or risk a potentially long wait.
taxi scrip$20 worth of taxi scrip will cost you only $7 but you
are limited to $80 worth of scrip a month for $28. Scrip is best used locally since $80 worth of scrip will only take you about 40 miles one way. It should be ordered early in the month since supplies are limited. You can choose scrip from either Yellow Cab or 24/7. Both are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Reservations can be made at any time up to 1 hour in advance. New amenity this year – You may purchase your scrip by phone with either a Visa or MasterCard by calling 760-435-5253 or 760-435-3109. If ordering by mail, make you check payable to the City of Oceanside and mail to Solutions for Seniors on the Go at 455 Country Club Lane, Oceanside, CA 92054
Volunteer Driver serviceFree door-to-door service (no tipping) is offered from
Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and is limit-ed to the North County Area. Due to high demand, medi-cal and dental appointments have priority over groceries in scheduling. Each rider is limited to 4 rides per month. Requests for rides must be made at least 1 week in ad-vance and may be requested up 30 days in advance. Call the Transportation Coordinator at the same 2 numbers quoted in other sections of this article. Unless you are financially impaired, this should be your last option be-cause of high demand and limited number of drivers cur-rently available who are in turn restricted to 250 miles per month.
Please note that all of the above information has been published under the auspices of the Community Service Committee. Changes may unexpectedly occur in the fu-ture. It is recommended that you call the Oceanside Com-munity Center to confirm or clarify the information of in-terest to you.
Other forms of alternate transportation will be reiter-ated in future issues of this publication.

anGlers President Paul Yoshida announces the Oc-
tober 8 Club meeting at 7 pm in the Mykonos Room at the Clubhouse. All members and guests are in-vited to attend monthly meetings held the second Tues-day of the month in the Mykonos Room. Come to the meeting to hear about the plans for the November 12 end-of-the-year dinner at John’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill in Vista The August two day off-shore trip was an adventure.
The weather was up and the wind blew a gale for two days. We fished as far as 120 miles south from Point Loma to catch limits of Yellowtail for all of the 18 anglers and crew members on board. In addition, we caught five Blue-fin tuna, one Dorado and one Skipjack, on the first day. The jackpot was won by guest Henri Bisson with a nice 30 pound yellowtail. On the second day the only fish caught was a small Yellowtail caught and released on the troll by Cass Teele. We were all glad to get back to port in one piece after two tough days on the ocean with big seas and high winds, with a supply of fresh fish for the annual summer BBQ. If you have any questions concerning the fishing trips or about the Club, feel free to call President Paul Yoshida at 760-940-8871, or Charter Master Rollin Grider at 760-726-9594.

A great time was had by all at the annual summer BBQ and fish fry on August 24. Members of the Club put on a great party for 140 members, guests of members, and residents of the Ocean Hills community. All of the fish were caught by members of the Club, and everyone had a fun time eating, visiting and dancing the night away on a perfect summer evening to the music of the Bayou Broth-ers Band. A thank you to President Paul and co-chairs Ron and Beth Mercier and the committee for helping put on the best party of the year. Please join us at the October 8 meeting for fun and
fellowship about angling in our local waters, and the latest “Fish stories.” We still have some space left on our last day and a half trip for the year, on The Pacific Voyager, October 29 – 31. You may sign up at the Front Desk, place your check in the Club’s check envelope and select your bunk. We will discuss plans for fishing in 2014, take reservations for the end of the year party in November, elect officers for 2014 and have another drawing at our October meeting with a chance for you to win some great prizes, if your lucky ticket is drawn. Tickets are 6 for $5, or $1 each. Come join us and have a chance to win some good prizes at our monthly drawing.

Ballroom Dance clUBWe continue to have our social dances every
second Friday of the month. Participation fluctuates between 90 to 110 attendees, so we usually have plenty of room for more people to attend. Even if you are not a member of the Club, you are very welcome to come and dance with us. We always dance to a live band from 7 pm to 10 pm and the cost of attending is only $10 for non-members. Residents of OHCC who are not Club members, who want to attend any of our Friday social, should make a check for $10 (to OH Ballroom Club) and place it in the Ballroom Club envelope at the Front Desk not later than the Monday preceding the Friday Dance. For more info please call Ana Yoshida at 760-940-8871.
We continue to offer free dance lessons every Wednesday from 2:30 pm to 4 pm. These dances are taught by George and Miriam Mozes who have lots of patience and work with individual people as well as couples to make sure that everyone gets the patterns (steps) that they teach. Each month they teach a different dance. In September they taught the Tango and in October they teach the Swing. The Club extends a warm invitation to all OHCC residents to take advantage of these free

lessons. We especially invite the “newbies” the residents who moved-in in the last two years, to come and check us out. Please call George or Miriam Mozes at 760-941-5175.
We are also continuing with our Monday classes (every Monday from 4 pm to 5 pm). For the last few weeks we learned the Western Two Step (Cowboy Two Step). We keep learning new and fun dances. The Monday classes are taught by a professional teacher. The cost is $5 per class, per person for Club members and $7 for non-members. Again, anyone can attend. Call us to find out what dance we will learn next.
Please remember: No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
BilliarDs clUBSeptember was busy month. We began with
a lesson on “Break Shots” on the 2nd. “Give us a Break” the crowd chanted, and instructor Keith Thompson certainly did. Turns out there’s a lot more to it than “Hit it as hard as you can!”
That was followed by a Professional Pool Seminar on the 10th by the inimitable Calvin Coker. Calvin started
off with a private lesson (which all were invited to witness), then displayed high quality cues for members who wanted to upgrade from our house cues, and finally presented an hour and a half group seminar on “Everything A Beginner Needs to Know.” It was a full evening that was very enthusiastically received.
On the 12th we had a “Goodbye Party” for Marshall and Joyce Coil, who moved to another community on the 21st. Marshall was a founder of the Billiards Club, and served as Club President for an incredible 15 years! Surely an unequalled record. Marshall, now President Emeritus, finished off the evening by teaching us two of his favorite pool games: 7-Up and Kansas. THANK YOU Marshall and Joyce – you will be missed!
In October we will have two touring professionals (the Ulrich brothers, Louis and Josh) here to teach us Team 8-Ball Strategies. After a couple weeks in which to practice, we will put their lessons to use in our Coed Team 8-Ball Tournament. In addition, there will be another six lessons throughout this month.
Do come down, take a look at the new tables, and shoot a little pool. The Billiards Room is open to everyone, whenever the Clubhouse is open, and visitors are always welcome!

Catering by Pollo Loco. Menu to include: chicken, rice, coleslaw, black beans, fruit, chips, salsa, guacamole, and dessert. For beverages we will have wine, sparkling cider, and coffee. to Lake Hodges, West Side, in Rancho Bernardo at the Ed Brown Senior Center at West Bernardo Drive. Meet at the overflow lot to form carpools and receive directions.Be at the lot by 7:45 am for DEPARTURE AT 8 am.
Bring hat, water, walking stick if you use one, binoculars, and wear sturdy shoes (closed toe). Bring optional money for lunch and gas for the driver. The Lake Hodges trail will pass through open fields
then follow the lake itself. In the past we have seen
several duck species, egrets, herons, other water birds, along with several birds of prey including a Bald eagle. We will also be on the lookout for a variety of land birds along the trail.
On our bird walks we notice that some birds walk while others hop. Those that walk spend a lot of time foraging on the ground. Walking is more energy efficient since it doesn’t require birds to catapult their entire body mass forward with each step. Birds that spend time in trees hop from branch to branch; it is the most effective way for them to move around. The habit is carried over when they are on the ground.

Unfortunately, there is a dearth of quality Hollywood films up for release in DVD during this period. The numbers appearing after the above film titles
represent the combined average critical and popular rating on a scale of 0 to 100 as published by Rotten Tomatoes.com and IMDB.com. A rating between 60 and 100 signifies the highest rated films. GarDen clUBAttention Orchid lovers! Be sure to attend
the Garden Club meeting on Wednesday, October 9. Sarah Moreno’s presentation about growing and caring for orchids will be very informative and helpful. The guest speaker begins at 10 am, and the general meeting will follow. Please join us for coffee and treats served at 9:30 am.
The orchid may be considered one of the worlds’ most beautiful flowers, and growing them has become a hobby for many Ocean Hills residents. “Orchids 101 for Awesome Results” will be presented by Sarah Moreno, a staff member at Cal Pacific Orchid Farms. Cal Pacific is a family-owned greenhouse that caters to orchid enthusiasts as well as to novices. The showroom in Encinitas displays hundreds of blooming orchids from all over the world. Cal Pacific creates unique arrangements, carries orchid supplies, and offers a room and board service. Customers
are welcome to bring in their non-blooming orchid collection to be repotted and grown. Moreno has lived in southern California since she was nine years old. While raising her family she opened a small succulent nursery in Vista. She has been working at Cal Pacific for the past eight years in the Sales and Design department.
Historically the meaning of orchids has included wealth, love, beauty, and refinement. To the ancient Greeks orchids suggested virility. Orchids changed to being a symbol of luxury when orchid collecting became very popular in Victorian England. During Victorian times one needed to be wealthy enough to import orchids and wealthy enough to build greenhouses to grow them. Today, orchids are regarded as symbols of rare and delicate beauty. Giving an orchid as a gift is a sure sign of love and affection.

melvina’s tips:For most of the country, fall is here and winter is
approaching. San Diego gardens are still in full swing. Keep pruning your plants for shaping purposes. Prune out deadwood from camellias and azaleas. Also, thin buds for bigger flowers. If you wish to make starts for your plants, early October is a good time to do it. Cut a six inch stem. Remove the leaves from the bottom node and dip in a product such as Root-tone. Place in a peat pot. When the roots grow through the pot, transfer into a larger pot or directly into your garden. Continue to set out cool season annuals and bulbs.
Water cactus and succulents minimally. Fertilize everything with a half strength (10-10-10) balanced fertilizer. Continue your snail patrols and bait if you desire. It is time to divide day lilies, agapanthus, Shasta daisies, belladonna, clivia, moraea, irises and gazaneas. Cut back on watering. Set your irrigation system to water
only in the early morning so moisture will not remain on the leaves overnight. Continue to plant bedding plants from six packs including violas and pansies. I prefer violas as they having a longer blooming period and do not hang their heads when ready to “give up the ghost.” My violas lasted from November through August this year. If you can find Johnny-jump-ups, do try them. They are a smaller variety of violas and more hardy. They also re-seed freely. I haven’t been able to find them in a couple of years. Fall is San Diego’s best planting period. Why? Because the air cools down, but the earth stays warm-a combination that works wonders for newly planted plants. The cooler air makes for less heat stress on leaves while the warm earth encourages new root growth

Kennel KlUBThe new artificial turf has been installed in
the Dog Park. Penny Ostergaard, Secretary of the Kennel Klub, recently visited the 4 o’clock group to interview owners and dogs on what their opinion was of the new turf. Margo Lipps and Gracie (poodle, lab and spaniel mix) liked the clean look and feel of the turf. Barbara Davis said that Mattie (schnauzer/poodle mix) thought the turf was great for playing and chasing around with other dogs. Ron Carso brought Comet (Bichon Poodle Mix) to the Park and Comet feels right at home and doesn’t get dirty anymore. Comet has a nice smile! Paul Steinberg and Tiger (Bichon/Poodle Mix) are both retired and like the way the new turf looks. They come to the Park every day and just hang out. Last, but not least, Holly Radziwon showed up with three dogs, Daniel (Spaniel visiting OHCC), Mickey (Poodle and Lhasa mix) and Gigi (Chihuahua mix). All 3 dogs greeted everyone and appeared to think that the Dog Park was just great!
ANNUAL 2013 MEETING will be held November 9, at 10 am in the Mykonos Room. We will be voting on a new name for the Kennel Klub (Board felt that we should consider a name change so that the Club would be all pet inclusive). Please submit your choice of name change to Ellen at [email protected] or call her at 760-305-7114. We will also be voting for 2 new Officers (Vice President and Secretary). Ellen Kippel will stay on as President and John Stark will stay on as Treasurer.
CAT CONNECTION GET TOGETHER will be held Thursday, October 10, at 2 pm on the Lanai. Colleen McCall will be coordinating this event. This is for cat owners and friends of cats.
DOG WALKERS now that the days are getting shorter and darker earlier, dog owners might consider using a reflective collar or leash when walking in the evening. As a precaution, keep your dog close to the curb when walking. It is best to stay clear of cars on Leisure Village Way.
liBrarYIt’s bargain time! If you’re not a member of
the Library, October is the time to join. For $15 per household you not only get all the benefits of being a member throughout 2014 but you’ll begin as soon as you turn your check into the Front Desk. That’s a full three months extra, or 15 months total. What are the benefits? You can sign up for any new
book, and you will be called as soon as your name comes up on the list. You can check out any book on the Reserve Shelf located directly behind the librarian, and you may request that we purchase a book we do not have. And, of course, you can continue to take any book or paperback from the open shelves.
We hate to keep preaching, but please return any book you have finished reading so that others may also enjoy it. Remember, if it’s a hardbound put a rubber band around it and drop it in the slot. We’re still missing many biographies that others are asking for, so if you have one or more that you’ve finished reading, please return them. The same goes for paperbacks.
Last, but certainly not least, we welcome a new librarian, Dorothy Ryburn.

PhotoGraPhY clUBFor the month of October, the Photography
Club will make a field trip to the San Diego Botanic Garden (formerly Quail Botanical Gardens) in Encinitas for a photo shoot. This will occur on Friday, October 11. Our tentative plan is to meet in the overflow parking lot at 9 am for carpooling arrangements, spend several hours in the garden, then, for those interested, have lunch in a local restaurant. Photos will then be reviewed in the regular Photography Club meeting next month in November. There will not be a regular meeting in October, with the possibility of rescheduling it if there is very little interest in the photo shoot. Bud DeMaris is planning to prepare Blu-ray and DVD versions of slide shows of images taken during this shoot. By the time this article reaches you, the Club will have provided you more details and queried as to whether you are interested in participating in this outing. If there is insufficient interest in the shoot, we will cancel the shoot and hold a

Guidance on using the scanner or photo printer is also available. Donated photo paper is available at no cost, or Epson photo paper of several styles can be purchased at cost from Bud. If possible, please let Bud know ahead of time what area you want to address or what photo paper you desire.
racQUet clUBThe Racquet Club held its annual Lanai
party, “Friendship Through Sports,” on August 7, and what a party it was! Wine was served along with appetizers catered by Bobby’s Hideaway Café, to the 120 guests who came to enjoy the evening. Salad and a pasta bar dinner followed, topped later by ice cream novelty desserts. The band Sundance was outstanding, and many danced to the selection of songs suggested by Paul Yoshida and Chuck Miller–fast, slow, and some line dancing. Our large dance floor space lends itself to everyone having room to “do their thing.” The table centerpieces were the complete innovation of Patti Smith, who many of our members (and OHCC residents) see taking photos everywhere! Combine her photography skills and great sense of humor, and the result was centerpiece photos with captions to laugh about–further exemplifying the fun and friendships found through playing our sports. It’s these relationships that keep us all going in our senior years! Other party committee members to thank for helping to make this a great event were Ana Yoshida, Sunny and Dirk Frowein, Brenda Stafford, Karen Kinney, Val Davis, Connie Perkins, Alan Singer, Jo Wichary, Patricia Burke, Joan McAllister, Gerry Livsey, and Dannica Wood. The highlight of the evening was the speech and words of thanks by our four-time president Herb Livsey. Herb presented his beautiful “OHCC Racquet Club” sweatshirts to several members, as he has done at the previous two parties. These sweatshirts are donated to our club by Nike, and Herb personally had them embroidered with our club name. This year the recipients were Valerie Davis, Ellen Baur, Harrison Frank, Brenda Stafford, Jack Morgan, Judy Gagnon, Patti Smith, Joan McAllister, Gerry Livsey, Al Harruff, Debi Vail, and Sunny Frowein. Herb commented on each recipient’s individual contribution to the Racquet Club, making the presentation both entertaining and humorous. The presentation ended with an emphatic note of thanks to Herb, on behalf of all members, for taking on the job of Club president for the past 4 years. While still working and traveling in his basketball scouting career, his leadership and undying energy to tackle all Racquet Club issues is
so very much appreciated by our membership! Thank you so much Herb!
Herb Livsey will head up another pickleball tournament scheduled for Thursday, October 10. These pickleball events fill up quickly, as
we have no shortage of players who love to compete and have fun!
Plans are being made for this year’s Ladies’ Day Tennis Tournament to be held on Saturday, October 26. The three co-chairs of this event are Sally Palmer and Lyn Asaro at760-940-1312 and Jo Wichary at 760-941-7882. The
tournament will include lots of tennis for all levels, all mixed up, with an additional element of surprise thrown in–not limited to lots of food, fun, and merriment! Sign up at Tennis Court 2 showcase or call the girls with any questions. Don’t forget–you can find all Racquet Club information
and photos at our website: http://www.ohccracquetclub.com/.
sailinG clUBThe Sailing Club moved to Abravanel Hall
for its September meeting to accommodate the large turnouts we have been receiving. After enjoying delicious snacks provided by Nancy Gayvert and Sandy Jones and beverages by sommelier Jack Morgan, Commodore Kopolow conducted the business meeting. Club membership is now at 197, with a few members being added every month. The increased membership is reflected both in the attendance at monthly meetings and in the number of members sailing each month. Three boats were scheduled to go on days sails in September, with the possibility of a fourth, if there was enough interest. Vice-Commodore Alan Poulutzian discussed several
upcoming events. The Sailing Club is the host this year for the annual Sailing Club/Racquet Club Holiday Party. The date will be Saturday, December 14 in Abravanel Hall. As usual, it will be an opportunity to dress up (black tie optional), and cost is expected to be about $45 per person. Look for a flier soon with details about the menu, caterer, band, and when ticket sales will begin. Buy your tickets early, because this event always sells out.
He also noted that 2014 will be the 30th anniversary of Ocean Hills Country Club, and that the Sailing Club would be responsible for organizing a Community event for September 30, 2014. He said it had been decided to organize a hot-dog luncheon, and he would be providing more details closer to the event. Alan also discussed the possibility of a Catalina trip in 2014, and asked for a show of interest. As it was considerable, he said such a trip would be pursued next fall.October is the month when the Club elects its officers
for the coming year, and Nominating Committee Chair Ron Danielson announced the slate of candidates: for Commodore, current Vice Commodore Alan Poulutzian;

for Vice Commodore, current Commodore Bob Kopolow; current Secretary Bill Smith and Treasurer Evy Sanfilippo will stand for re-election; and for Fleet Captain, Forrest Newburg. When elections are held at the October meeting, nominations from the floor will also be accepted.
Following the business meeting, Commodore Kopolow gave a demonstration of the Club’s new website and showed how to access it from the Ocean Hills Country Club website. The Sailing Club website contains a link that informs users about future sails and allows you to sign up or add your name to the waiting list.
While the pace of activities will slow down in the fall, there will still be opportunities for day sails. The best way to sign up is to attend the monthly meetings and sign up at the meeting. If you miss the meeting, check either the website or the Sailing Club folder at the Front Desk to see which captain is taking out a boat, and on which date. If the boat is not full, add your name to the list and put a check for $45 in the Club’s check envelope to be added to the sail. Priority goes to those who place their checks in the Sailing Club envelope earliest. Finally, Betty Klaas, our club historian, would appreciate receiving copies of photos you may have taken at the many Club events this summer for our club scrapbook.
Join us at our next meeting on October 1 to enjoy delicious snacks and drinks, vote for officers, and to sign up for upcoming sails. Refreshments are served at 7 pm and the business meeting begins at 7:30 pm.

was catered by Souplantation and the program was a different type of Show and Tell. Handmade items were displayed but the general theme was to bring your oldest item. The variety was interesting and there were quite a number of crafted items more than 50 years old - many are still being worn and used today. Good things never go out of style!
The September sewing project was a Reverse Applique Sweatshirt. LaVergne brought two samples to the 1st Thursday September meeting and we should have quite a few more on display at the 1st Thursday in October. Through some kind of magic - a simple sweatshirt turns into a very attractive jacket. As I write this I am still gathering my materials for the project and if my jacket looks anything like the two LaVergne brought I will be absolutely delighted (and not a little surprised). Come on October 3 and take a look.
There are two NEW Events on our Sewing, Etc. schedule - one is Sewing and the other Etc.
ETC: Barbara Roe is hosting Card Making get-togethers on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month. They are from 12 pm to 1:30 pm and the room location has been moving around so look for them in the Ladies Clubroom or the Art Room. Barbara has a lot of supplies but if you have specific stamps or embossing powder, maybe a heat gun, bring them along. There are a few pictures of completed cards on the website.
SEWING: A three month (September, October, November) “Sew-In” trial, 9 am to 5 pm. This is a get-together for serious sewers to work on their own projects in a spacious and congenial atmosphere. It is a non-hosted event. Bring your own equipment; many will be bringing their own machines. You are free to use Club equipment, i.e. a sewing machine, but need to get it out and put it away yourself. You might want to bring a packed lunch if you plan on being there all day.
As always more information and lots of pictures are online at ohccsewingclub.com courtesy of Shannon.

VillaGe DancersAs of this writing, our “Oklahoma” show
has not happened. However, we have sold many tickets so we know it will be a huge success. The added benefit, of course, is the money we will be able to donate to OHSPA. We will let you know next month how much that amount is.
We are practicing diligently for the show. I thought you’d like to see the how we learn the dances. So many people ask, “How do you learn so many different dances?” Well, it’s just like learning a speaking part in a play. First, you have a script and then you have lots of practice. Here’s our procedure: 1) Our teacher, Ellie, demonstrates a sequence of steps for a new dance; 2) We repeat those steps with her many times; 3) She adds more steps; 4)
We repeat those steps; 5) She puts the first sequence together with the second sequence; 6) We attempt to do the same; 7) Then we try to dance the steps to the music. Usually, someone in the class has a video camera, so she videos Ellie doing the steps so when we practice without her, we can see the steps and can easily follow along. In addition, Ellie writes out a script for us to follow, so we can practice at home. Here is part of the script for one of our dances in “Oklahoma’s” Many a New Day:

VillaGe VetsThe next Village Vets meeting will be held
on October 24 at 3 pm in the Mykonos Room. One of our very own residents will be giving us a history of the B-52 Bomber, its capabilities and his personal experiences in Southeast Asia. He will also address its current status. You will see a short film showing the capabilities of the B-52D. The B-52 has been the preeminent American heavy bomber of the last 54 years. No one ever expected to see it flying over Afghanistan but it did! LtCol Greg Coffey, USAF (Ret) will address his experiences throughout Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War as he flew the B-52 on numerous combat sorties. “Operation Arc Light” was the code name given to the use of B-52 strategic bombers in Southeast Asia. You will learn all about the B-52 Stratofortress! This speaker spent many years in the Air Force as a B-52 Pilot, Commanding Officer, Instructor, as well as being stationed at Headquarters of the Strategic Air Command. (The list goes on but I will save that for the meeting!) He will address your questions and you will come away knowing more about the B-52 Bomber than you ever thought you would know. This is our history! Do not miss this exciting meeting!

Please direct any questions you might have about Line Dancing to our president, Grace Spencer at 760-295-2853.
VillaGe sQUaresWe have a great month ahead--October
23 is graduation day for our students. There will be a candlelight ceremony, with a diploma, for our graduates. Afterwards there will be a Club dance that will include the students. Our new graduates are now invited to dance at our weekly Club dances. Then on October 30, we will be having our annual Halloween Dance with Ken Bower. This dance is open to other Square Dance Clubs in the San Diego area. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Of course there are all the other normal Club dances on Wednesdays during the month.
Now we need to shine a light on something important for all of us to know. We recently had a member suffer a stroke while he was dancing at one of our classes. So, this is a good time to review information that will help us all recognize and identify this problem if it is occurring.
Neurologists say that if they can GET TO a stroke

our hikes, this one will have both a moderate route and an easy one. The moderate route will start on the top and work its way down to Discovery Lake. The easy route will stay on the top of the hill. Lunch after the hike will be at one of the San Marcos Restaurant Row establishments.
The second hike will be at the Santa Margarita Preserve in Fallbrook. We go on this one on October 18. This one will also have an easy route as well as a moderate one. The Preserve consists of riparian and upland habitats. The lush river corridor provides wildlife a place to naturally
forage and make their homes. Raptors are a common site over head or perched in trees. Deer and other large mammals rely on the river for their water. Hopefully we will be able to see some wildlife on the trails. Lunch after the hike will be in Fallbrook.
For personal comfort, don’t forget to bring water, good sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and a hat on any of our hikes.
All of our hikes start at the Overflow Parking Lot where we meet at 8:30 am and carpool to the trailhead. Remember to help out the driver with some gas money if

wooDchUcKsThe older you get, the faster time travels.
The proof is that it is already October with about two and a half months to go for each of you to finish your projects.
The table saw is the most used piece of equipment by members and the Maintenance Department. This machine requires your full attention when used. Here is a piece of advice that we want you to remember-- “NEVER CUT A PIECE OF WOOD WITH ANY CURVES AT THE ENDS ON THE BOTTOM.” Your wood will come back at you faster than you can get out of the way. Please do not forget.
The flea market was a great success. The Woodchucks with the help of the Recreation Department really put forth a great effort. Everybody that donated their time will be acknowledged in the next Newsletter.
Since weather has really been hot, we urge members
that use the shop to bring water when working. You can get engrossed in what you are doing and forget to keep yourself hydrated. If you do not drink fluids while working, it can lead to problems.
Our president wishes to welcome all the new members. Please take some time and look around till you feel comfortable with the surroundings. If you have any questions, please feel free to call for help.

They not only offer a deep knowledge of real estate and the local and economic issues shaping market trends, but they’re also educated on issues of particular concern to aged 50+ clients.

Our clients know that we are truly committed to the successful outcome of their real estate transaction. Our commitment and focus is always in their best interest; it is genuine and we are always prepared to go the extra mile.
“It was a pleasure working with Ronda. She was always so patient and easy to talk with. We consider her our friend now and will use her in the future for our next real estate transaction.”
Help me Ronda...Won’t you let Ronda help you! There are excellent opportunities for retired
and pre-retired homeowners to help stabilize their living expenses and lifestyles while protecting their home equity and wealth by selecting the right mortgage program. There are better alternatives available for retirees that are investigating a reverse mortgage that will not consume their equity and give them flexibility and options in the event that they need to draw on their equity in the future. Call me for information on options, including alternatives to reverse mortgages.
