Oh, the Places We’ll Go! Celebrating 26 Years of Fabulous Choice Affairs Events

When we sat down to brainstorm this year’s theme, we knew we wanted to convey what Choice Affairs really means to all of us – unique experiences, fun and friendship. Thinking back on events we’ve attended over the years, we all recall one common theme – the joy of travelling the globe through exotic foods, interesting lectures and one-of-a kind experiences, while never having to set foot in an airplane. Hence, “Oh, the Places We’ll Go” was born. We invite you to join us on our journey this year through the many places we’ll visit…This year’s offerings promise to have plenty of new events to select from. These include a special operatic performance by the accomplished Rebecca Comerford while dining on James Sly’s finest culinary interpretations, a tour of an operational farm specializing in permaculture that includes a lovely tea under the trees, as well as the chance to discover your inner artist by creating a mosaic piece or developing a dream box with the guidance of local artists. Also it is with great sadness and appreciation to the San Luis Obispo Coast District/Hearst Castle®, California State Parks that we will offer our final behind-the-scenes tour of Hearst Castle. This signature fund-raiser for Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties provides support for the programs and services that Planned Parenthood offers to women, men and families in our communities. Our team has had the rewarding opportunity of collaborating with our many friends, volunteers and supporters who are helping to bring you these terrific Choice Affairs. We give our heartfelt thanks to each and every MoCA (Mothers of Choice Affairs) whose participation in planning, hosting or underwriting these events has provided another season of unique experiences.Special appreciation goes to Carol Hillygus-Irving and Blake Irving and the Cheeryble Foundation, who generously underwrote the production cost of this booklet. In addition to the many hosts and event underwriters, we thank our generous supporters: Luella and Pat Connelly, the Connelly Family Foundation. Many thanks, too, to our editor, Nancy Davidson, and our writers, Arianna Jansma and Betsy Manger, and especially to our booklet designer, Chris Flannery, who has created yet another beautiful booklet to add to our archives. With so many great Affairs that will allow you to sample the bounty and luxury that exists right here in the tri-counties, we hope you won’t delay in purchasing your tickets…many do sell out quickly. Because of you, we are now celebrating another year of fun and camaraderie in support of Planned Parenthood – we thank you for your continued generosity.

Let’s Go to Interesting Places and Have Fun!

2Saturday, April 11, 2015 * 10:00 am – 2:00 pmLimited to 15 Beach Bums$75.00 per person ($60.00 tax-deductible)

Off To The Beach . . .Discover The Mysteries of Arroyo Burro

Can rocks burn? Were there volcanoes in Santa Barbara?Stroll along Arroyo Burro Beach and Lagoon with Dr. Ed Keller, Professor of Environmental Studies, Earth Science and Geography at UC Santa Barbara, and discover the answers. This amazing 90-minute walk begins at Arroyo Burro Beach in front of the Boathouse Restaurant. Large boulders have been deliberately brought to this part of the beach to protect it from erosion. Wild ducks and herons may accompany you as you walk along the shoreline, listening to Professor Keller’s explanations of the geological events that created the rock formations you see. He will shed light on how fires, resulting from the spontaneous combustion of tar when it oxidizes, have perplexed and fascinated people for generations. In the 1700s, the Spanish made note of Santa Barbara’s “volcanoes,” believing that the smoke and gases they saw came from a volcanic source. A century later, passing ships utilized the fire and smoke from the burning shale as a natural light source to find safe harbor at Santa Barbara. In 2006, a landslide caused the shale in the sea cliff to spontaneously combust, resulting in a fire.Once you’ve become an expert on the geology of this coastline, you’re invited to join MoCAs Carol Fell, Mollyanne George, Noëlle Harrott and Charlotte Williams at the Cappello Picnic site at Elings Park for a delectable lunch. Special thanks go to Professor Ed Keller for his expertise, and to our MoCAs for underwriting and hosting this extraordinary beach walk.

There will be plenty of time to ask questions and exchange ideas with other cocktail enthusiasts. Start planning your own creative cocktail party as you make your way home with cocktail recipes, provided by your hosts, and your creatively crafted bitters.Skol! to MoCA Valerie Williams and to Arianne Swaffer for their enthusiastic and generous support and to Pam Talbot for hosting this cheer-full event.

16Thursday, May 7, 2015 * 5:00 – 8:00 pmLimited to 50 Architectural Historians$125.00 per person ($100.00 tax-deductible)

Join us at the lovely George Washington Smith/Lutah-designed Montecito home of Gretchen Lieff for a private viewing of the documentary film “Lutah, A Passion for Architecture: A Life in Design.” Lutah Maria Riggs Society archivist and historian Melinda Gándara will be on hand to present this intriguing portrait of Lutah Maria Riggs, one of America’s first licensed female architects and an early associate of locally renowned George Washington Smith. Because Smith was not a licensed architect, Lutah’s education and credentials were instrumental in the success of their dynamic collaboration that began in 1921. Their partnership lasted for ten years before Smith died suddenly in his early fifties. For the remainder of her career Lutah practiced architecture in Santa Barbara and exerted an incredible influence on the design of the city. She served on planning commissions, led preservation societies, and designed hundreds of homes and commercial buildings. Her detailed journals provide incredible insight into the history of 20th-century architecture and the work of an indefatigable woman practicing as a design professional in a male-dominated field. This intriguing film, which was shown at the 2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, shows many of Lutah’s seminal homes. Melinda will take you behind the scenes and discuss the making of this film, a love letter to both Lutah and Santa Barbara. You’ll have the pleasure of sipping Lieff Wines provided by our gracious hostess and enjoy delightful hors d’oeuvres crafted by Elena Wegner. Many thanks to MoCA Betsy Manger and her husband Bob for underwriting this Affair.
