letter states: He was killed in action about eight o'clock this morning, in a charge made upon the enemy's works.  He was struck by a grape shot in the right hip, the ball passing through the lower extremities of his bowels.  He lived about an hour and a half after he was brought off the field, and was perfectly conscious to the last moment.  He knew that he must die, and desired that his dying love might be sent to his friends at Whitehall and West Troy.  Before he died, he said that he did not want his body sent home, but buried on the field.  Otherwise the officers of the regiment would have had his body embalmed and forwarded to his friends.  The Chaplain and myself buried him with great care near our camp.  His grave will be properly taken care of and marked, so as to be easily identified.  I will take care of his effects and keep them subject to the disposition of his friends.  All the means in our power were used to inform his brother of his death, but he could not be found.  The Captain was beloved and respected by all, both officers and men.  We shall mourn his loss and extend our sympathies to his bereaved friends. Capt. Vaughn lived in West Troy, where he was well-known and had numerous friends, as he had in this city.  He was a brave, gallant and efficient officer, and his death will bring sincere grief to all who ever knew him.The Troy Daily Times, August 10, 1864: "FROM THE ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-NINTH. – Mr. Wm. H. Merriam, writing from the headquarters of the Tenth Army Corps, on the 6th to the Herald says: The death of Capt. Augustus D. Vaughn, of the One Hundred and Sixty-ninth

Volunteers, is announced among the casualties of the 30th July in front of Petersburg. Capt. Vaughn was a resident of Whitehall, New York, at the outbreak of the war, whence he brought a company to Troy in that State, to aid in the perfecting of the One Hundred and Sixty-ninth New York Volunteers. The chief characteristics of the late Capt. Vaughn were coolness, decision, activity and personal bravery. He met death with that fortitude which he had ever displayed in life, receiving a wound from which he survived only a few hours."The Troy Daily Times, July 24, 1865: "THE MINE. The regiment next took part in the celebrated mine explosion of July 30. Here Capt. A. D. Vaughn, of Co. F, a gallant and glorious fellow, was killed. Brave as a lion, courteous and kind to all, 'None named him but to praise.' His dying request was to be buried on the field of battle, and he sleeps in an unknown, but not unwept or dishonored grave."The Troy Daily Times, July 26, 1865: "Neither must we omit a melancholy remembrance of those other gallant, tried and faithful officers, who have fallen on the field ere reaching the goal of Peace. To memory dear will ever be the names of the manly and ardent Hughes; the impetuous, stern and noble Vaughn; the lovely, gallant and patriotic young Walter Birdsall, of this city, who died with his sword outdrawn upon the enemy; the chivalric and patient Ferguson; the courteous and brave Palmer; the earnest, handsome and thorough-going young soldier, Norman J. Whitehall lost heavily during the late rebellion, although none of the bodies of her dead heroes were brought North, with the exception of Capt. A. D. Mount Ida Cemetery, Troy, Rensselaer County, N.Y.

Mount Ida Cemetery, estab-lished in 1832 on Pawling Avenue, is often referred to as Old Mount Ida Cemetery by locals, and a historical marker at its gate refers to it as such, but its official name has always been just Mount Ida Cemetery, something the DAR got right with their book "Inscriptions of graves from Mt. Ida cemetery." In records prior to 1854, one may occasionally find it referred to as New Mount Ida Cemetery.
